Do you get annoyed at discussion topics written with wrong grammar?

I know that not everyone here in mylot is a native English speaker. But it's a good thing to read views of different people all over the world who come from various countries. I have no big issues against discussions with wrong spellings or even bad grammar as long as the member is able to express what he/she wants to say. I understand that people who started them are trying their best to improve their English writing and communicating skills. And I'm sure that someday, with practice and perseverance, they would get it right. However, some discussions are plainly garbled and unintelligible. In short, nobody could understand what the person means!!! Now that is annoying. What about you? What irritates you about mylot discussions?

I don't usually have an issue with the spelling and grammer that people use in their discussions because I can usually figure out what these people are trying to say. I actually think it is great to see people here that are non-English as a native language here trying to improve their English. I like you do know that with perserverance they will eventually get it right. What actually irritates me is when other mylotters will make a negative comment toward these people that are trying their hardest to improve their English.

Yes, I also applaud the efforts of those who are doing their hardest to be understood when they make or respond to discussions. And yes, I am disappointed too at other mylotters who tend to be so critical of these people. They should at least learn to discern who are making great efforts to post legible answers from those who are typing nonsensical words just to earn from the posts even if what they wrote are totally garbage.

Hi doran, That you are tolerant with the wrong sentence structure and spelling is great. But that you get irritated when some people make negative comment on them is what you can do one thing. As per mylot TOS no one is entitled to ridicule or make offensive or negative comment on others English writing and if it is detected action could be taken against th offender. So if you see such thing in future do report abuse.

I don't really mind about other people's spelling or grammar as long as they could send their message.. it's fine... i have talked to a lot of mylotters who are non-english speakers and they are actually here to practice the english, and they love the wonderful helpful community there is here... (plus the money)... I agree with doran... I am more irritated when people tyr to correct others with their spelling or grammar...

Hi writermom, This is natural particulatyly for people like me to get annoyed who is in the teaching job to locate a discussion with innumerable grammatical mistakes, let alone spellings. And the problem is as per mylot TOS you can not offend any one even if they are with horrible English. Earlier I would get irritated but now I try to bear with them and a new category has been introduced entitled "better your english". I hope those who are interested to correct and better their English communication would ask for help or if they continue with erratic erroneous English it would be no worthwhile stying.

Same here. In my line of work, I find it intolerable when I get emails from supposedly fellow writers who write badly. Like you, I recognize that it's different here in mylot and that we must try to understand those who are working hard to improve their English. But yes, if some insist on just posting nonsense stuff just to earn, I doubt if they will improve anything.

Yes, I do get annoyed by bad spelling and grammar, although sometimes, I must admit I am guilty of such myself. Mostly because I am too hasty in posting, and I just hit the post button without reviewing. I agree that there are a lot of non-native English speakers here in mylot.com, but there are some, like people from my country, that churn out topic after topic with horrible grammar and spelling. I think I get more annoyed by these than by wrong grammar posts from other countries mainly because I expect more from our own, since English is so widely spoken here. English is also a required subject in our schools, and most of the subjects are even taught in English. Aside from that, I also get annoyed by nonsense posts.

As a fellow Filipino, I agree with you. Our school system has English subjects to specifically teach students how to converse and write in this foreign language. Unfortunately, the standard of teaching has gone down so much that even teachers are horrible at English. My fourth grader was telling me just the other day, "Mom, my teacher can't write in proper English!" Imagine that statement coming from a 10-year-old! Anyway, back to mylot, bad grammar and spelling are still tolerable somewhat as long as they are understood. But nonsense posts that get nonsense replies from equally silly members are simply unbearable.

I am not that annoyed with discussions with wrong grammar, but I am very annoyed with discussions with totally meaningless. Some wrong grammar is still okay for me as long as I can understand what the person is trying to say. But there are some who just type their way and have totally no idea what the who discussion is trying to say or explain. That annoys me.

I know what you mean. It really is truly annoying to encounter discussions that have no sense at all.

There is no dout that some people come to mylot to improve their English level. Well, it is ok. But I saw some suggestions on how to express what he/she wants to say for those who cannot express well in English. The suggestion is that using the instant translastion tool on the web. Personally, there exist many mistakes in the sentences translated by the tool on the web. That kind of expressions should not be posted on mylot. Those people may just view the web page of mylot, learn correct expression from others and then try to express themselves correctly.

I very seldom find those web translation tools very helpful. When Ciao was still around, there were lots of cheaters who simply used those translation websites to plagiarize and post nonsensical reviews that are truly horrendous to read. It's better to read English books or online articles on grammar and writing if one really wants to improve his/her English.

