I've just gone back to school at the age of 24. I currently have a Toshiba laptop which is about 3 years old. I've never really considered purchasing a Mac until now, but most of my family has switched over to Mac and we use them at college for all of our multimedia and music classes.
I'm a music student, so I need something speedy with good multimedia capability.
I also enjoy doing research online and tend to run many programs at once.
What do you think? What have your experiences been with Mac vs. PC?
I really appreciate the help; I know it's the age old question!

The thing that puts me off getting an Apple is the price. I looked at a Mac recently with less raw power than the PC I bought 18 months ago, and the Mac was still £500 more expensive. Macs would have to be unbelievably better to make up for the price differential.

You and I have the same thought process - I haven't quite figured out if the value is there to justify the additional cost. Thanks for the help!

If you are looking at multimedia, music and speed.. its got to be APPLE
If you are looking at security, virus free, spyware free.. its got to be APPLE.
If you are looking at price.. u can get a PC laptop for 30k, apple is not cheap
Overall - My recommendation - APPLE.
There is no competition to Apple and incase if u do plan to buy Apple, look for Tiger 2.0 OS

I still prefer pc than mac as well!!So naturally amc have a ogood style from an external view but i never understood the big deals as regards functionalities for mac than a pc too, exept the price as well because mac is much more expensive than many pc as well!!
So i still prefer pc!!Even the mac os as regards os i don't like too much and the limitation about the policy and licence in amc is really heavy!!So i will spend so much money and afterthat they oblige me to spend more money for expensive software that i can have soem good freeware if i have my pc?mmh..strange!!

I am a Mac fan and I urge you to get a Mac if you never tried one. But of course, if you are choosing between a Mac or a PC, you must seriously consider whether your favorite applications can run on a Mac. Mac is great, but one big disadvantage is it cannot run most window applications. Especially when you are using some small and useful application developed by individual or open source projects. The bright side is there are also many open source developers developing Mac applications for free, just that they are not as many as their Window counterpart.
There are also awesome programs for Mac, such as Apple's very own iLife and iWork. If it is your first time using, they will blow you out of this world! Very impressive.
Since you are a music student, it is good to take note that many people involved in the multimedia/creative sector do use a Mac.
So if you want my advice, get a Mac if you never tired one before! It is worth the experience at least!

If you have enough budget, go for MAC (intel). You can find the advantages of MAC in some other discussions here in myLot.
If your budget is tight go for PC.
