As the name suggests, it's a media player. It is quite good one, you must try it. Or is it only a shortcut?

Sorry for such a short reply, here is some more as an afterthought:
1. It supports increasing volume up to 400% (but quality decreases...)
2. plays .flv files, and some others not supported by WMP.

I have that program, it's a good Video Player most specially if you have a DVD rom. i really didn't know how to explain it but it's just another video player like windows media player but they're different.

VLC media player is a free software media player by the VideoLAN project.
It is a highly portable multimedia player, supporting many audio and video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
It plays the audio and video files which cannot be played by winamp or windows media player.
VLC mostly supports all kinds of audio and video files.
Its a Great software to watch videos with .flv format, which cannot be viewd in windows media player.

Hello yugasini.
VLC media player is one of the best media players of around 10-15 media players that I had encountered. It has got many attractive features for the ease of user.
It has many shortcuts available for various functionalities and uses around 20 alphabets on keyboard as its shortcuts. Further it can easily modify subtitles which many others can't do and more over it can play many many formats and this is the most attractive feature of it.
Uptil its previous version it had one disadvantage that it can't play rmvb file but now in its latest version VLC 1.0.1 it has rmvb support also.
I can say that it is very good media player and you should definitely use it.

hello again yugasini.
The best way to play files with vlc is open media dialog box on top left of vlc window and open files with it and play them. Another way is to just open the vlc and open the folder where your songs are stored. Now just drag a song or video onto vlc window and they will be played. EASY.....

in my view vlc media player is the best media player. i have used my media players like windows media player, power dvd, divx player, gom player, ghost player, nero media player, media player classic, ashampoo media player, real player, quick time player etc but i fell vlc media player is the best player to view all sorts of files of different formats i feel it is the player which supports majority of the formats of video and audio files my rating for vlc media player would be more than 9
