What do you do with your old socks?

What do you do with your old socks? Once they get a hole in the toe, or the heel gets worn out, do you use your old socks for something else? Or do you just throw them away? I have been trying to come up with some purposes for old things and socks and toothbrushes are the only 2 things I can think of that we use for something else once it is worn out for original purpose. Any ideas? Anything else that you use for something other than it's original intended purpose, after it gets worn out?

Old socks I use for dusting.....put it right over my hand...it's also nice for protecting your hand when you are painting....if you don't have a glove around...old toothbrushes are used for painting in my craft room for "spattering" different things.....also for cleaning in the bathroom to get nooks and cranny's I might otherwise miss!

That's a pretty good idea. I never thought about using an old sock to put on my hand when I am painting. Depending on how much painting I have to do, sometimes my hand will get completely covered with little specks of paint. Especially if I am using a thick paint roller. If you could get one to fit just right, this would save me days of scrubbing my hands well after the cleanup. Thank you for your tips. This will come in very handy. Have a great day!

I use the old socks for something dirty . For example, i`m getting the socks wet, and i`m cleaning the jamb . There it`s a lot of dust with water, i mean it`s a lot of dirty . So , i clean the jamb with my old socks , and then i`m throwing them . The toothbrush .. that will make you think a little. With the toothbrush ( the old one ) i`m cleaning the sole of my adidas . And maybe the hole adidas if it works better . The sole will be so clean after a little brushing ..

Hi there delkar, and thank you for your response in this discussion. I know a lot of times there will be something totally disgusting that I don't want to use a decent rag to clean. Then I will grab and old pair of socks that has a hole in it. I will do exactly what you said, clean the mess and then just toss the old sock into the garbage can. This way I don't have to wash it and get the grime or grease on my good towels.

This is sooo funny. Usually I cut mine up and use them for cleaning rags, you know instead of my good towels, or paper towels. And if they get really messed up I simply throw them out....well I was watching rachel ray last week and on there a lady was showing how you can recycle old towels into a shag style throw rug. You get some carpet wire thing...well I forgot what it was called but I had some plastic fencing I used for outside and cut it down to a small size cut up the socks into strips and tied them onto the wiring....now I have a cute little fluffy throw rug. I figured if you could do it with old towels you can with old socks and it worked. It took less than a week....really probably a day or two depending on how much time you want to devote to it....I did mine while I was watching tv at the end of the day. I plan on making more.

Oh how cool. That is an excellent idea for recycling those old socks. And it seems like I am always in need of a new throw rug. If I get a chance I am going to look that episode up online. I would love to learn how to do this. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas in this discussion, and have a wonderful day!

It's really simple....and I just finished a second one today. I started it last night while I was watching tv and finished it up this morning. This time instead of socks I used some old sweat, an old tank top and sweater all within the same colors. It's kinda fun now. Oh, and I didn't use the actual carpet wire thing. I had some plastic fence, kinda like chicken wire, but plastic, because the lady on the show said you had to stretch out the other one in order to tie the strips onto it...so it was already bid enough. Give it a go and you will get pretty creative with it. Now I am running out of cleaning rags LOL

You are too funny taface412! It almost sounds like the old latch hook kits that I used to do when I was a kid. I didn't do them very often, but they were definitely addicting. I remember my favorite was the one I did of Scooby Doo!

I use them for rags, to clean things that are really yucky, like the dip stick when I check my oil in my truck, I always keep a couple under the seat. I'll slip them over my hand if I have to pick something yucky up! tdemex

I too hate to touch anything that is yucky. Funny how you use that word, I like it. You have put a smile on my face today. Even if it is something that isn't that disgusting, I will use them when it is convenient. I just cleaned a couple of old chairs that had been sitting around for a long time the other day. They weren't that nasty, but it was handy to just use the old socks.

Old socks are used for our extented ladders..My husband puts them on the ends so they don't scare the paint on the gutters. I use them for dusting and the toothbrush is good for cleaning in spots you can't normally get to with anything else like to scrub behind the bathroom sinks for instance.

Oh my goodness, Sherric1222. What an excellent idea! We are always working on different properties, and I would have never thought of using old socks to put on the end of the ladders. That is a great solution to such a problem. Thank you so much for sharing this here in this discussion! Have a wonderful day!

When our socks get worn out they usually just get thrown out. I kept them at one time and used then for dust rags, but i don't anymore.

