I'd recommend Tracy Chevalier. She is a very good author that writes historical novels with a little bit of everything ...a dash of romance, a dash of mystery...a lot of historical detail which makes up the major theme of her stories. Also...Philippa Gregory is pretty good...I found out about her last year with her book, "The other Boleyn Girl". It was a very "solid" read.
