Hi vandana!
I love to listen to both types of Hindi songs and I am fan of good songs. I feel that old songs used to have very strong wordings or lyrics and one could render it anytime and sing it. However, the newer songs, though looks catchy and one feels like dancing on those songs, cannot be remembered for their wordings. They just have music with any relevant or memorable lyrics. Someone once said to me - "Old songs were for listening and new songs are for 'watching'.

Hi Vandana!
I agree with you that lyrics of 'Meri maa' of 'Taarey Zamin par' were exceptional, which were written by Prasoon Joshi. Prasson Joshi has penned some very good songs. But these kind or exceptions are rare now a days, in good olden days, you could have listened to any song for its music and lyrics and you would have enjoyed listening to it:
Like:
"Aapki nazroon na samja pyar k kabil mujhey.........
"May pal to pal ka shyaar huin, pal to pal meri kahani hai, pal do pal meri hasti hai, pal do pal meri jawani hai...........
"Babuji dhirey chalna pyar may jara sambhalana"
and recently one old song has been copied for a new movie either love aaajkal or Kaminey
the song is:
Tan doley, era man doley.....
dil ka hua karar, kaun bazay bansuriaa.......
then there is another one:
"dil dundhta hai fursat ka raat din...........in the movie Mausam, which is an evergreen song.
Deepak
PS - pl. check your Pms.

Did u come across Gulzaar's "Aisi bhi baatein hoti hain..." Anupama, and even the "ya dil ki suno duniyawalon". And "Har aas ashqbaar hai, har saans bequaraar hai" Kinare Kinare, Lata. I can listen to these type of numbers throughout the day, and feel as if I have had a very good time. :) I love music. :) Was it Shelley who said Our sweetest songs are those that have saddest thoughts? I must check this one. Thanks for coming up with good list of songs. Nowadays, nobody even knows them. :)

Hi deepak, I liked the quote "Old songs were for listening and new songs are for 'watching'". But I think none of the lyrics of old songs can ever match "Main kabhie batalata nahin, teri parwaha karta hun mein maa - tujhe sab hain pata..meri maa". May be u can come up with something worth comparing. I used to like masoom's "Tujhse naaraj nahin zindagi hairaan hu main". But this beats it by miles.

I prefer old songs. The reason is that the songs were meaningful. Now a days they write the songs about anything they see.Only the music is good now a days.I was a great fan of Kishore Kumar once & had all the collections of him.I dont know where they have gone now as we dont use cassettes now.

Hi krupesh, :) Well, u asked for it. Its like inviting Count Dracula to ur home. . Which are ur favorite Kishore Kumar numbers, solos and duets, and why do u like them? I'd say my favorite would be Thandi hawa yeh chandni suhani, e mere dil suna koi kahani.. and among duets, CAT cat, cat maane billi...

Hi krupesh, even I like Kishore Kumar a lot. I dont think Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan could fill that gap. He was at his best in yoddling, dont u think? U know something this discussion could go on - really looong like the one with the previous mylotter, :) music is something I could discuss for hours and never tire of it. . But u wont earn anything for it. If u r willing for losing monies, I am a game. Thanks for responding. :)

Well, often it really depends on what type of music it is that I am listening too that works for me as in the New stuff out there. I definately rely mostly on the older stuff and a lot of times that is what you'll find me definately listening too. Even with one of my genre's of music I listen to which is Christian music a lot of times the older Christian songs are what tends to move me and make others think for sure.

Hi KrauseHome, that is a category that hasn't been mentioned! Yeah, devotional songs and church choir are wonderful, they are easy to sing and are usually very melodious. U know, in India we have arranged marriages. The girl is all decked up and the boy's parents ask her to sing some song. Invariably what she renders is devotional song. ha ha. Well, thank god, the custom is going out. Thanks for reminding that there is this category as well. And thanks for responding. :) Happy mylotting. :)

I do love old songs more. Same here I could relate to some old songs as it's part of the beautiful memories and nice to hear them from time to time. I also love few new songs though, I enjoy singing with my children.

I'll say its 50-50 for me. I loves both old and new songs because I think they're both good in their own way. Oldies bring back childhood memories as well as some events of my childhood days and new songs give me a feel of the modern era and makes me feel young.
Well, I'll say that without the past there won't be any of the present and without revamping the 'old' to make them new/fresh would cause life to be boring and no excitement.