In today's world there are so many conveniences. You can pick up something that is a lot easier to dust with, like one of those swifter products. So I am not very surprised that not everyone keeps old dust rags as much as they used to. Thank you for your response in this discussion and have a lovely day!

Hi, I use old socks for rags to clean oily or dirty spots on the floors and old toothbrushes for cleaning out corners, or digging out dirt and hair stuck in drain-holes in the bathrooms. I use old tshirts and towels mostly as floor rags; especially for wet feet. I also keep glass jars, especially those with wide openings to store candies and sweets - I find these airtight.

It sounds as if you have found a number of ways to reuse several things around the house. That's great. I have never reused the jars, like a number of people have discussed here. But I definitely think I am going to have to start coming up with some use for them. Thank you for your response in this discussion, and have a great day here on myLot!

i do have lots of old socks. anyways, i do just keep them so when i will have a need of them that i can just use them. i always remember where i place them . they are mostly used for waxing the floor. we often do that. sometimes when we need some piece of cloth for whatever purpose it will need. any need for a cloth for one time use only and would not be washed after using it cause it may be used for some very dirty work that would not save the cloth with any washing or will just render the cloth after one time use or work. so those are the purpose of my old socks.

That sounds very similar to my uses of those old socks. However, this did remind me that I do have some older socks that I don't wear very often because the elastic is stretched out. A lot of times, I will use these as a second pair of socks. I will wear them over top of another pair in my home, if my feet get too cold. Or if I am working outside in the cold, I will wear them as a second pair inside my boots. Thank you for your response in this discussion, and have a great day here on myLot!

Yes, I feel that I have made very good use of my old socks! I am a keen cyclist and I found my old socks very useful when it comes to cleaning my bicycle chain. I have a stockpile of them which are used for old rags. They say that it's good to get into the habit of recycling well this I'm doing by finding other uses for my old socks. Andrew

That sounds like a great use for old socks. They probably come in handy for cleaning up the bike after you ride or if it gets a little dust accumulation as well. I know when I had a motorcycle, it had so many small crevices that would accumulate dirt. Very hard to keep clean. Thanks for responding in this discussion, and have a great day here on myLot!

I have found a tremendous use for old socks through the years. However, I have gotten even more ideas from the users here in this discussion. I think myLot is a great place to share ideas and remind each other of things that we have forgotten from our past. Thank you for your response in this discussion, and have a great day here on myLot!

Thanks for this very interesting discussion. No, I don't throw away old socks right off the bat. First of all, they make for great rags for cleaning the windows so some of our old socks go to that purpose. The fact that they are mostly cotton makes them work a lot better than using paper towels. The don't leave as much lint behind. The other use that we've found for old socks is that they make great tug of war toys for our dogs. We will put a knot in the middle of them so that the dogs can fight fair and that we can differentiate the dog's socks from the still wearable socks.

What a cute idea! I think it's great that your pets get the pleasure of using something that some people might otherwise just toss a side. Dogs are great! Most of my friends and family have dogs, and they always remember me no matter how long it has been since the last time that they have seen me. If a sock gets a hole in the toe or heel you can mend it if they are in good shape otherwise. Back in the day they called it "darning". Basically you get out a needle and some thread and closely stitch back and forth across the hole. Then you still have a good pair of socks. This is the least wasteful thing to do in my opinion. There is the obvious dust rag or cleaning cloth idea. If the sock is long and not disgusting you could cut off the part with the hole in it or "darn" it then fill it will rice, sew both ends and use it for a neck warmer. You heat it in the mircrowave and drap it across your neck to heat and relax tense muscles. You could cut several socks into strips, braid them tighttly together, knot both ends and make a dog chew toy. I did this once with yucky old kitchen towels. How about making a sock monkey? I saw one in target the other day for $15!!

Wow, a sock monkey. I haven't seen those since I was a kid. I guess they were popular way back in the day. I wonder if they are coming back. They must be, if they want fifteen bucks for one. That is utterly ridiculous. Wow! I wonder if it was imported?

