An ordeal that was just a little strange...to me anyway!

Last Sunday my neighbor was having a rummage sale.....I looked outside and scanned what she had on the yard and one thing piqued my interest. I looked across the street several times before I actually walked over and looked the item over good. It was one of those seamstress forms where you can fit what you are sewing to mold it to a certain size. When I first looked at it I thought.....wow that would be good for me to display my scarves at a craft sale....and when I found out it came apart and I could set the body on a table I snapped it up at a great price. About 8 p.m. that night the doorbell rang....a guy was standing outside my door and wanted to know if I was the one that had bought the seamstress form....I said yes. He said well I'll give you twice what you paid for it. I said no. He said well I was supposed to get it this morning for my wife but forgot....so how about you sell it to me. I said well I bought it to use myself. He says....but my wife sews....and I said but I want to use it for my craft sales....He say but my wife really wants it.....and I said.....so do I! He finally left. Would you ever hunt up someone to see if you could buy something from them that you had missed the opportunity to buy? I mean my daughter said it doesn't hurt to ask but I thought it was strange. It wouldn't be something I would do....how about you? Oh I found out that they are very expensive normally so I really did get a deal!

That's pretty freaky. Or at least it would freak me out a bit. Living alone, he'd be lucky if I even answered the door! But I think it is a bit over the top to be so insistent. I think a lot of guys feel they can talk a woman into a lot of things they don't want to do. And I'm speaking of non physical things here people.

That's sort of funny. When going to a garage sale you run the risk of someone else finding the item before you do, so that guy should have realized that. I'm a bit confused as to how he was supposed to buy it earlier that day, how did he know it was there? Why couldn't he have asked those people to hold it for him? Anyways, sounds a bit rude to show up at your door practically demanding you sell it to him! Also rude of your neighbors to tell him precisely who bought it!

Truthfully I think they were waiting to see if they could get it cheaper....it's not an item most people would want....and I am also wondering about him and his supposed wife....I am thinking they knew how much it was worth in the beginning and planned on scoring with a resale....but that's just my theory.

Yes I hear that happens a lot, and I suppose it's highly possible. Still doesn't explain why on earth he'd attempt to buy it off you though!

Wow, I think that would have freaked me out. Especially as late as he came over to your house to do so. Seems like he missed his opportunity and probably got chewed out by his wife. She probably sent him out to go see if he could still get it.That or he was hoping it would not sale at the yard sale and he could pick up real cheap afterwards. Personally I would never hunt someone up after I missed a sale. I would realize I screwed up and would make sure I did not next time.

ya know something like this KIND of happened to me.. i found a large care bear marked 25 cents at a yard sale in great condition and i was looking and saw smaller ones for more in a different area and the mother came by and said if things were priced funny its because she let her little girl do it.. well seeing an awesome deal i went to buy it and the sister to the girl that owned the care bear started crying saying she had paid 30 bucks for it and then her mom was like "is it ok that i sell it?" and it pissed me off because not only did she put it in the yard sale now she was mad at her sister and was taking it out on me and making me feel guilty! i wasnt gonna offer to pay more because before that the mom had said that she knew things were priced funny but oh well and so here i am trying to buy it and her daughter is crying and throwing a fit.. needless to say i got to buy it but felt like crap the whole day. but its not my fault! dont let a little girl price things!

Not these day's you would think. But he has to live with his wife. That poor man. I do feel bad for him that is why he tracked you down. But your neighbor told him where is was at. I mean really how rude she should of walked over or called you first. I bet he listens next time. Do you think he went a bought her a new one so he wouldn't get yelled at?

I don't think it's that bad that he came round to your house, as long as he remained friendly of course. It sounds like he was being a bit too pushy though. Like you said, they are usually expensive so I bet his wife was annoyed at him for not getting it in the morning, so he was probably trying to save his own bacon!

Those forms are very expensive here and good for you you kept it. If the guy wanted it for his wife he had the same chance as you did. Personally I think he has more balls than a bowling alley, no way I would have knocked on your door to try to deal you out of it, and I think your neighbour is a loose cannon also for telling this dude who bought it. Just my opinion of course.

Wow...talk about desperate! I guess he really screwed up not grabbing it when he saw it. If it was really something you wanted then I wouldn't have given it to him either. There's a lot of bargains that ppl miss out on b/c they don't grab them while they can.

Well everyone's already asked you the question I was wondering. Why would your neighbor tell him where you lived? How strange is that? I would never in a million years do that to anyone just for safety sake, come on!
Are people so clueless as to what goes on in this world and think that no harm can come to them or anybody? Geesh. And I also think it's very creepy coming over at that time to see if you want to give it up, what a goober. Like you mentioned, he probably wanted a better deal thinking no one would want it and she'd come down more on the price. How did he know it was there so early? Did he see it the night before? I'm curious.

The lady I bought it from is kinda strange...very different....nice but different....and I don't know why she told him....she is pretty clueless....I dont' understand his whole reasoning either....I think he thought maybe it was a different kind of item not alot of people would want.....I still think he waited thinking that he could get it cheaper.....but then again she had the sale closed up by 5...why come at 8?

Still really creepy to me.
I have an idea...I think you should dress the form up in some old scary Halloween clothes and stick it in your living room window at night looking straight out, haha. You can always stick an old doll head on it so the body is big and the head is small, lol!!! Tease her hair all over the place and make her look like the Bride of Chucky. Can you picture this, Hah!? That'll keep all the weirdo's away.

If I really wanted it, I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask. There'd be a limit to how far I'd go though.

well i bet his wife gave him whats for!! in a very bad way. its wonderful the bargains you get at yard sales at times and it really hurts when you are selling because theres no way you get what something is worth or even nearly what its worth.

This guy was in deep trouble with his wife because he promisd to get it early that morning. He was trying to escape her wrath and make his promise good. No harm in asking.

Hi jillhill, I wouldn't do what he did as she should just have accepted that someone got a bargain before him and if his wife knew it was for sale why didn't she just telephone about it and reserve it for herself.
But the reason I'm answering is because of these other responses about not feeling easy about opening your door at night. That's a stressful way to live. My house is in a quite isolated postion especially in the winter when the neigbours aren't around at all and I don't encourage people just turning up but if someone does I'd never be afraid to open my door as the place is so safe.

I don't think I would hunt anyone down for something. Well, it would have to be soimething really, really different that I would want that you could not get anywhere else. He probably came because his wife is going to kill him cause he waited and she probably ask him to get it right away. I noticed guys have a habit of doing stuff like that.
I have always wanted one of those dress forms. That is such a find at a yard sale. They are normally expensive, but I have noticed Joann's having them on sale off and on for $99 (normally $300.) When I get money I hope to catch one of their sales. Actually I went to joanns.com today and they have Singer brand forms on sale now, but I don't have the money now.
How lucky you were to find one at nonetheless a yard sale, but your neighbors. I hope it brings you lots of fun times with your crafts!

That was strange and he even show up to buy something. That's creepy! I wouldn't hunt down something that others already buy it. I had my chance to buy it and I missed it. It's my lost. Don't expect others to show mercy on me especially if it's something that you can get for more expensive price at the store. I think he asked about you from your neighbour and end up asking about it at your door. I also wouldn't sell it if it were me.

It would have really shook me up if that happened to me. I would never have had the nerve to go to someone's house. The fact that he came there at 8 p.m. shows that he has no regard for anyone else except himself and maybe his family. I am sometimes amazed at the lengths some people will go to to acquire thimngs.
