Why do you quit your last job? It is asked so often.
I just quit my job because of low salary. In my recent interviews, I am asked so many times about this question. Frankly, I reaaly don't know how to answer this question. I don't know what kind of answers can satisfy interviewers. If I give the real reason - low salary, maybe they will get an impression that I will quit again if I find another job with higer salary.
So if you were me, how would you answer this question - why do you quit your last job? In your past interviews, were you asked this question often? And how did you answer this question?

My own boss has had people interviewing for a job answer with that and he has told me pretty much what you said. He said it kind of makes him wonder about how long it will be before they up and move on to something better. I don't know what you would say instead as I've been at the same job for over 15 years. I off and on do look about for another job and while it is partly because I want more money and mostly because I want different hours. I guess I would probably say that I was looking for a change.

Over 15 years? I cannot totally imagine that one would do the same job in the same company for over 15 years. It is unbearable for me to stay in the same company so long.

I quit my job because the people I was working for ran out of money. They paid me every week and then suddenly they had no money. No $; no work. I had to wait 2 1/2 weeks for the money I had earned for the last week I worked there. They owe someone else a thousand dollars and now have paid only $280. So glad I got out when I did. Still looking for a good amount of work.

Yes, you did the right thing to quit your job. That kind of person you once worked for didn't deserve your effort. Hope you to find a satisfying job in short time.

I did not quit my last job...it quit me!!! One of the managers did not like me and worked for about 2 years to get rid of me. When my manager went on maternity leave he got his chance. I was very concerned on how to answer the question that you have stated and was given very good advice on how to answer it. I was told to tell the interviewer when asked that I left because my job was no longer a good fit to my career goals. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your kind response. It is very useful to take mylotters' advice. After the interviews these days, I found that some large companies don't focus on the reason why I quit my last job. They focus on personal ability. So I refused some offers from some small companies. I am waiting my opportunity to work for a humanized company. The day will come soon, I believe.

Honestly speaking quiting a job is because of the reason to get high salary that no one can oppose. But while facing a interview we cant tell this reason so that they get bad impression as you said.

To leave a bad impression is what I am concerned. And that is also the reason I am angry. Many people, maybe including interviewers, quit the job because of low salary, but they cannot tell the truth in the interview.

i quitted my last job two years ago,i like the last job and learned much from the job.
but i didn't like that city,i wish to live in a city where is peaceful and beautiful.
at last,i moved into the city i have been living for two years, ths city is near to sea,i love the sea view so much and it attacted me to work in this city.
so when the interviewers asked me the question why did you quit your last job,i answered as above mentioned, most of the interviewers accepted this anwere and including my new boss.

Actually I am considering to leave this city, because I don't like this city. Last year, I came here, just because my sister was in this city, too. Now she has left this city. Maybe it is time to go to a city I like. If I go to another city, I think your answer is a very good one. :)

I had quit my last job three years ago. It came to a point that I didn't anymore enjoying the job, I felt I won't grow if I had to continue my life with that job. During my interview for my second job which I have now, I was asked about why I quit the first job. I just answered the interviewer that it just a matter of finding my real passion to work. I said that I am looking for personal growth which I had not found in my first job.

I think to find real passion to work and look for personal growth are very good answers. I will keep in mind in the next interview.

My reason was for more of the loosing hours part. I also got paid min wage. i have experience in retail for 7 yrs. i started there and worked 3-7 hours a week then a manager went on maternity leave so i was working average of 16 hrs a week. after 12 weeks she came back so i quit b/c its not worth working 3 hrs a week

I quit my previous job because the employer didn't pay me well but made me work so hard to the extent that I worked for 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. When I complained to the company, they said that I should not demand to shorten the hours of my work because it was in my contract that I had to reach my quota. I felt really exploited, so I quit.

I think you are luckier than me. When I did the first job, I worked 11 to 12 hours a day, and SIX days a week, with low salary. One more day than your work days. When I quit it, that company arranged another job for me. Then I needn't work overtime any more and I was paid better. But I think the salary was still low. So I quit. I think it is time to look for a more suitable job with high salary.

