Do you know yourself ??

We claim to have known such and such people inside out and we blow our horn quite loudly though. But have you ever known yourself? Most of us would say in affirmative but the reality is that we have not known ourselves, forget about fully not even a quarter. But ironically we have been presuming that we know ourselves. This is an illusion.
What is your take on this. Please be frank.

Disclaimer: These days, I'm highly into philosophy. So please do not yawn while reading my 'sagacious' response.
Cannibal Baba says:
Actually, this world is far from reality. It is a mere illusion, 'Maya'. It's we individual souls who have diverted from the truth. Truth comes to the one who's enlightened. Take any enlightened person, like say a Buddha or a Krishna. An enlightened person knows every single aspect of not only himself, but the whole world around him. S/He can literally see the ripples created by her/his thoughts. Such people know exactly what their body requires, what their mind has got in it, what people around them.
However, none of us here is enlightened, isn't it? So it is utterly true that none of us knows exactly how our minds would respond to a given situation. That includes Cannibal Baba too. And we all know that everything we do or perceive is the game of our own individual minds. We're all miles away from enlightenment.
The bottomline is whatever people say here, the fact would remain that no one knows oneself completely.
Did you yawn? If you did, get ready for a curse!

Hi cannibal baba,
No yawning, I rather got enlightened but do not know how much. Just one clarification baba - that I say Know myself - my merits and demerits and my liking and disliking, that what I am pleased with and what not, that I am an individual different from others, that I know this subject or that better than others - are not these knowing oneself.
This is too equally true that I can not attain the enlightenment to know myself and matters around me. Then what is this I and me and mine?

Cannibal Baba blesses Rajib. (Baba is waiting for Dakshina)
According to the theoretician Cannibal Baba, Rajib seems to be on the right track. Baba believes in reincarnation and it seems certain that Rajib, with every new life is inching towards enlightenment. At this moment you feel all is wrt you, i.e. I, me, myself. While approaching towards enlightenment, Rajib shall surely understand that the only reality is the Absolute Consciousness or Brahman. Everything originates from the single source. Everything else is a manifestation of it, and ironically those manifestations is illusive too! This philosophy is called Advaita or Monism.
Baba only suggests Rajib to live life to the fullest and to try level best to not leave back any unfulfilled desires.
(Baba has borrowed everything from others' transcendental experiences. Baba does not owe any responsibility for any damage caused thereof!)

I have to admit that I don't know myself. I often feel confused about myself. I don't know what kind of life is suitable for me. Or what kind of jobs are suitable for me. I often hope someone else knows me and then she or he can tell me about myself and guide the direction for me. Unfortunately, I haven't meet this person.

Hi there,
I can see you are in a maze and thus confused. Do not bother. Just be content that you are who you are and you know your desires, interest and other things as human being.
I too am looking for such person who could lead me through.

As CannibalBaba Has Rightly Said We Live In A World Of Illusion Or Maya .. Our Actions Are Controlled By An Unknown Power, Though We Might Be Responsible for Our Actions 30% .. It is Not Us Completely .. We Think We Can Do Amazing things, It is What We Are Programmed To Do, Not us Really Doing Anything By ourselves .. I Hope I Am Clear ..

Hi,
Thee is logic what cannibal baba has said and now there is the theory of determinism which says all things are predestined and set to move in a particular motion in a specific moment.
Your conclusion is tat we do not know ourselves completely.

i would like to think i know myself very well and very comfortable with myself and my feelings. But the truth is when a new situation arises in our lives we find out how much we can stand, how far we will go, and whats more important to us. After almost 40 years of life i am still learning. Its just like a marriage. you know someone along time but if a new something arises neither of you have ever been thru you will defintely find out something new about each other and it will eventually draw you closer together than before.

Hi there,
I feel every one would claim to have known him/herself well. To be frank I have not yet known myself fully. I have not seen my faults fully as I too have some demerits. What I feel is that to know oneself fully he/she needs to go for introspection. i am trying to make a list as to where and how and why some flaws are there. And I am confident that i would be able to rectify them. And I would be too glad if my friends point them out.

