Science doesn't know all there is to know about diabetes. they still aren't sure what causes it. But they do know some things that contribute to it. Diabetes can be inherited and run in some families. If it does run in the family then is a 25% chance it will be handed down.
It can also be caused by diet. A diet heavy in foods such as refined carbohydrates such as biscuits, breads, cakes, ice creams and pudding have a higher risk of getting it.
Obesity is a large cause of diabetes. due to the extra fat the insulin can't function properly.
virus infections, smoking, age, emotional stress can all contribute to getting diabetes.
Diabetes is the the body not using the insulin properly.
This is my understanding from What I have read.

You cna eat lots of sugar and not have diabetes if your pancreas is producing the insulin you need to process that sugar. Diabetes is a genetic realted illness. You have more chances of having it if you have family with it.
Fortunatly, now, with insulin and pills plus a diet, you can control a lot the illness.
Take care!

The second, the inefficient production of insulin by the pancreas, is the technical definition for what diabetes is. As for what causes this deficiency, there can be many factors. Diabetes can be hereditary, and it can also be caused by certain bad lifestyle choices like eating too many sugary foods, not getting enough exercise, and being overweight. There is no food that causes diabetes on its own- it's the failure to eat certain foods in moderation that can lead to problems.

As a person that has diabetes, I can tell you that it can be brought on by many things. Food and eating sugar is not the only reason to have diabetes. The pancrease does not produce the insulin that is needed. But the lifestyle that you lead, being over weight, the foods we eat, other health problem, along with drinking too much, all cause diabetes. I was what they called borderline, got a horrible case of poison ivy, was put in hospital and was shot up with steriods to try and combat the posion ivy to a point that It brought the diabetes to a head. Now I have to take medicine for it. Lots of people are borderline and never know it.

Food does not cause diabetes, although obesity is a risk factor. Diabetics should avoid certain types of food, including carbohydrates such as starches and sugars.
In Type 1 diabetes, the body doesn't produce insulin. With Type 2 diabetes, insulin is produced, but the body is unable to use it properly.
