breastfeeding older children

On the weekend I was looking at a friend's photos of a recent party. I was surprised to see in one of the photos there was a woman breastfeeding her son. Not that I have an issue with the whole breastfeeding in public thing. But I was surprised when the child being openly breastfed at this party was four years old.
There have been several stories in the media in past months about women who have chosen to continue breastfeeding their children after they start school. These stories included quotes from the children explaining how much they enjoyed breastfeeding and how special it makes them feel.
Do you think that there is a right time to stop breastfeeding a child? Should the child's age be a factor at all?
What benefits, if any, do you think there are in breastfeeding a child for longer than say, six or twelve months? What negatives are there?
If you breastfed your child, at what age did you stop and why did you choose that time to stop? If you are currently breastfeeding your child, do you know at what age you intend to stop?
Whatever your opinions or your choices on this subject, they will be treated with respect here.