Hi rio,
This is really appreciable that one knows his/herself. But the real fact is the knowledge about you that you think you have is only the surface knowledge. f you go into the deeper ;level you will start doubting your own existence asking like 'who I am'.

What we tend to know as our selves, I believe is not our true Self. As a Zen practitioner around 30 years ago, I was attending a meeting where the speaker said, "Unless you can know yourself as empty and meaningless, then you cannot know yourself."
In my daily meditation, I have constantly queried into this as it was really something that stuck in my mind. Of course the answer is never found in the rational mind, but in a profound experience of emptiness. This is not something that can be described, because the description just destroys the experience. So yes there are moments when I can know myself, but describe it? No I cannot. - Derek

Many Zen masters have said that we already know our Self but there are just barriers (ego-mind) that prevent us from seeing our true Self. And it is as easy as just looking. So near, yet so far. So simple, yet so complicated. If we try and desire it strongly, apparently we are missing the point.
Enlightenment is open to every sentient being and most of us who practice the discipline of meditation can get glimpses now and again, and then, once the mind is ripe, we will experience enlightenment and our true Self. It could happen in an instance or an eternity. We don't get to choose that one because at the moment, we choose from the rational mind or ego... An interesting discussion. Just by contemplating these questions, we grow to know more of our Self. - Derek

"Unless you can know yourself as empty and meaningless, then you cannot know yourself.". This speaks a volume on knowing ourselves. A total void one has to be to be abl3 to receive the knowledge as to how one is enabled to know oneself. This is surely a complicated process.
You mean at certain moment we can know ourselves but not all the time. Is it something that what we call knowing ourselves is the surface knowledge of the body and fleeting mind and it li8mits there only and only enlightened ones can go deeper into the self?

Hi Rajib, I agree, most of us don't really know ourselves. We feel that we do but that is because we think of situations that we have encountered. A lot of people would be surprised with how they would act if conditions made a complete turnaround. It is an illusion, most don't know who they are at all. Blessings.

Hi Kitty, I'll do my best here and give you my opinion at least. We have all known or heard of people who have done things that we could never imagine ourselves doing. We feel certain that we would never have done that. It might be stealing money from an employer or robbing a store or any of a dozen or so such things. My point is that we can never know what we would do if we were in that persons shoes as we have no idea of of what was happening in his/her life. We may know ourselves in our present context but we might be shocked to find out how we would react if we were placed in a completely different environment. Hope this has helped. Blessings.

That is what I wanted to convey thorough the post. Not all but most people would be at their wits end if suddenly there is a turn round of a particular situation. I myself sometime fail to understand myself. Wonder as to why I am doing this and not that.
What most people feel is an illusion only that they know themselves. Knowing oneself fully involves a lot of process. When I would say I know myself fully I must be able to see things into their heart and should be able to dispose and pick things when and as necessary.

Hello Pose123
I was waiting for a response from our friend, since you seem to agree, can you enlighten me, give me some idea of what could possibly happen that can make a person say I don't know who I am?
We are all aware that anything can happen, but we should know how much we can take of any given situation, you have different people in this world, some strong, some weak, some selfish, some kind, some mean and nasty, some with mental disabilities in that case I can understand, I just can't see how any one would think a person does not know ones self, ofcourse there is always room for improvement because life is a learning experience, you can learn from your own experiences as well as others, does not mean you don't know yourself just means you are open to learn new things which only enhances you, that does not say you don't know who you are,
If a person says I am perfect and don't feel the need to change anything about myself then yes something is wrong, no one is perfect and there is always room for improvement, I welcome it, but it will only improve something I already know can use a bit of adjusting, if I was not aware of the person I am, I would not know that there was room for improvement. please enlighten me, I am really curious to hear the response, anyones response, if you say something that makes me think ah ha I will admit it, but please give me something lol

We can't know ourselves until we are honest to ourselves. That is often too painful so we remain ignorant.
As we get older, we know ourselves better because we are forced by life to be more honest. I think this is why relationships fail, because we do not know ourselves. It's too bad that old age brings wisdom and honesty but it's too late to use that to foster a good romantic relationship.

