I assume you are beginner, i make it easy for you to follow, since your windows are not working, ready you windows xp installer.
1. Power on your pc, while the computer are starting up, press del key continously (the setup key are different on some brand, refer to your manual)
2. On the setup menu find the option for booting, make sure that the first bootable device are CD \ DVD. Save it, insert you windows xp installer.
3. Wait for the "press any key to boot from CD" then follow the instruction on the setup procedure, it will prompt you to select the drive to be use on installation, select the drive where you want your xp to be installed, eg. C:\, D:\, then it will ask you if you want to format the partition/drive, there are choices, you can format it quick or the conventional one.
The rest is easy, I usually repartition my drive before i reformat it, just to make sure. Just remember to save your important file before doing so. If you can't access it, remove the drive and do it on another computer, if that's not an option, you can create a bootable CD of windows xp, I use UBCD.
good luck

I think, if you could elaborate your question/problem more... then I'm pretty sure that you'd get lots of great responses in here... If you a single hdd only & have not partitioned it, I suggest doing a System Repair so that all your files remain intact & undeleted... it's like installing your OS. But instead of reformatting your drive to do a fresh install. You just need to 'Press' the 'R' button or the 'Repair' button then you're good again.

hi 786pankaj, do you mean format hard disk drive or format your windows XP? if you want to format windows xp, just inserts your xp bootable disk and restart the windows, then go to bios setting, choose the first boot priority as cd room, you can reinstall your windows by that way, it cleans all of the problem from the previous operating system. however, if you want to format your HD, you can do the same thing, but you need to back up all data you have before doing that, you can do this in windows installation and delete all the partition that you made. i hope my explanation may help you, good luck...

Well, if you don't care for the data that's on the hard drive (or at least the Windows partition if you have such), all you need to worry with is re-installing XP. In the process of the XP setup, you'll come across a section that asks you where do you want to install Windows. When you try to install there it'll ask you if you want to format the partition, which will solve your problem instantly.
