mylotters, this is an issue that i ponder whilst living in one of the obesity capitals of the world. there are a lot of obese and fat people in america and north america. i mean hordes of them all over the place. here is what gets me: surely prior to one reaching an even moderately obese stage there are warnings. i mean i know that there is allegedly a fat gene out there, but even so there must be warning signs that tell you that you are heading down a bad path, signs that tell one that they need to see a doctor to keep it in check and get it under control. now what would make someone ignore these signs, then on top of that, they get one of those mobility chairs, to further limit any more exercise, what is up with that. surely logic dictates that if you are getting fatter you need more exercise and getting a mobility chair will not give you that exercise! then on top of that, these same people pump their bodies full of fast food! what is up with that, what is worse is they are teaching their children poor eating habits so that their kids in turn are obese too, thereby shortening their life span. can someone please explain this insanity to me, then these same people want to apply for disability, thereby taking the funds from someone who is actually more in need than they are. i do not get this and it makes me so mad. somethig has to be done, is there not enough education in the schools or for the parents?

Hi Hatley....I just pointed this fact out in my response that medications can often be the culprit in significant weight gain...people who need these medications can't stop them, so have to contend with the weight gain.

i did make the distinction that there are some out there who have a medical condition. if you read what i said i am talking about those who do not fall under that particular umbrella, i am talking about those who have no such medical condition that prevents them from shedding the weight regardless of what they do. so re-read what i wrote and if you still feel like i have offended you then fair enough i will apologize to you and mean it. i used to be a person who had a medical condition due to the thyroid and some meds i was taking, but that is behind me now, so i do understand, i may not have been obese but i could feel my pounds stacking on.

Its the food they eat, for Christ's sake ! Fast food is the most popular thing these days and it makes people foundation stones for fat and disease. In Trinidad you get hordes of women with huge bottoms and thighs. That's all the endless vegetables they grow up on. Eat properly and exercise and this would not happen.

ha ha you get a lot of big bottomed women back home too. obesity there is a cultural thing. in africa and those parts, their standards of beaiuty are well different. fatness is a sign of wealth and prosperity.

It is not surprising that America produces a lot of obese people in the world. This is the birthplace of a chain of fastfood franchise like the kentucky fried chicken, Mcdonalds, Drunkin Doughnuts...and a host loads of other fastfood stores. The fastfoods not only are loaded with high fats but encourages people to be lazy as they can depend on these foods to replace the home cooked foods which many think are labor saving and go for fastfoods for only few dollars. Their kitchen become smokeless as fastfoods has become more regular in their diets without realizing that they have ended up becoming humpty dumpty.

i know, and it is amazing that for a nation that wants to solve the problem, they still sell the fast food real cheap. however essentials like fruits and vegetables are so expensive, it is hard to eat healthy. i have found vegetable sushi to be the nice cheap option.

I do and don't agree necessarily with some of your ideas here...yes, there is that "fat" gene and often many times obesity is a hereditary issue. Also, for the most part many people, especially children don't eat as well as our ancestors did and instead of eating really nutritious healthy foods, reach for the fatty foods, junk foods and fast foods..in fact the sad fact is, is that children are more obese now than in any other time...Also, if the parents of these children have lousy eating habits, how can the kids fair any better? There's one aspect one often forgets about that can cause weight gain. Medications. A good vast majority of medications can make a person gain weight and no fault of their own--since a person taking these medications obviously need them they have to contend with the weight gain since they obviously can't stop taking them...one such group of medications that trigger weight gain are the anti-depressants...and LOL...gee, if I were taking them (I don't) and started to gain weight, I think that would make me more depressed. In general, losing weight isn't easy...all my life I've been a relative "beanpole"--that is thin, but there were a few occasions that yes, I started packing the pounds on...and OMG--it's so much easier to gain weight than lose it.

i must agree there, since the little weight gain that i experienced since the time of my meds, it has been a few years now and i am still fighting the bulge fight and not it is not easy, especially the older that you get.i sympathize with those that are fighting that fight, and yeah sometimes it is hard even with the diet, but i am making some headway there.

ok i know i'm small compare to some big people. but some larger people are better friends. i've got weight issues, and it was partly from contraceptive in my arm. the weight snuck up on me, i've not lost much but have lost centimeters from walking and using a few bits of equipment. i'm feeling better from it and more toned, so i'm happier being muscle than fat. one of my friends is large, doesn't do much excercise. but since starting work and being on her feet she is actually toning up, i'd not seen her in at least a month when i saw her the other night and you could see the difference. fast food doesn't agree with many, it's treat in our house. i have to send my son to school each day with a piece of fresh fruit, for a morning tea thing they do. some schools push healthy eating while others don't.

omg i have one of those implants, i got lucky that it did not affect my weight. i do agree, i used to have a friend who had a weight problem and she was pretty nice, i tried to help her she the pounds for her self esteem, but it did not take. she lacked the discipline to carry it on. yeah the weight does sneak up, try eating vegetable sushi regualarly. it is so good for you especially with brown rice.

obesity is not just a proble experienced in america , in our country too,and i think obesity is also common in all countries in the world, there are so many people face the same problem especially the women and house wife, I think people will not experience or problematic with obesity if everyone is able to control their eating pattenrs/manners :)

hmmm it is hard if it is purely genetic, but some people use that as an excuse not to try to lose the weight, they just give up. it is important to get out there and do some level of exercise even if it is just walking around or some sort of dance class or something.