Hi there,
Though not fully in the metaphysical terms knowing oneself is beyond the reach still in the gross way we can know ourselves through experience and experience, that is practical experience, comes later in life. This is why I suppose our knowledge about ourselves remain incomplete.

Me, I know myself as of what I want to do and what I want in life. But sometimes, I get confused with my feelings. What I do is I stick up firm to what I want and that's it. Sometimes the heart and mind is difficult to unite.
I don't judge people because of who they are and why they do what they do, even if it's wrong in the way you look at it. I put myself first on the shoe of that person in that way I could understand him better.

Hi there,
Very well judged response. That we feel know is like our fleeting mind. As it is there and next moment it is not here. So where is the fact that we have known ourselves? This what I feel is the skin level knowledge about ourselves that we say 'I know myself.'
Thanks for the response.

I always think I know myself so well and yet I am just amazed at the stupid crap I do. It is as if some loon comes and jumps right inside my body, goes and does these rather stupid things, and brings me back to my stupified self again unbeknownst to me. It is bizarre. I will have to do a disscussion on it. You just won't believe it!

Hi celtic,
Yes there lies the problem when knowing ourselves drops at out cap. We feel we know but the next moment things get different and the me I knew is quite different. Therefore i say that what we think we we know is only the skin level knowing.

Hello my friend
I know myself better than anyone,I know what I can or can't do, I know how much I can take, I know myself totally without a doubt the only things that may actually change is something can come along to make me better than I am, that will be a good thing, I don't believe people don't know themselves people will only show you what they want you to know, but they know themselves, how could you not? I know what can hurt me mentally,I know what would make me feel down so I know enough to stay away from certain things/people yes I know me my friend. and I love me. I like me, I worship the ground I walk on, took me a while to understand me, but I always knew me.

Hi friend kitty,
This is fine argument and accept them without getting prejudiced. Yes there are people who know their merits and demerits, strength and weakness. But still some time as we create the center of everything in us we tend to get detracted and in such case we need update. This comes in the form of discussion like this and directly from friends and foes as it were.

Hello my friend
This is called learning there is always room for growth, this does not mean you don't know who you are, just means you are willing to learn more and enhance the person that you are, there are some people who may be stuck and not willing to learn this too does not say they don't know who they are just says they have no desire to grow and become better as a person.
Still trying to understand this one my friend

Hi there,
That is the true fact. We now ourselves 'pretty' well but knowing every movement and the ripple in the mind is not easy or rather impossible. What we feel we know is the skin. Flesh and deeper flesh remain still unexplored.

Hi dawn,
Yes I agree to your view that if knowing comes you know yourself better than any one else. This thus equates to the discussion topic that we only know seemingly for a particular time and as we go one learning new things as we grow older we are not complete in knowing ourselves.

Self knowledge comes with age, I think because I began learning about myself only as I grew older, stopped long enough just to ‘be’ and ceased the constant running around and chatter. I am still working on getting to know me; I don’t think that I will ever bring my quest to an end because humans have so many facets that we probably never will stop surprising ourselves.

Hi Paula,
There is seemingly alike theory here too. The quest to explore oneself does not end as long as we are there in this mortal world. Age is a great teacher if at all we know the learning process. Even if we do not know it enters into us and leaves mark that we are yet to be fully what we are. great thought.

Wel shibhom,
I appreciate your confidence that you know yourself better. And that you have mentioned you get sometime over confident and invite trouble is the proof that what you know about yourself is the exterior of the deeper you which has not yet been explored.

Hi jscaz,
That is the problem. the constant changing thoughts are difficult to decipher all the time and what we claim to have known is basically our mortal physic.
