What do you do with books that you don't want anymore?

I have a bunch of books that I don't want (mostly novels and some textbooks) and I don't want to toss them in the trash. I was thinking about swapping them online. I can't remember the name of the websites right now. The way it works is someone requests a book, you send it to them and you get points. Each book is worth a certain amount of points and the more you swap, the more books you can request. Has anyone done this? How did it work out? Have you ever sold your books? Where did you sell them (besides eBay)?

I've been selling books online for a little over a year now and have generated close to $75K. I run a blog at sellyourbooksonline.com that teaches others how to successfully sell books online also. It might be worthwhile to come and check it out. I usually recommend to start out selling on Amazon and then branch out from there.

The unwanted books go to the old paper buyers who buy and sell the papers for recycling. The wander the streets shouting to buy the old papers.See the image I have uploaded for you to see.
My daughters old test books and note books I give away to any poor child who cannot afford to buy the new ones.

If the book is really very important then i will save it cause someday it is useful as well.the rest of my book maybe i will give those who need them.Sending book to the library seem like a good choice.

My textbooks when I was taking college classes I sold to other students taking that classes. Most of the novels I keep what I really like then the rest I try to sell at my yard sale and sometimes I give to charities.

We have a local mom and pop used bookstore that will literally buy your books . . . not for cash, but for store credit. I've given them tons of books and have built up a decent amount of store credit so all of us in our family can go pick out whatever we want at any time. I like dealing locally, that way I don't have to deal with shipping costs. Books can be pretty heavy!

I tried the whole swapping thing but I didn't think it was so fair. I prefer selling them over swapping. I've sold text books on Amazon that the bookstore wouldn't give me anything for. I've sold books I've had on my shelf for years and never read. I tried selling books on Half.com but I really didn't have any success with them. I've gotten rid off quite a bit of books on Amazon so it's definitely my first choice.

I'd probably go with the usual suspects...Ebay or Amazon to try and make a little money back on the original outlay..I'd support local charity shops and have passed some their way too. A concept for books I read about but haven't tried out yet is the bookcrossing.com site...the idea is that you sign up for the site and you can then put your membership ID on a book, then leave it where someone can find it..the person who next reads it can log into the site and over time,if the book keeps moving on to others, you can see where your book goes on it's travels! A sort of catch and release for books..Of Course,You could always donate books to a Library in your area...

I pass many on to friends and they pass them on etc. Some I bring to the used book store for credit. Last year I cleaned out my book shelves and brought her about 50 books. I got credit for about 15 new ones. Fine with me. I need to go through my shelves again and bring another 50 to the book store. I'm double shelving again. I have no room for what I have, so they need to go.

I would like to know of a site like the one you're talking about. I have a lot of books because I truly like to read. I have recently been buying some books off of ebay because the library in this town don't carry as many of my favorite author's books as I am used to. I decided that I needed to create my own library of her stuff since I like to reread her stories. Most of the time I don't keep fiction that I've already read unless it appeals to me so much that I know I will want to revisit.
Where I lived before there were several places where you could take your already read books and trade them for ones in the store. The ratio was usually 2 for 1 but that was okay. I hardly ever buy a book brand new because I can't afford the price. I much prefer getting my books from yard sales or ebay but I would love a system where I could trade.

I have not done this online, however I have a used book store around the corner from me and when I take the books that I no longer want I get credit towards books there. They have a system that every 20th book you buy you get one free, and when you bring in books you get credit for each book towards your 20th book... it works out great for me since I can get my books from 1.75-3.00 since I am a member there and it doesnt cost me much to support my book habit!!
Happy mylotting and happy reading!

There are allot of good sites for disposing of your books already read. One would be book swaps, barter, trade sites. I am sure if you search via a search engine, you will find what you seek. I am currently using KYTradersClassifieds dot com.
You can get all your items collecting dust posted for exchange. Invite all your friends, family, and customers to post also. If you have any questions on these types of sites, there also is information Faq's on it.

I use a couple of sites. One is called greenmetropolis and you list your books and get a set amount for each one you sell and simply post it to the buyer. All books listed on the site are at a set price including postage. you can use money you make from sales on the site or have it transferred to your bank account. My favourite site at the moment is called readitswapit. Again you list all your books then find someone who has a book you want and tell them you would like to swap. They then look at your books and if they see something they want then a swap is agreed. You simply then post the books to one another, effectively getting a new book for the price of a few stamps.

I too have many books, usually I give them to friends or relatives but never sell them,to those who have not read the books and who are interested to read them. I can't tell you about the websites because I have never gone through that sites. I would suggest you to give them in the Library or give them to someone who are interesting in reading books, or exchange your books with them if they are having some books in which you are interested to read.

Yeah i do have lots of books that is now useless for me..i haven't tried swapping them online but once i tried selling them at about 50% of the face value at the book store..i have also gave some of it to my friends too..i keep some useful course books for my brother too..but most of the time i sell them and earn some pocket money. This is the good idea and you dont have to trash them too...

I find it extremely hard to get rid of my books.Unless I really despised them.As there is something about books that just make them feel part of my soul.
Amazon seem to have a bigger clientel for books.I would try there first. Why get points when you can get cash .Then you are free to purchase whatever books you want from where ever you want.xxx
