... and the discussions themselves!
Many of us seem to keep in contact fine within the discussions

I agree. The discussions, which is at the forefront in all features offered at mylot, offer a lot of interactivity. Therefore, it defeats the purpose of this site. plus, it is difficult for the admin to regulate the conversations or discussions to go on around the site, so it is best to stick with the discussions.

A chat room is a great idea - but I don't think we should be paid for it (anyhow, I don't see how it could be moderated to make that possible)
Chat rooms are full enough of mindless drivel as it is - let's not encourage it further!

My dear, the things I could tell you ...
Well, I used to get a Pimms and soda out of it, anyway. Sometimes.

But in the end I packed in the barmaid job and went somewhere that paid better ...

While it sounds to be a useful idea, I don't think that MyLot have any plans to implement it at the moment (I could be wrong, however). As with Private Messaging, if it were implemented, I certainly don't think that using it would earn us money from MyLot (though, of course, it might be used to swap referral links but that's another story).
If you want to chat with people whilst on MyLot, there are sites such as Meebo which allow you to chat between multiple Messengers. Meebo has the advantage that it's web-based, doesn't require any downloads or installation and you can set up groups or rooms. If you don't know it, you can find it here: http://www.meebo.com/meebo/

Personally I don't think Mylot would ever implement something like a chat area. They are here to make money and they do that by having us create discussions and replies that are indexable in the search engines so they get more traffic and in that way earn more money.
I don't think that they can index chat conversations as they should be private.
