Hi,
How many of you sleep in the afternoon. I have heard that sleeping in afternoon is not good for health. I only sleep in the afternoon when I'm tired or feeling tired and not daily. What about you? Do you sleep in the afternoon daily just as you do at the night?

even from childhood I never used to sleep because I really didn't like the Idea of wasting time sleeping. So even when all my family members sleeps in the afternoon, I used to do something or the other. Even now I sleep only according to my timing & that will be in the morning around 6-7 or so!!!
Happy Lotting

I too from my childhood used to never sleep in the afternoon . In fact I used to hate sleeping in the afternoon and used to wonder how can people sleep in the afternoon. But now since last 4-5 years I do take a nap sometimes in the afternoon if I'm tired.

Well. I have not heard that sleeping in the afternoon is bad. In fact, in my country where I grew up, the Philippines, when I was a child my mother would always tell us to sleep during the afternoon.
I don't see any harm to the health in it as I grew up to be a healthy adult.
I see to it that sleeping during the afternoon is like a nap time or rest and not a deep sleep like at night. I also see to it that I can sleep at least an hour in the afternoon and 8 hours at night to have a very good night sleep.
This is only my opinion. Thank you.

Exactly what I feel. Taking a short nap in afternoon is OK but one must avoid taking a deep sleep like we do at the night.

i rarely, if ever, sleep during the day. sometimes i sit and relax in the afternoon and sometimes doze lightly for about 15 to 20 minutes but that is it. i heard that resting or sleeping for 20 minutes during the day cna be very refreshing and make you feel better and for me it is true. i so rarely get to relax but when i lightly doze or rest with my eyes closed for 20 minutes i do feel better and get a second wind to get through the rest of the day.

If I ever sleep in the afternoon, it's usually just a nap I've
drifted into, that I usually awake from after 20 minutes anyway.
And OP, I'm not sure what you've read, yet from I've been informed, having a snooze during the afternoon is actually supposed to have positive health benefits.

Taking a nap may have positive health benefits but sleeping for long time in afternoon may not be good.

I don't know where you got that information... but i believe that sleeping in the afternoon has its own health benefits... there are some countries where they have siesta time... and all businesses are close because people would be taking their afternoon nap...
But in my case... even if i want to... i rarely sleep in the afternoon... even if i do not have any work... i just can't get any shut eye... even for just a few minutes...

just a nap is not bad but sleeping for long time for say 2 to 3 hours is not good. This is what I have heard as well as read in some newspapers and magazines.

hiya,
wow it would be a luxury if i could take a nap in the afternoon.
to be honest never ever got a chance to. I work the whole day so i only get a good night sleep.
I wonder if i do get a chance to take a nap would i actually be able to. Guess your body has to be customed to sleep in the afternoons.

A good night sleep is certainly enough and better than sleeping in the afternoon unless one is tired or sick.

I don't usually sleep during the afternoon. It's something that I have the habit of doing. The only time that I might take a nap in the afternoon is why I'm sick, not feeling too well, working really hard with not much sleep, or something to that effect. I don't know why, but it's just the way that I do it.

I also do not usually sleep in the afternoon. If I sleep late in the night or if I'm tired or sick then only I sleep for sometime in the afternoon otherwise not.

I sleep everyday in the afternoon.I got into this habit in 1983 when i was working in Muscat for 4 years. In the Gulf coutries everyone takes a siesta for 2 hours since it is very hot in the afternoon. Actually the short nap that we take refreshes us and makes us more energetic to work afterwards till late evening. Now that i am back home and retired i find this nap of about 20 mins very refeshing and do not feel lazy at all.Perhaps it may be due to my habit but though i lie down for a couple of hours i really do not sleep but take a catnap of 15 to 20 mins.then i am ready to take on the world feeling invigorated. Actually doctors say that a nap in the afternoon makes people work much harder.I had read a report of this in the news paper some time ago.

Yes a small nap is good to get refreshed but a long sleep is certainly not good in the afternoon.

Yes you are right. When I sleep in the afternoon especially when I sleep for long time then it becomes difficult to sleep in the night I do not easily go to sleep in the night if I had slept in the afternoon.

When I was still in college and during my review for the board exams, I sleep in the afternoon every single day.. I think it was already set in my body clock that during the afternoon, I should be asleep.. well, the only bad thing that happened to me was that I gained a couple of pounds... due to oversleeping and lack of exercise.
Now that I'm working though, i really can't sleep in the afternoon anymore, or else I would get kicked out of my job. hehehe.

It is good that you are busy in your job now and do not get time to sleep in the afternoon as sleeping in the afternoon increases fat and laziness especially if you sleep right after lunch.

Hi aditya,
I rarely sleep in the afternoon. Sometimes when I am so tired and want to sleep I can't sleep at all. I might closed my eyes but I still can hear all the noise.
But sleep a little bit actually good especially when you want to woke up at the night. Just sleep for 10 minutes or half an hour the most will fresh up your body and mind. But too much sleep will make your body weak and lazy.

Yes taking a short nap of half an hour will not do much harm and it will certainly fresh up mind and body but sleeping for long time in the afternoon should be avoided.

I sleep in the afternoon almost everyday, usually because I never sleep well during the night (because I always stay until late studying or watching TV and I need to wake up at 6AM), so, I'm always soooo tired during the day. But, I just like to sleep in the afternoon because even in the weekend I tend to sleep after the lunch for a couple of hours. It's just good!

yes. i do and i have to sleep on the afternoon break or i have no energe to work the whole afternoon later. i think that's a good manner and i heard if we sleep half an hour on the afternoon break that can equal to 2 hours sleeping on the night. and i even heard there are some companies on america have forced their staffs to have afternoon sleep.

Yea, i do sleep in the afternoon when im really really tired. I do believe in short power naps where i gain energy after a short period of time spent sleeping. I dont know if its good or bad for health. I used to have friends who sleep in afternoon regularly, like after school. They dont seem to have any problems. I dont sleep in the afternoon daily.

No, I don't like to sleep in the afternoon. I feel really groggy if I sleep for an hour or less & I'd just rather sleep at night. Also, I'm usually not so tired in the day that I feel like taking a nap would help me. I do feel like tired, but a lack of sleep is very likely not the problem considering I sleep for 8 or so hours already.
