maybe I'm old fashion but why does a child under the age of 16 need a cellphone? At what point did it unreasonable for a child to have friends call them their parents landline? I don't know about any of you, but there's no way a kid of mine would have a cellphone before 16. There is absolutely nothing they could be talking about that is so important or private that it can't be discussed in my home. What do you guys think?

I think cell phones are good for safety. I have heard about phones that are designed for kids, when you can only make certain calls or the parents have control over the numbers that can be dialed. I think those types of phones are great, for safety reasons. Of course, I don’t think that a kid should have a cell phone just to have one, but I think that they are a great way to help keep kids safe.

i didn't have a cellphone when i was a kid, and i lived through that. we survived, didn't we? so, i really don't think it's a must for kids to have cellphones these days -- sure, times are different now, but, it couldn't be a necessity, such as food, water, and clothing.

no. I think it is utterly ridiculous when I find that there are 8 yr olds running around with cell phones....I don't even own one. I don't understand why a grade schooler would need one, now maybe teens because they have a phone to check in, but sometimes that's pushing it. I've seen teens handle their phones carelessly, dropping them on the floor, losing them. It's kind of hard even with that age because they didn't buy the phone, they have no sense of value.

I was a couple of minutes late picking up my son from the bus stop today. Another mother and I watch out for each other so I knew she would stay til I got there. When he got in the car I told him I was sorry. He is 6 and he said to me "You really should get me a phone so I can call you when this happens"! I couldn't believe it! I told him there was no way it was going to happen.
