Doomsday 2012

If you have been watching the history channel lately, there is much ado about the upcoming galactic alignment due to occur in December 2012. Do you think this is another hoax (Y2K) or do you think there will some sort of occurrence in 2012? My boyfriend has theorized that the combined gravitational pulls from our sun and the center of our galaxy will either change our rotation (or our tilt) or even pull the earth from its current revolutionary path...eg further from the sun, either way creating massive climate changes. What are some of your theories?

I'm pretty anxious. Can't wait to see some change. Our plant is in the same routine for such a long time, it'll be cool to have some change. Hope it won't make us all go 'poof', of course.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! It is not so much that I believe that anything WILL happen, but it is fun to theorize about what MIGHT happen when the galactic alignment occurs. This one is not like Y2K in that they told you what would occur and then it didnt. It is the unknown that is intriguing. The reason they are making a big deal...or maybe the reason people are buying the hype, is so many different cultures predicted it. Mayans, Hopi, and yeah Nostradamus. So, I heard another good theory on this one, that actually makes sense and is based in fact. It is true that there is a supervolcano in Yellowstone that is due any time now to erupt. Some people think the combined gravitational pulls at the alignment will trigger the eruption. It is not a doomsday theory, but it will wreak havoc on the US, more so than even Katrina.

People have been preaching the end of the world since the beginning of time. I wonder why it is so easy for people to believe this stuff. Relax, there are forces greater than man that keep watch on things.

There are many doomsday theories that roam around for the past years and so far none had happened and were still here. Well for the coming 2012 theory there is only one way to prove it right and that is when the date has already arrive. But for now we are all alive so its better to do what is to be done and if that happens then we are all doomed anyway so what is the purpose of knowing if it happens or not anymore. For me what is more important is now. Enjoy life as it is and move on, we don't need to be afraid of the thing that has not yet arrived.

I've always wondered about this, but the other day I watched one of Penn & Teller's "Bullsh*t" shows that was about doomsday. It was the funniest thing I've ever seen! Basically, it shows a bunch of people that believe in doomsday and their theories, then it shows a bunch of people that don't believe in doomsday and tell their beliefs. The people that believe in doomsday actually seem kind of idiotic, and I think the show might be a bit biased, but it just shows that doomsday 2012 is a silly thing to believe in. Honestly, I think it's another hoax just like Y2K. There'll be a bunch of people waiting for the world to explode, and they'll be extremely frantic about it right up to the very second. And then, nothing will happen. Sorry, but I don't believe it.
