Each company decides on a name after some consideration. There are some interesting stories/anecdotes.
To begin with, Yahoo founders Jerry Yang and David Filo considered themselves yahoos!!!!!
The word yahoo was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in book Gulliver's Travels.
It represents a person who is repulsive in appearance and action and is barely human.

AMOCO = American Oil Company
A & P = Atlantic & Pacific .. grocery store chain in the 50's & 60's. Don't know if it still exists or not. Not in this area, anyway
Wal-Mart, of course was Sam Walton's version of his name. And his dog foods sold in the stores are Ol' Roy named after his favorite hunting dog.