Hi dknkyle, I agree with u. Actually, I love all forms of music. So u can say I am "addicted" to music. I have just been around longer, and therefore, I know more old numbers than youngsters like u. :) And I am now listening to the present numbers as well. I think both old and new numbers deserve equal respect. The older numbers had less orchestration, and that perhaps is one of the reasons they sound more melodious. Even the tunes of older numbers were easier. The latest numbers test the versatility of the singer, and have plenty of musical instruments making their presence felt - which incidentally was rare in older numbers. But there is ample melody here as well, for those who really enjoy music. :) Thank u for joining in discussion dknkyle. :) Have a good day. :)

Presently i would like to say new over old are preferred for me. But everything has it's special place. It is just a matter of time. The thing here is we listen new songs more often than old ones. Therefore sometimes it feels that old are way better than new ones. But if we listen old songs on regular basis, we get use to them and finally a bit bore :P hehe exactly as in case if we hear new ones regularly.
PS: In above we should b replaced by I
hehe
Gud Day

Hi Abhii, Am I glad to c u back.:) U r a very sensitive and caring person. I remember how u consoled me in one of ur own discussions. Hope u will be around regularly.:) Coming to ur point, I suppose so. Well, I cant really agree with it a 100 percent. A few years ago, tu cheez badi hai mast mast was a rage, and so also numbers like Aaja Shaam hone aayi, (Maine Pyaar Kiya), or more recently Maiyya, Maiyya, or even Telephone dhun mein hasne waali (They are Rehman's numbers mind u). But very few remain in mind. Many of these numbers - 10 years down the lane, will be oh yes, I remember something like that. Only the truly excellent ones will continue to haunt our memories like Dil hai chota sa, choti si aasha. So what u hear more often may soon leave ur memory! We had songs from Hema Malini and Dharmendra starrers, and so also Zeenat Aman and Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna movies. Hardly anybody remembers them, isn't it?

However much I try to enjoy the new songs I just go back to the old songs to enjoy.I just cannot find the life and music geniusness in the new ones.I am willing to enjoy that is absolutely enjoyable whether it is old or new.But there are no new music makers up to the mark.
So 'Mera dil gatha rahe 'only the old songs.

Yeah - even I like the songs that I heard when I was in my teens. :) May be it is the age and happy company that make them sound so nice. Dont worry all these worries will disappear and better times will come. Dont leave hope, and dont leave songs. Thanks for responding. Have a nice day. :)

Undeniably melodious, and singable if I can coin that word. Try singing Shankar Mahadevan's breathless. Cant. Not beyond a couple of lines. Beautiful number but cant sing. :( And Beedi Jalayi le - too embarassing to sing even if the tune is catchy. :( Yes - we do feel past is good. Because we omit the bad times in it. Actually at that point of time, our complete energies and brain power would have been devoted to solving what we considered a big problem. As time passes, those problems are solved and become insignificant. So we remember only the happy part. Thanks for responding bhanusb. Its been a pleasure knowing ur thoughts as usual. :) Have a great day. :)

Hi vandana, I seem to be totally oblivious to new songs and am rather stuck in a time warp, not from my childhood but from my teen and twenty someting years. If I liked a song then I'll still like it now and in my mind the old ones are the best. The only childhood ones that stand out are anything at all by Frank Sinatra as my mother only possessed his records but I can still appreciate the old crooner when I hear one of his songs again.

Yeah it is strange but when we feel depressed we turn to old numbers rather than new ones - even though it is the new numbers that are more happier ones. And listening to those numbers really helps in soothing our nerves. Personally, without music I would have found very tough. :) Thank u for sharing ur thoughts. :) Have a great day. :)

I would say that it depends on the time of the day. When it is within the hours of 7 in the morning until 12 noon, I prefer new songs that are upbeat because it is the time when I am most active. I do the chores within those hours. I like old and love songs from 1 PM to 4 PM. That is when I and my son take a nap.

I agree with u. I too get up screaming latest numbers. When my maid looks at me oddly I try to justify saying it is good for lungs. ha ha. But as day progresses I become calmer. By late evenings it is really pensive ones appeal. Afternoons - and evenings are for classicals, folk, or god's numbers in my life. :) Thank u for responding. Have a nice day. :)

It is hard to decide one out amongst so many of Lata Mangeshkar's, Asha Bhonsle's, Geeta Dutt's, Noor Jahan's, Surraiya's, Alka Yagnik's, Shreya Ghoshal's, P. Suseela's, Jikki's, Vani Jayaram's, S. Janaki's, Chitra's, K.L. Saigal's, Talat Mehmood's, Kishore Kumar's, Hemant Kumar's, Sonu Nigam's, Kumar Sanu's, Shankar Mahadevan's, S P Balasubramanyam's,..... numbers. And that is not all - I like English music as well :( Right now - at this moment - I can think of - Jyoti kalash chalake - sung by Lata Mangeshkar - for Bhaabhi ki Choodiyan. And amongst the new ones - Mein kabhi batalata nahin, par andhere se darta hoon mein maa. But I really cant decide - tomorrow morning it might be Beedi Jalai le. Very very tough question for me...
