Should The Tip Be Less For An All You Can Eat Buffet Style Restaurant?

Hi Mylotters I had a convesation with some co-workers about tipping a waitress at a buffet style restaurant as opposed to a regualar restaurant. Some of them said they would tip less at the all you can eat buffet. I can see why they feel this way I sort of agree with them because in my opinion I am getting my own food sometimes my own drink depending on where I go some buffets have it set up where you get your own drinks as well. The waiter/waitress is just clearing the table of extra dishes and glasses their doing less work they don't have to bring you sauces or lemmons ect.. those things are already at the bar.So technically they are doing less going back and forth. I will also say that sometimes it depends on how good the waitress/waiter does their job... there have been times where they didn't clear the plates and glasses it took them a long time to come around to our table I think thats because they know your getting your own food and drink and don't check back as much. That happens a from time to time with the Golden Corral and Cactus Willies Restaurants around here. My husband has this tip sheet that tells you what the correct percentages are for based on the amount of the check. So we usually follow that and then give a little extra if the service was really good. However I would give more to the buffet style restaurant waitress with a good personality who smiles and gives good service and less if anything at all to a regular restaurant waitress who gives crappy service and vice versa.

Well I believe that it is important to tip at least the minimum amount because they still work hard to prepare the food for the tables and they always clean up after customers. If I find that they don't clean the table well or something then maybe I would pay a little less. But if they're helpful and help me pick good foods or help me with my drink then I'll pay them more for their service.

Hi Karakatad As far as I know waiters and waitresses don't prepare the food for the table they just serve the food to the coustomer the cooks prepare the meal. But I see your point about them working hard especially when it gets busy waitresses do work hard when they are aerving many customers and yes that can be hard work on a busy night

You make several good points in your discussion. While you are getting your own food and sometimes drink in a buffet style restaurant, the wait staff still has a part to play in your dining experience. My theory is that I will tip well if the service I receive is good...whether that means serving my food to me or simply clearing away used plates and glasses. A friendly personality makes the atmosphere nicer and that's worth something as well. If the service is good and the waitress/waiter is friendly and attentive my husband and I tip 15% or more.

Hi Spalladino Thank you for the response I feel the same way you do in that regard a smile and a friendly personality can go a long way for a waiter or waitress after all it is how they make their living but they don't always come out smiling do they LOL It can't be helped though some people are just having a bad day at work we all have had that from time to time. And your right the waitress does play a role even if he or she is only clearing plates and bringing drinks.

That's a good question. It's almost like tipping at a fast food restaurant, which I've never really thought about before. I've never tipped somewhere like McDonald's but the people there are really doing about the same work as someone at a buffet restaurant. I actually don't remember the last time we went to a buffet but I think that if we were to go I would just leave a few dollars on the table and call it good. Unless the server really went out of their way, then I would leave a little extra.

Hi cherryd41, We tip the waiter or waitress usually but if he or her has been very unpleasant then we tip the minimum. We also leave tip in the Bar/Pubs something which hardly anyone does now but they work really long hours for a miserable wage most of the times. We always make sure they pick up their tip before some long handed person tries to take it off them. That can happen so we make a point that the tip is for them.

Yes, I occasionally give out tips. No fixed amount unless the government has ordered it. In my country,5% goes to tips for service (Malaysia). It is mandated. so, if you want to tip, it is extra. There is no compulsion. True, we tip because we are happy with a particular waiter or waitress. Also remember most of them share tips and whatever you give will enter a pool fund and redistributed at the end of the day. As such, all your good intention will finally come to naught!

I don't know if it SHOULD be but for me it typically is less- probably by about 5%. My usual tipping habit is usually 20% for good service, 15% for okay and never or very rarely less than 10% even for not so good service. In self-serve places it's the same minus about 5%. I sure would like to see the tipping checklist you mention though

I tend to tip less on the buffets because really....you are doing most of the work. At some of them you are even expected to clear your own tables and all. The waitresses are just there to help if needed and to make sure the food is replenished on the buffet. It is more comparable to catering. Now I did a lot of catering and I almost never got tips. Not saying it isn't as much work because it is. It just isn't as personal.

In my country most people won´t leave any tip at a buffet style restaurant. They don´t have proper waiters, maybe a couple of people that have no relationship with the people who are eating. If one of them does something special for me, I will tip him or her. As for the normal restaurants, the tip here should be about 10%. When I went to those restaurants with my husband, I took care of that. I play a little with that percentage and it depends how I am served. This is more noticeable when you eat out with children. Sometimes they give the waitress more work. Now that I´m a widow, I´m always invited so I don´t pay. My friends give generous tips. I would be very ashamed if they didn´t. Some people just leave a couple of coins. Happy posting!