I joined myLot just a few days ago, and I must admit I was surprised at the poor quality of so many discussions and responses. It's not just the grammar and spelling errors, but also strange usage of upper and lowercase letters. Some discussions look as though they were submitted by robots, and I'm wondering if that's actually the case. Even if it doesn't make sense, the discussion will be counted as a submission by the author.

I agree! Some discussions simply do not make sense that you get to wonder what kinds of people would post things like those :p

Hi maryihla, u have participated in one of my discussions. Thank u. And it would be nice if u can point the errors. I really dont mind. And it is not insulting either. Anyways, hardly anybody reads thru others posts, so it wont feel odd. Please feel free to do that the next time u come across any mistakes on my part. I will really appreciate it. :) Have a good day. :)

Bad grammer or spelling from people whose native language is not English does not bother me as long as I can unserstand what they are trying to say. At least they are trying. What does annoy me is bad grammer and spelling errors from English speaking people who claim to be writers and really should know better or have a functional knowledge of how to use spell check. English is really not an easy language to grasp. Many words are spelled the same but have completely different meanings. See examples below: 1) The bandage was wound around the wound. 2) The farm was used to produce produce. 3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse. 4) We must polish the Polish furniture. 5) He could lead if he would get the lead out. 6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert. 7) Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present 8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum. 9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. 10) I did not object to the object. 11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid. 12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row... 13) They were too close to the door to close it. 14) The buck does funny things when the does are present. 15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line. 16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow. 17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail. 18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear. 19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests. 20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend? Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And don't even get me started ont the word "up"

I don't get annoyed by it. I understand that there are people from various countries here at mylot. English is not their first language so spelling mistakes and grammatical mistakes are possible.

I'm a non-English speaker but I try to get my spellings and grammar correct as much as possible even if it takes little longer to type as I want everyone to understand what I'm trying to say. Yes there are some discussions in which there are spelling and grammatical mistakes. It gets difficult to read such discussions and responses. But no one makes mistakes purposefully. They can certainly improve if they spend few days here.

My point exactly. If someone is earnest in improving his/her English, they should make an effort to do so. You can see the differences between discussions that were written with effort and those that were done for the sake of just making one. And the latter is what's really frustrating because I often can't make heads or tails of what they're trying to say!

The things that irritates me with myLot discussions are the same idea on a topic and wrong grammar that cannot be understood by anyone at all *like what you have said*. Sometimes when the topic is being repeated, the interest is already gone because it's quite hard to tell stories all over again but not at the same day.

I am not at all irritated when the response is written in bad English. For most of the people here on Mylot English is not their first language. So it is difficult for them to write in proper English. If I am not able to understand a discussion because of bad English I will not respond on it. Simple. But the thing that irritates me on Mylot is when people try to be unreasonalbe in their discussions. Otherwise I enjoy a lot being here on Mylot.

I hope this does not refer to me. :( Well, I am trying to improve. Yes, I do make mistakes, both typos as well as grammatic. :( But I think I do get my thoughts across. May be I dont. It is for u all to tell me. Like asking what i meant and what i didnt. Actually, I learnt something the other day from Andrew Freyne. I responded to his discussion about retirement - and I'd typed "after retirement", and in his reply he wrote "in retirement". I really appreciate that way of correcting. I dont know if he meant to correct me or not. But I took it like that. While responding I was truly in dilemma whether I should write "at retirement" or "when u retire". Well, what matters is I got it. I do make it a point to participate in discussions started by native English speakers for the sole reason that I get to improve my communication skills. Even if it looks like I am barging in - uninvited. :) And at least I hope u folks would tell me where I am going wrong. I can take it writermom. :)

well i do myself not a really good english speaker, so i never get annoyed reading such a bad grammar thread or comment :D But well thats true when the bad grammar turns into horror grammar, i have to analyze it twice to understand what they are reading, well if that wont help then i just read the writer profile, and look for his/her native country and analyze it with their own grammar:) PS : i always use online dictionary to check my grammar, but sometimes it cant help much though, so dont get annoyed with my comment kay:p

I dont mind if i read any post with incorrect grammar or spelling.I tis okay with me as long as i can understand what exactly the person are trying to say.I am not very good at grammar and i have to make sure my post or reply is can be understand by others.

I try to understand that the person making too many mistakes won't be as good with English as we are. Now that doesn't mean that I should ill treat that person or tease that person out of frustration. If he is my friend, then i would Pm him about the mistakes or else I'll leave it as I'm sure that one day he'll learn English much better. So I'll try to help that person if possible. What makes me irritated is when someone argues that they are right on a point where actually they are wrong. Without doing much research or just trying not to accept their mistake, they try to prove that they are wrong. Happy Lotting
