With the recent defeat of Argentina by the country's arch rival, Brazil, the chance of the country qualifying for the football world cup in South Africa is in jeopardy. What do you think of the chance of Argentina to make it to South Africa next year?
Brazil has already booked her place in the next year's world cup and I see the country taking the few qualifying games remaining seriously. Will this impact positively on Argentina? I equally see each country that Argentina will play against in the few remaining qualifying matches causing trouble for the country. Where will all these lead Diego Maradona and his boys?

Hi emmanola,
I believe Argentina still can qualify for the world cup final in South Africa. They are now stand at the 4th place in South America qualification. And that is the last position to get automatic qualification spot. They have 20 points and above them are Brazil (30 points), Chile (27 points) and Paraguay (27 points). While the team below them that have any chance to qualify are Colombia (20 points), Ecuador (20 points), Uruguay (18 points) and Venezuela (18 points).
While there are only three games left to played, Argentina will face Paraguay (Sept 9 - away), Peru (Oct 10 - home) and Uruguay (Oct 13 -away). They might have problem with the Paraguay game but for the other two, they should win it. Both team have nothing to play when Argentine play with them.
Colombia will have to face Uruguay (away), Chile (home) and Paraguay (away). While Ecuador will meet Bolivia (away), Uruguay (home) and Chile (away). Both still have stiff task to qualify especially the both have to face Chile. And they can't drop any point any more.
Argentina also have an upper hand on the goal difference. They have +2 while Colombia (-2) and Ecuador (-4). So, Argentina still can qualify if they draw in one game. (Assuming there is no big different goals scored).
The 5th place in this South America qualifying also have a chance to play a play-off games against Concacaf 4th place team.
It is good to see others team to qualify though. Since I am not an Argentina fan.

I am really happy seeing that Paraguay is set well in the race for the 2010 World Cup. I really wanted them to win in '98 when they lost against France in the quarter-finals, by Laurent Blanc's "Golden goal". They had a very good team back then, led by the unforgettable Jose Luis Chilavert!
As for Argentina, I think they have the best schedule among the 3 teams battling for the 4th and 5th places (alongside Colombia and Ecuador), just as akuler said here.
The 5th place is also an option, although nobody can tell which team they will play - the fight it tight in the CONCACAF group, Honduras, Costa Rica, Mexico and the USA are separated by 1 point. Mexico and even the USA can be a tough team to play against if they have a good day and Argentina a bad one...

Argentina is in a precarious position and I am not so optimistic of the country's qualification. It's easy to assume that "only" Paraguay is a tough team Argentina will meet in the qualifiers. One should, however, not write off Peru and Uruguay. As far as as I'm concerned, none of those teams is going to be an easy ride for the Argentines. Even the teams that cannot make it to South Africa 2010 will play for pride.

Yesterday Paraguay defeated Argentina by a lone goal. There are only two qualifying matcbes left for Argentina to play. The country has slipped from fourth position to fifth position. The teams in the first four position will automatically qualify for the South Africa 2010 world cup; the team that comes fifth only have the "luxury" of play off match.

Definitely Argentina will qualify for South Africa 2010 if they play the remaining 2 matches seriously. But they may not go too far in the world cup knockout. I have to say Maradona is a great football player but not a great coach (He doesn't have to be). Argentina is now declining from the top of the world and needs a new coach to lead them in 2010.
