Do you need total concentration to enjoy a movie properly?

So last night I was going to watch this movie. I have some sort of a ritual during them. The house has to be completely dark, I have to be alone and I most focus the best way I can to enjoy it properly. Otherwise I feel like I can't watch the movie. It's kind of annoying at times, but it's just the way it works for me. So do you need to be totally concentrated and focused to best enjoy a movie? Or are you one of those vulgar people who like having noisy people around and food and don't care so much for the fine art of cinema properly?

I love seeing movies on the big silver screen, especially when they are movies that I have specially waited ages to see, I love Harry Potter, I love the Final Destination films and I like a film that I can really escape into and enjoy, but the trouble is that I dread going to the cinema, because I always seem to get selfish people who have their mobiles/cellphones going off in the middle, or they will walk in when the film has started and decide to sit near me or disturb me or sit in front of me. Then there's those that munch food noisily. I hate it, I know damn well that I will get disturbed somehow, it's like they home in on me like a magnet, so I can't relax and I can't concentrate and so the film is not totally appreciated. Then there are those who want to go to the toilet in the middle of the film or worst still when the best bit comes on and guess what they are sitting near me! Grrrrrrrrrrr Some people, vulgar indeed.

Haha, another reason why you should rather resort to your television instead! Wonder what special skill do you posess to attract the annoying ones nearby you when inside a cinema though. Any idea? :D

I do enjoy watching movies with others rather than watching them alone. But I don't like it if people do want to talk throughout it, that's annoying and seems pointless because I can't understand if I can't hear what's going on! I hate it when people are noisy at the cinema - I have paid good money to see the movie, and I can't stand people ruining the experience for me!

Fair enough of a first point that you're making there, but in both circunstances, you know you've chosen to be surrounded by people and that it might happen. So that's why prefer to play it safe and always watch everything alone.

I think there are certain cinemas which are likely to be ones that you will be less likely to be disturbed. It's usually teens that feel the need to be noisy at cinemas. So I try and go to cinemas where there are less likely to be a whole load of teens in the cinema.

I like to have peace and quiet when I watch a movie. I like to hear everything that is said and I also want to be able to concentrate on what is going on also. I hate it when people interrupt me during a movie. I hardly watch tv as it is.

And yet another person who agrees, hehe. As far as TV goes I don't put such a great deal concentrating because most of the time, whatever I watch in there is not for pure and absolute interest - rather for occasional entertainment or timewaste.

well i do like quiet so i dont miss anything important to the theme/plot of it all. i guess you really like to LIVE the movie, huh. i dont have to have dark. just so the light isnt glaring on the screen i like having pop corn, etc. and a break if its very long, cause i've got to go to bathroom or have a cig. , like intermission

Yeah, I think you worded it right there, I do like to live the movie. Maybe there's an inner actor in me that I have no idea about :D About the breaks...hate them. They ruin the feeling of a movie for me. So I'm glad I have this cinema channel that has no commercial breaks at all.

I think it mostly depends on whether I'm watching the movie in a cinema or not. At home on the couch watching DVDs I don't mind noise as much - in fact I think it's more enjoyable watching with friends and making comments whilst the movie is running. I have friends who are really annoyed when that happens though.
At the theaters I think everyone should keep quiet and limit themselves to the occasional whisper - and only if it's an absolute necessity. I think respect for others while you're watching the movie in a public place is essential for the enjoyment of all.

Well, you're exactly the opposite of me, then. Watching at the cinema is distracting for me because I know that sooner or later a big laughter or whatever will kick in at scenes that I personally might not enjoy that much. I guess I can't really support people with too much different views on movies compared to mine, heh. Maybe that's it.

i don't like it when people talk to me while i am watching a movie. that's why i don't really mind going to cinemas alone because most of the time, my companion would just disturb me and i don't like it. when i watch a movie at home, i do it in my room with some junk foods, close the door, turn off the lights and set the volume to maximum. it's just like being inside a movie theater.

Hm, we're not much alike then. Can't really get over the cinemas thing. For me they'd all be brought down :D Maybe. Another thing I don't like is watching or listening to things loud, I just find that it ruins the whole thing. It has to be on the accurate sound pitch, never too loud or too low.

i love movies and i love watching it with my wife. so it does not matter if she says something in the middle of a good scene or what as long as she is there watching with me. i just watch it again if i lost something between the good scenes. when we watch it in the movie house we are both quiet but when we watch it at home its okay for i can watch it over and over again.

So for you a lot of the watching movies experience is also about the pleasure you take out of watching it alongside your wife. Fair enough in that case. However not all of us have another half whom to enjoy certain activities, so something is lacking for those. Not my case however, even if I did have another half currently I'd still rather watch movies on my own. Thanks for the reply anyway.

Haha, well, I don't agree on the last part. I feel uneasy when laid down in bed, so it'd only make worse for me. But thanks for agreeing, I thought I'd get more people disagreeing but so far it's been a bit surprising!
