I know this may sound really crazy to some of you but then maybe not. Here I am again using my husbands pickiness on his clothes to start a discussion.
He believes that socks are made to go on a certain foot. He says that there is a sock for the right foot and one for the left foot. They are made to match up that way just like shoes are. I have laughed at him for hours over this. Here it is to tell me what you think. Does Socks have a left and right in a pair just like shoes fit?

Im a little confused. What does the right or left hand have to with it? It thinks that the socks have a left sock and then a right sock just like the way you put your shoes on. I appeciate your comment. Have a good day.

I have some cotton blend socks which after the first wear take on the shape of my foot and so I continue to wear them that way but no, socks are not made specifically for the right or left foot.....gloves, yes....socks ... no.
Unless of course they are patterned socks or have a motif then this is worn on the outside of the ankle/leg.

[b]This reminds me of a scene in some old movie I saw ages ago. And no, I don't recall the title, or anything else about it, really.
A man was explaining to his wife how you had to be careful when you made a sandwich to "be sure & get the slices in the correct order." Naturally she couldn't understand that (), so he demonstrated by taking some slices out of the sack--just past the heel, which he left in the bag.
He picked up the 1rst 2 & showed them to her, saying they were "a pair." "See?" he said. "There's an inside & an outside to each slice. You don't wanna put the mustard on the outside, do you?" He pulled the "pair" apart to expose their "inside sides."
His "inside" was simply the space made when he parted the 2 slices. And the "outside" was the far sides which faced away from the "insides." "Some people don't know that," he said, "& they reach into the bag & take out any old 2 slices from anywhere--even the middle!--not realizing they have sides that they improperly butter!" He practically shivered with the horror of it all.
I don't recall for sure, but I think the wife just shook her head in bewildered dismay at this weirdness, then walked away.
Sooo....
Tell your beloved to ask a sock company. They'll set him straight.
My stars, the things some folks can conjure up in their fertile minds!

[b]Well, it was a funny scene, which is why it stuck with me for so many decades. It was an old B&W comedy film. I wonder if I could find it in the movie guide that cross-references things such as comic scenes, & rates films from one to four bones. Can't recall the series title...something to do with "movie hound's reviews," I think (thus the bones rating system). It's really an excellent reference series, though I haven't had the bucks to buy one for many years....
Anyway, while it was funny in the film, I imagine in real life it could be trying, especially for a person with my temperament. Sounds like he picked a good mate to tolerate his quirkiness.

Ordinary socks don't have a right and a left. Whichever way is okay. But my socks have a left and a right. These are the ones with toes so it should not be interchanged or else the big toe will not fit on the little one.

That is what he says. He says that when you go to put on your socks that you can tell which sock goes on what foot by the way the big toe is. If you put the sock on the wrong foot it feels strange. That is his words.

Hi,
During Bernard Shaw's time there was no right and left of sock and your feet had to make the best of them. But he insisted that it could be made right and left and accordingly had them ordered as he wished.
But now we have socks both right and left.

Hubby says that when you go to put on those socks that you can tell which one goes on what foot by the way the point is for the big toe. I have looked and I just don't see it. I think you for your thoughts. You have a nice day.

Most socks will go one either foot, and there is no difference. Unless they are specially made socks. I have some socks made for running that have support features in them, so they have a left and a right one. Your normal, everyday socks, are equal for both feet.

Thank you that is what I have been saying to him all along. But bless his heart he will argue with me that there is a difference. I just let him believe his way and go on. You have a nice day and better tomorrow.

I think there's a socks which designed for covering our toes. Such kind of socks have its left and right. So i don't think if this statement is a crazy. But if you are talking about a commong socks, it's true that such common socks have no left and right. Good luck and have a nice day. Happy mylotting.

I want to say first thank you for your thoughts. I will try to explain breifly how he feels about this. He says that the big toe will have its spot on each sock which in return will let you know which one goes where. I guess...

No, of course they do not!
Socks can be put on whatever foot you like! I know that they stretch to fit your foot while wearing them and if you take them off and then put them back on the other foot, then they feel wrong!
But clean socks will go either way!

That is right. I feel the same way as you do about no difference. I really don't understand what it is that my hubby can see that I don't see. Anyways, thanks for your comment. Have a nice day and better tomorrow...

I'm puzzled about how he tell his right one from the left one.In my eyes,it seems the same. But I have a little tip to tell you.\(^o^)/~ If your big toe in the right impale your right sock, you can wear it on the other foot. This way,you won't persecuted by the fierce feeling, coz other toes won't come out.O(n_n)O~...But I think you'll choose to buy a new pair.Socks are different from shoes. They are soft which can fit your feet according to the shape of your feet. While shoes are not.Shoes are ironbound so much so that they have featured owners, one for right foot, another for left.

I don't have a clue how he can tell there is a difference. He just says that there is. Somehthing about the big toe matches what sock goes where. That it is always pointed. I guess...I just let him do his thing. Thanks for your comment..

In general, socks do not have a left and a right. However, there are some exceptions to this rule, the majority of those fall into children's socks. The ones that have the characters on one side of them are definitely made for either the right foot or the left foot so that the character on the sock shows on the outside of the ankle.
If your husband was my husband I believe that I too would have spent many hours laughing at him over this too. As for my husband, he doesn't even care if his socks match just as long as he has one for each of his feet.

I agree about the character socks or the decorated socks. I also think that after my husband has worn his socks and made holes in the big toe area he then has left and right socks, and it is time to do away with them.

I agree with you on the childrens socks. My grandkids had some of them. It helped to learn the right and left feet. I think that is a good thing for kids. But mu hubby isn't a kid. No wait I take that back..LOL

Hello sharryCD..I like that..He probably did say that we don't to be bothered with the left and right deal for our socks. I know that I don't need the difference for my little feet. Have a nice day and better tomorrow..

Well, your husband is wrong that socks are made like shoes. But, I will tell you; after my husband wears his socks for the day, I can tell what sock came off of what foot. Sounds odd, but after wearing them all day, they seem to shape theirselves from each foot.

Actually, it's not as crazy as it sounds. And to tell you the truth, I hadn't thought about this in ages until your discussion. I can't say that the socks I wear now are like that, but when I was a child, there definitely was a sock for the left foot, and a sock for my right foot. Maybe it was because they were socks for children, maybe it was the brand...Perhaps the socks weren't sold in a pack, and being sold individually made the difference. But I do remember that about the socks very clearly.

I had never heard of this until we got married a few years back. I don't match my socks up at all and don't ever remember doing so. I think that maybe he has tender feet and things like are bothersome to him. Who knows right. I still love him though. Thanks for your comment. Have a good day..

No socks don't have a left and right. How you like to wear you will wear it that way. When i come from outside i put the right sock in the right shoe and the left sock in the left shoe and wear it as it is.Then it becomes my routine right and left.If i feel a sock is uneasy on one foot then i will shift it to the other leg or leave it as it is so later it will become all right.

Hi vicky
Now that is how I look at it too. Once you wear them then you can tell the difference. When they first get washed then I think he can't tell no more which is which and that it doesn't matter. Now hubby still says that you can tell..LOL..I just laugh at him and go on..Thanks for sharing and you have a great day. Keep smiling.

I doubt there is a designated foot for the sock....unless maybe ones for kids that say left and right on it.

Of course they have a right and left. The one is on your left leg MUST be left type, isn't it ? :-))
Sure, that is valid until you exchange left with right, yet again you'll have a left (ex-right) and right (ex-left).
However, there are special socks made for each leg .. rare items but they exist.
