Does anyone make ice cream at home anymore?

When I was growing up one of our favorite summer activities was to make home made ice cream! We would use a wooden bucket, put in rock salt and then the pail. We poured the cream into the pail and added the sugar, eggs and other ingrediants. All of the kids would take turns cranking the handle until dad decided it was thick enough and we could eat it! I've tried Baskin and Robbins 31 flavors, Cold Stone Creamery and lots of store bought Ice Cream and it doesn't have the same flavor or texture as that good ole home made ice cream. I still put pieces of fruit into my ice cream and then stir it in the bowl trying to recapture the flavor and texture of the family treat.

You know, a lot of people have no idea what you're talking about! lol. There are so many ice cream makers now that you just put the stuff in the machine, turn it on, and go about your business until the timer goes off! lol. For me too, making ice cream was a great family tradition. The wooden bucket like you said, the big "beaters", lots of ice, rock salt, whatever flavoring you wanted. Then the fun part....turning that crank until daddy said it was ready! I swear it seemed like hours between my brother, sister and I taking turns churning. You're absolutely right too about store bought. Not even close. Too many additives, preservatives and god knows what else. Back then you knew exactly what was in it because you put it there yourself! Thanks for bringing back some great memories!

I've never made homemade ice cream before, but I would be interested in trying it sometime (maybe when the kids are a bit older!). I guess now they have machines that will do all the work for you once you add all the ingredients, so it's still possible to make homemade ice cream! It's just so much easier to go buy store bought ice cream - pick a flavor and there it is. But I'm sure it doesn't compare to ice cream from scratch!! On that note, my child's school teacher gave us a recipe on how to make ice cream at home. I don't have the exact recipe handy, but you put sugar, milk, and flavoring (and not sure if there was any other ingredient), put it in a small ziploc bag, then put that in a larger ziploc bag with salt and ice. Then the kids are supposed to wear gloves and shake the bag for a few minutes. Supposedly this turns into a one serving ice cream treat! Perhaps a better explanation of the recipe can be found online somewhere. Now I'm curious to taste some homemade ice cream!!

My mouth is watering!! I don't make it anymore. My husband is diabetic and milk makes me swell. Sigh.... so much for the good old days. You are right. Nobody makes it like the homemade stuff. I used to make fresh peach, strawberry, banana, to name a few.

I have two ice cream freezers. One full sized and another that is for smaller amounts of ice cream. I usually make a batch or two each summer, but this year after the total knee replacement I haven't been in shape to even think about cooking let alone make ice cream. I may make some during the winter as my BF and I love to have a bowl of ice cream together while we're watching television at night.