Hi felicityjiang. Salary is one of the reasons why people quit their job. I have had that same reason before. But there was also one thing that made me leave my job and it was my co - workers. It was hard to continue working if you are not in good relations with someone. I know that people might think that it is inevitable the people do not usually agree together all the time. But I will reach that level when I find it intolerable.

I will be resigning this coming October, my reasons are: my relationship with my boss is not healthy anymore and she's always mad at me, the second one is my salary, and the third reason is i dont have a career growth and intelectual growth. i want a more challenging job. If I undergo interviews again, I will say i do quit my job because i want my career to grow and also me i want to grow as a professional and I know that this company can help me.

Yeah, you'd better not say the first and second reasons to interviewers. At least in my country it will give a bad impression to the interviewers. The third reason is a good one.

I have experience about that. I agree with you, if I answer "because in last job is low salary", I am sure they will not accept me in the new job. I try this answer one time and I do not accept in that job.
So, in the next interview, I answer like that "I quit from last job because my carrer not optimal in my last job. That are a lot of new boss in my last job, so that is very difficult to make career in there. So, I get decision to find new different job to make different situation to make more good career. "
And than I accept in new job.

I just wonder how many people quit job because of low salary. Why cannot the interviewers accept the real reason? Why are we forced to find out some other reasons? If a human-based company gives more consideration to its employees and provides good welfare, I think this company need not be concerned that its employees quit the job.

Maybe the main problem of quit your job is low salary. When you did your next interview you felt puzzled about this. As a matter of fact , many guys left their job because of low salary. But if you love your job even with low salary, you won't quit your job. At the next interview, you can say you felt not comfortable about the last company's environment or there is litter chance to promote.
In my opinion, supportting family is the first task, so everyone should find a job with a proper salary to support their family. And then company's environment should be concerned. Find a job you love and you will live a happy life.

Of course I want to look for a job I love. But the salary is also important element that I need consider. As for the job I love, there are two directions for my future job - to be a translator or to be a saleswoman. I have not decided which to choose.

I quit my last job because I wanted to spend more time with my kids at home. Working and taking care of my toddler and older son was not working out. We were all stressed out all the time. So, I quit. And if a prospective employer asks, I will say the same.

I am quiting my job this Friday and I will be soon in your place to reply to interviewers who will ask me why I quit my job though the reason will be like yours well low salary but I cannot say that as they will think I am too much so I will say that I want to have much experience and working with your company will definitely be a great experience for me. And I was looking forward to come to you first but there was no vacancy.

But now many companies ask for job experiences when they recruit employees. If I say I want to have much experience, maybe they will doubt I will also quit again when I have enough experience. They will also think we need an experienced person, not an experience-learning person. And an more experienced person seems to save the training cost for them. In several interviews, I was really angry about their reaction after hearing my answer.

I quit my last job because I hated it. It was an incredibly stressful job. While I still made a reasonable amount of money, I just could no longer stand it any more. I haven't had to answer this question in interviews because I've never gone into a related field. I've assumed that all of the jobs doing the same thing would be just as bad. If I were asked why I quit I'd tell them the truth, but try to make it seem like it was just the other job that was making it awful.

My last job is also a stressful job. But I love it. And it is very challenging. If I was paid higher and the company offered good welfares, I really don't want to quit job. You went into another field and you told the truth. I think that reason was acceptable. But I want to go into the same field. The reason that I quit the job is really a headache. Anyway, thanks for your response.

It was all a matter of priority: I wanted to pursue grad studies and it just so happened that my previous company didn't allow it. To make a long story short, I resigned and I've never been happier.

i have had several jobs and each time i leave one, it is always for greener pasture and i inform the prospective employer about that. it is only the job immediately preceding the present one i have that i left because of early retirement.
i voluntarily applied for early retirement because of the very good offer.
now, i am back to one gainful employment.
