There are many people who breath through their mouth more than they breath through their nose. It's common among many to sleep with an Open mouth! Mouth breathing sometimes will be of no concern but only breathing through mouth will cause some problems. It affects the dentofacial structure. The teeth and the Gingiva(upper gums) are affected and the same time they will have some speech problem. There are different causes of mouth breathing. In some is the cause is obstructive that is they start breathing through mouth because there is some obstruction in the nasal passage like enlarged adenoids, deviated nasal septum. Some times even after the removal of obstruction child keeps on breathing through mouth then that habit becomes habitual. The mouth breathing habit if persists affects the dento facial structures. These are effects on the facial form & it is seen that the children who breathe through mouth due to the hypertrophied lymphoid tissue show more vertical growth. They have long faces and sometimes it is called as Adenoid faces. There faces have typical long and narrow appearance with narrow nose and nasal passage. Affect on the teeth and the arches mouth breathers they keep the mouth open so the flaring of the upper teeth is seen. We can see the open bite that means the upper front teeth do not cover the lower front teeth. People who breathes through mouth so the tongue is positioned downwards to make the airways. This causes the imbalance in the forces and the narrow maxillary arch causing the posterior cross bite. Effect on speech in mouth breathers’ speech can also be affected if the cause of nasal obstruction is not removed. The mouth breathers have the nasal accent. Other effects the mouth breathers have the expressionless face. The activities of the muscles differ in the mouth breathers and the nose breathers. Mouth breather have the frequent attacks of ear infection also. These problems may happens with continuous mouth breathing. So do you Breathe through your nose or mouth?

Hi Taz, Content of your discussion is too much biological. So it is very hard to understand for a techincal person like me.Most of the time i use my nose for breathing in or out but when my nose get stuck and dont have any solution to open it; i have to breath using mouth. Yes, it is not good to breath in or out using mouth but in emergency we can use it. God has provided that facility for emergeny purpose. It is emergency solution when your nose get stuck. So use it in emergency. have a nice night. happy mylotting!!

Hi taztheone - that is a lot of information! thanks. Well, most of the time it is nose of course. I dont know if I do mouth breathing when I am asleep because nobody has told me that. I hope I dont. My father occassionally snores. But he doesnt have problems in speech. And he does not have ear infection. I do. Oops expressionless face. My joy, sorrow, anger, all are so obvious. Hey, but expressionless face is regarded as an asset isn't it? I mean they can be really good poker players, and the coolest ones. :)

It seems you have done a research in the above topic. Thanks for sharing the information. My mon used to say that the level of teeth will go up if we breath using mouth while sleeping. I breath using mouth only when I have difficulty in breathing thorugh nose. I mean the time of cold or fever when my nose gets blocked.

well, i always breathe through my nose, but sometimes when my nose is stuck and i have no other option left, then yes i do, breathe with my mouth as well. i heard from a doctor that you should not breathe from your mouth because nose stops all the germs that come with the breathe but mouth can't stop any germs or any thing that you breathe in.
