You could go to a craft store and buy some clear glass ornaments and let your kids decorate them with glitter and glue. You could also use any old puzzles you have and let the kids glue the pieces together into wreaths.

Polymer clay is good to shape what ever ornament you prefer. Make sure you leave a hole in the top to string a ribbon through it after you've baked it for the appropriate time.

We used to blow out the inside of eggs and paint them. Its a little too delicate for young kids but older ones enjoy it. Basically, you use a straight pin to poke a hole on either end then blow out the inside. After that, you just paint the outside.

I've gone to the craft stores and bought packages of the opaque glass ornaments, then used the acrylic paint to write someone's name on them for a gift and add a few holly leaves and berries or some kind of decoration. Another thing to do is buy the clear glass ornaments, take off the top, squeeze some acrylic paint in (2 or 3 colors is enough), then rotate the ornament and swirl the colors around. I even decorated our tree with only these one year. I've also used someone's favorite NFL team's colors and then given them a few of those ornaments to hang on their tree. You can also draw designs on the outside of the ornaments if you're good at that. It makes a nice inexpensive gift to give someone and it's something personal.

My kids have always loved making popcorn strings. Another thing they enjoy is making ornaments out of dough that you can bake and then paint. I have seen some really cute reindeer ornaments made out of candy canes, pipe cleaners and googly eyes.

colorful paper chains are great. just cut colored construction paper into strips lengthwise, some half inch and some inch wide for variety. make circles and put either a piece of tape to close it or staple it. make a chain.

Quilted Ball - Quilted Ball
One of my favorite with kids is to use styrafoam balls and let them cut small pieces of fabric out and "punch" the edges of the fabric into the styrafoam...produces a beautiful quilting effect and very nice ornaments.

How old are the kids? I find that the little "milk Jugs" from McDonald's also work for a snowman for the tree, less likely to break for little ones. Sorry, no pic's right now. One idea I want to try uses Fine point permanent markers on lids from frozen juice concentrate. Draw in colorful geometric patterns, outline in black. Color both sides. You can glue a plasic jewel in the center, as well. Poke a hole, hang with a ribbon or cord. Have fun. It is the process, not the product that is important.
