Do you wash and dry all your material before you make something out of it?

Right now I am starting a sewing project...that is right after my material gets dried. I always wash and dry my material so I get the shrink out of it before I make it into something....I have seen people buy appliqued sweatshirts that the design has puckered because the fabric was not wash and dried. So do you wash and dry all your material?

It would be difficult for me to wash the yarn I use since it comes in big skeins. I do buy plastic canvas in packages instead of the individual sheets. These sheets haven't been handled and sometimes they are cheaper. Good luck with the sewing. I did a sewing project in high school. It was a skirt that was sewn together on all sides up and down. No way to wear it..lol This tells you of my wonderful sewing skills! What are you making?

Great. Would love to see the finished project. You have amazing craft ideas. How did the stain glass turn out?

Basket liners.....I am going to sell a basket with three or four holiday liners with it.....and I am having so much fun! It's been too long since I have done any sewing so I am totally enjoying it....I'll post a picture and discussion when I am done with them!

my mom used to do that when she sewed. she was a seamstress and used to make clothing for people in the 60's and 70's (when it was cheaper to make clothes than buy it). i think this is a good idea to do for sure.

My mother sewed for years and years. She always washed her fabric and ironed it before she sewed it into anything. She did this for cottons or poly-cottons. Sometimes the yardage shrunk and sometimes it didn't but she always washed it first. My mother is 82 years old but in her time most fabric was 100% cotton and would shrink if you didn't do that; and also to see if the fabric's color or dye would bleed out too. Also, she said that sometimes there were rats in the textiles and they would sometimes urinate or defecate on the materials and so it was a good idea to wash it first for that reason too. Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

My Mom always did. She would wash and iron it. Or I would iron it as that was the only thing I did like to do. I didn't like sewing. So I would iron it. You have a good day. Your friend onlydia

Thanks for bring up this topic, Im new to sewing clothes and this is something Ive been going over and over in my mind like do I--or don't I. Im happy to say I'd rather err on the side of caution with everyones useful advice, though when I get so excited about a pattern ITS SO HARD to wait, lol
