What it takes is patience, a good command of the language and an interesting use of the language, an understanding of rhythm and a good deal more. Most poems that people write are very low level: they don't use language with any interest, and they lack any sense of rhythm. The best way to learn how to write poems is to read every poem you can lay your hands on, old poems, new poems, difficult poems, children's poems - everything. Only when you get to feel how other poets work will you have some idea how to write well yourself. And practice all the time. Don't be satisfied with secondrate stuff. http://www.geocities.com/mfcrowl/poetry/own/owndex.html

Heart,Mind, and Soul. Heart for the inspiration, mind for the aesthetic value of the poem. It just can not be one without the other, because poems are reflections of our soul.

I think a very happy moment and very sad moment drive you to write poems. When you are in love for the first time you will feel like writing more poems. When you lose your precious things in life again you may feel like recording your feelings through a poem. Our kannadhasan wrote many matchless poems when he was experiencing these moods.

I think first you need good knowledge of the language you are going to be writting in and then you need time and practice. Writing is an art and must be practiced often to be accomplished. Inspiration is also vry important in writting poetry or fiction and non-fiction. If you lack any of these then check in your area for a writters groo=up. If you are in the USA the chamber of Commerce will know if there is a group or your local library. Keep writting no matter what and thing will come to pass that you will never expect.

I think that an important factor in writing poems is having raw emotions to draw from. If you're furious, depressed, in love, or just plain confused then use that emotion. Something else that is helpful is to edit your poetry. It usually doesn't come out as fluent as you would like the first time around. Go back several times and see what you can do to improve your work.
