The White House has just released a copy of the president's speech that he is scheduled to give tomorrow, September 8th, to the nation's schoolchildren.
You can find it here:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/MediaResources/PreparedSchoolRemarks/
Aside from some creative stories about his childhood and his childhood eduction, it seems pretty bland and most kids will probably snore through it, just like they do when their parents talk to them.
Any thoughts? Any objections? Will you discuss this with your kids before they see it?

I got to the part where Obama said "I get it. I know what that’s like. My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mother who struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn’t always able to give us things the other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. There were times when I was lonely and felt like I didn’t fit in. IMO the "us" gives the impression that there were more than one child to raise. When Obama's sister came along she was NOT single but married to another Muslim husband.
So once again out leader is distorting the facts...NOT a good examples for our children.
It was at the East-West Center that Dunham met Lolo Soetoro, a student from Indonesia.[27] They married in 1966 or 1967 and moved with six-year-old Barack to Jakarta, Indonesia, just after the unrest surrounding the ascent of Suharto.[28] In Indonesia, Soetoro worked as a government relations consultant with the American petroleum company, Mobil.[29][30] On August 15, 1970, Soetoro and Dunham had a daughter, Maya Kassandra Soetoro

I appreciate that he might be trying to tell poor kids that he identifies with them, but I do think he distorted the facts or at least, ignored some of them. Of course, with the economy tanking, there are more kids out there today whose families are struggling than there were before. Plus, it's worth acknowledging that not all parents are single ones. His mother was single for a couple of years but after that she married and Obama has said nice things about his step-father, that he was a good guy.

I will never be convinced that his speech isn't intended to indoctrinate students to his socialist agenda. The whole thing is a wolf in sheep's clothing; it might appear harmless on the outside, but it's a whole different matter when you get right down to the nitty gritty. Besides, how do we know that what he says about his childhood is all true? It could be riddled with a bunch of half-truths and outright lies.
If I had a child, he or she would not be at school that day. That's all I have to say about it.

It looks like what I've said all along is true. It isn't the speach that's the problem, it's the follow on assignments.
How dare Obama be so pompous that he expects all students to come up with goals on how they can best support him!

If people were worried about what might be in the speech, it was because of the assignment guidelines for teachers that were released. They certainly seemed to be aimed at directing children's attention towards Obama. They haven't changed them sufficiently in my opinion, but they did respond and make one change.
I checked constantly for the release of the speech and it didn't show up until after noon EST on Monday. As soon as it was there, I posted the link. Now, I will watch the speech on CSPAN and follow along to ensure there are no deviations.

Well I just read it in its entirety out loud to my husband and daughter and I think it is a fine speach.. There is nothing alarming in any way in this speach and not only is the message a good one but it is sorely needed in this country right now.
I am so discusted that the people of this country are reacting the way they are to this speach...
We all know darn well if this was a middle aged white president giving this exact speach everyone would be praising it to the hilt....this has nothing to do with not wanting the president to speak to our kids and everything to do with it being Obama who is doing the speaking.
What a shame!

I understand exactly how you are feeling!!! Because honestly that is exactly how I felt the entire time Bush was in office...
I realize the Obama detractors and the Bush supporters dont get that...but honestly that is how we felt with all the wackos he surrounded himself with....

Will they still devote the entire school day to projects of adulation for the president and make the children write letters about "how I can help Obama", "what Obama wants me to do", and "How Obama inspires me"?
Because I think it is the accompanying lesson plan and indoctrination assignments that had people upset much more so than what was actually in the speech itself.

yeah that's what concerns me too... I don't recall these lesson plans being sent out when Reagan and Bush did their speeches. If they or any other president did this no matter left or right I would not allow my child to attend a day long event about a president that has not even proven himself as a leader.
My grandmother told me when she was growing up that her teachers praised FDR so she grew up thinking FDR was the greatest president ever... now she says after doing some research herself when she got older she knows he was not this great president... he prolonged the Depression. But when you are young you develop these hero worshiping that sometimes are difficult to look at without the rose covered glasses that were placed over their eyes at a young age. Already Obama has children singing songs about him. This is disturbing to me. The speech itself is the the problem... it's the hero worshiping that Obama so craves that worries me and how he is going after the young undeveloped minds that do not question his intentions and actions the same way an adult mind does.

I agree with that...I was ready to keep my daughter home that day as well for the mere principal that the white house has no business setting up cirriculum to pass out to teachers and creating a whole day around his speach....but most schools arent planning to do that part at least here....and i dont think my daughters school is even planning to show the speach....
But it really is a shame that so much controversy is being stirred up about this when the actually message it badly needed right now. Kids are just not interested in education any more and they need to have a fire lit under them.

Once again, having read the speech, what on earth was all the fuss about? I read all sorts of bizarre things about what this speeches intention was, and now I can see thats just people reading what they want to into it.
Its actually a great speech and I would be happy for my kids to hear it. All this fuss about keeping kids home, etc - what message does that send to your children if THEY read the speech? That you DON'T want your children to work hard for their country, and not quit on their education?
Maybe some of our kids WILL grow up to have a different outlook to us because they will see what a mess we've made of the alternative? Because they have seen everyone ranting at each other and believing lies about each other and think there must be a better way? I hope so. I hope they grow up with more sense than all the stupidity going on at the moment, on both sides.

To be fair, no one knew what the intention of the speech was before today, they knew only of the guidelines for teachers which set out all sorts of tasks related to how students could help Obama or how he has inspired them. We might not know even today what is in the speech, if there hadn't been a fuss about it.
The fuss is a direct result of Obama employing many people of questionable character and intent as advisers whose power and influence cannot be scrutinized. The fuss might also have been fueled by the extreme secrecy that this administration practices. The fuss, if you will, is a result of the fact that the American people do not trust their president.
That mistrust is not some huge character flaw or lack in the American people, it is an atmosphere for which only Obama is to blame.

So tell me again why there is such an up in arms reaction to the president wanting to give a speech to America's school children? I don't get it. It's just a very normal speech about wanting kids to stay in school and set goals for themselves so they can better themselves. I guess those that are all up in arms about this speech hate school and would prefer their kids to drop out and be losers the rest of their lives.

Well, let's not forget also that we didn't have the speech. I am not sure if we would have it even now if there hadn't been such an uproar. I will be watching it live myself tomorrow, to read along and make sure there aren't any changes.
The fact that the lesson plans were so centered on Obama and not having the text of the speech is what led to the suspicion and feelings of mistrust. Parents should be concerned about what their kids are hearing in school, that's their job.

hey Rollo1,
First and foremost, thanks for the link. I had wanted to hear his speech as there was lots of controversies related to it. Well, i am not an American, but despite that fact, i still sppreciate the deed that Obama is trying to do. He is trying to increase the literacy rate in America. I do not see anything wrong in it. I wonder why the parents had such a problem with it. Like you mentioned, the kids would probably snore through it.. LOL

What do you think of the follow on assignment that includes making goals on how to support Obama best?
