I've just become unemployed for the first time in 25 years. The last time I was unemployed I was living in Northern England with family (parents and siblings), I was single and in my early twenties. THIS time around my life is very different. I'm living in the US, married with three dependent sons of teen age or older, a big mortgage, and majority of our extended family are back in England. I'm looking for tips and advice on a survival strategy in case this lasts longer than I want it to. Thoughts?

Get over it. Keep moving, like: make friends as much as possible, visiting friends, joined the organization, etc.. At night you can be active in internet marketing.
I have a year of unemployment. I'm back to playing music, writing songs, and healing by using energy therapy.

All sound advice - thanks hsofyan. I like the idea of having more freedom to pursue creative stuff. I have a tonne of friends already and will keep looking for more - that's good advice. For exaple I'm on linkedin and have over 600 direct connections and have nearly 200 friends on facebook. Great advice.

That sucks when your unemployed and I understand how you feel as I've been there.. but you could try to apply for work at home jobs. I believe the best one is oDesk and GoFreelancer. Basically you just load up your profile and bid for jobs that are available that you are skilled to do. If you are good at typing you want to try quicktate, Idictate, Working Solutions group. These are are all companies that hire work from home workers and they don't charge you anything. Do a thorough search on the net on working from home. They are loads of work at home opportunities especially if you reside in the US.
I do hope this will end for you soon as there's nothing glorious about being unemployed. Welcome to my lot by the way
