Loud and frequent snoring is one of the symptoms of sleep apnea. This is a common, but serious condition, often associated with obesity. During sleep, the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses and blocks the airway, stopping respiration. I started snoring about 20 years ago when I started gaining weight. It got so bad my husband and I had to sleep in separate rooms. I also was sleepy throughout the day, even though I was going to bed earlier and earlier. A year ago I did a sleep study that showed I had stopped breathing 88 times during a four-hour period. I was fitted with a CPAP machine which blows air into a mask over my face, keeping my airway open. I noticed immediate results, getting my first uninterrupted night of sleep in decades. I was more alert during the day, my blood pressure improved, and I ceased having claustrophobic nightmares. If your husband's snoring is accompanied by short periods of silence followed by gasping sounds, if he wakes up often during the night or wakes up with a sore throat or headache, he should see a doctor.

where is CPAP machine available? For what purpose it is used? I will buy one for my husband. His snore is accompanied by short periods of silence followed by gasping sounds. But he do not have any sore throat or headache and do not wakess up often during the night. He is very lean weighing only 58 kgs

Your husband will need to see a doctor and be referred to a sleep study in order to get a CPAP machine. The purpose of the machine is to blow a stream of air through a tube into a mask on your face. There are two types of masks: one that covers only the nose, another that covers both the nose and the mouth. I have the latter. Obesity is not the only cause of sleep apnea. Your husband may have relaxed throat muscles, enlarged tonsils, or a smaller than normal airway. The only way the condition can be diagnosed is by doing a sleep study.

Hi vathsala30. Well that could be pretty annoying especially when you're so tired and wanted a good night sleep. That could definitely ruin your entire night and even the next day, since you didn't have enough sleep. hehe Well, as for me, I don't snore, I never did. That's a good thing, cause at least I won't be disturbing anyone's beauty rest. =)

Hi angryeve your spouse is so lucky because he/she can sleep peacefully after a tiresome day's work and be fresh the next day. Thanks for responding

I've been told that I snore. It doesn't botters me all that much though. It's the most natural thing and you have absolutely no control over it. So there shouldn't be a reason to be ashamed of it either.

Hi Eisenherz Any one who snores, do not know that they are snoring even my DH argues that he is not at all snoring but only I am lying. But what about me, neither I can sleep at night nor I can do my household work in the day because of dizziness and in the daytime also I can't sleep peacefully because of the persistent phone calls, dog bark, traffic sound, time schedule of my folk, going out and coming for lunch irregularly and the maid and the gardener. Each one's time schedule is different and they will be knocking the door time and again disturbing me.

Hi neelianoscet Snoring is natural with some people and we can not help it because we are not doing it purposefully and not to disturb anyone. Strangers may feel odd but slowly they will understand you.

I snore TERRIBLY, or so I've heard... although my roommate says that she doesn't know what people are talking about because she's never heard me snore...but she did say that I sometimes stop breathing in my sleep...and I talk. One time she said that a strange man's voice came out of my mouth while I was sleep talking and she thought the radio had randomly turned itself on but it was actually me. YIKES!

hi sredith It is really cool you are snoring terribly and your roommate does not know anything that means, she will be in her deep sleep and that is the reason, she does not hear you snoring. Thanks for responding

My father was a great snorer. It was an incessant music of bumble bees. Then it was my husband's turn. But this is a light motor cycle start sound. When I catch cold, family says I snore lightly, may be because nose is blocked. Then you have to ask my family to explain the nature of the snore.

Hi aRiSdGrEaT Really your mates are so lucky to have you as their co-mate. Don't hate your brother yaar, after all what is his fault? It is happening just like that and he is not responsible in any way. Definitely we feel it hard to sleep when some one is snoring like a base drum but what to do.

i don't snore as my wife had told me. but our two year old son do, since 4 months that we noticed him snores like a grown up, like an adult person. but i would like to correct you, snoring is not a habit. it is a symptom of sleep apnea. this is the state in a sleeping person that stops breathing while asleep. here is one discussion i have started about snoring and sleep apnea: http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1888045.aspx thanks for this discussion...

My younger brother sleep with me and he never wake up during the night so I guess I never disturb his sleep. We also have one of my cat, Kitty sleeping with us and it doesn't seem disturb as well.

Hi prinzcy If your mom says that you are snoring, then definitely you will be snoring. So long as it will not disturb the others including your cat, it is a nice snore only. he he he

Hi gopi Thanks for responding. In every household, if one snoring member is there, it is nightshift for the remaining family members, I think.