Ok at the risk of sounding completely weird I will tell you what I sometimes did with my old socks in middle school. Now of course they have to be washed and clean but I found that they serve as a very neat way to create the perfect hairbun! Here's how ya do it. It works best with shoulder length hair i suppose since too much hair can make it look messy and too short of hair won't wrap all the way around. But anywho....first you take your sock and snip of the toe section. Roll the sock from the ankle part all the way down creating a donut. Put your hair in a pony then slide the donut shaped sock over the pony covering your rubber band. take the hair spouting out from the pony tail and hide the sock underneath your hair by flipping some hair up to both sides and down. of course you'll need to conseal the sock completely by spreading the hair out in the diagnal directions too then put either a rubber band or scrunchie around to hold the hair in place. Now you have a perfectly round donut shaped bun!!! :-D

WOW that is really great. I have tried and tried to get my hair in a french twist don't know how many times. So I bought many many little tools to help me but I never managed to get a nice french twist donut shaped buns yeah more so. Anyways during all my trails trying to get a nice french twist I never did think if the idea of using an old sock. I'm usually pretty creative when in need maybe I just wasn't in need that time. Awesome idea

I throw them out. When it come's to being worn out I still wear them. I don't care if they have a hole in them or not. It's my socks not yours. My mom laughs at me for doing that. I guess that's just me. XD

I guess it depends on the climate where you live. However, if my feet get cold, my whole body gets cold. So I try to keep only good thick socks in the drawer. I remember through the years, especially when I was younger that the heels would wear out on my socks so quick. I am glad now that my mom has learned to buy me new socks for Christmas. It may not seem like the best Christmas gift in the world, and the taste may not always suit me, but as long as they are warm, I will wear them. Thank you for your response in this discussion. hello kykidd, i'm just throwing my old socks. can't think of anything to make them useful except that to use them to make me warm when i'm not feeling well like if i have a high fever. i don't use my socks in going out when i'm sick. i use the old ones. other than that, no more.

Oh yes, you have brought out a good point here Robert19ph. I remember when I was a little kid and I would get sick. My mom would take one of my step father's old socks, and put Vicks salve on my neck, chest and back. Then she would wrap the old sock around my neck and fasten it with a safety pin. In the morning I always felt much better. Thank you for your response in this discussion and have a great day here on myLot!

it depends. if money is tight and i cannot afford new ones i mend them. if the hole is really big i throw them out and if the socks are really worn in the garbage they go. socks usually last a long time though so if they are to the point that they have holes most times they are at the end of their life cycle and i just chuck them.

It must be because my big toe sticks out, or because I walk on my heels, I'm not sure. But it seems like my socks are generally in fairly good shape when they start to get holes in them. And if my feet get cold, then my whole body gets cold. So I don't have too much of a tendency to keep wearing them once they have a hole in them. Thank you for your response in this discussion, and have a great day!

I guess different people use them for different things. But it seems like there are a lot of people who use them for cleaning. I have been using them as old rags since I was a little kid. I guess my mom was always very frugal, and it just rubbed off on me. Like you say, why should we go out and buy dust clothes when we can just use old socks or other old clothing instead of tossing them in the trash. I use my socks for rags, especially my husband's tube socks. Toothbrushes are great to scrub the grout in your tiles and to get hard to reach narrow places. I also use nice big plastic butter and yogurt containers to put leftovers or old oil in. Same for glass jars. Some cardboards and tin foils, if clean can be reused, or my daughter can use for craft materials. Old stained and/or ripped clothing can also be used for rags or my daughter takes the nice parts and uses it for making doll clothes or crafts. Also save the buttons before throwing the clothes out. Great for crafts. I save cardboard boxes to reuse when I'm shipping something. Also, save shoeboxes and bigger boxes for my cats. They love playing in them. There are a lot of things you can clean and paint and use as decorations, flower pots etc. I don't think I can think of anything else right now.

Back in the days after the depression, I don't think that anyone through anything away. I heard about people who would keep a nail if they pulled it out of a board, and if they needed to, they would even straighten it. In some ways, I think that we should all be like this, and then we wouldn't have so many needs. But then again, if everyone was like that it would really destroy our economy.

I would make it into a mop for the floor. It is very effective and clean the tiles thoroughly. I throw away socks that are no longer clean and nice to look at I rather throw them than keeping them for no purpose at all. As long as it is still usable I would still keep them and wear them. Socks are really expensive now a days you know.

I know a lot of people don't think that they cost very much, but for some people any type of clothing can be very expensive to replace. I have had some of my socks for years. However, my mom has now started buying me socks for gifts. It is nice to have new socks to wear! Thank you for your great ideas and your response here in this discussion.
