popular lore tells us Christopher Columbus discovered America but apart from the fact that prehistoric man first reached these shores at least 2 millenia BCE (and nowadays many archaelogists are finding evidence it could have been a LOT earlier) and the Vikings (Leif Erickson) supposedly found their way here too in the first millenium of the Common Era, I've also been discovering lately that other Spanish and Portugese explorers got to the Americas before Columbus...anybody know more? Like WHO America was named after for example - let's start there

America was named after Amerigo Vespucci(I don't know if I spelled it right), an explorer who came before Christopher Columbus and explored almost half of the new world. I don't know If I got it right but that's how I remember it

Vespucci came AFTER Columbus. His discovery was that America was a new continent and not part of the Indies.

your right mar, I knew something was off with what I posted, I just can't tell what it was then. Now I know. Thanks for correcting me. I need to take vitamins to refresh my memory hehe.

America was named after Americo Vespucci. Columbus never realized he had discovered a new continent. Vespucci did, so the continent was named after him. I still don´t find it fair. Many wonderful discoveries in every branch of human knowledge are made because someone was daring enough to explore for the first time the new path. I give my vote to those and not to the ones that come later (even if their work looks more awesome). Colombia was named after Columbus though.
As for the people that were in America before Columbus, of course they had to come from somewhere. It´s fascinating the way all the time new theories open new roads of thoughts, including continents that were together then because of the ice age.
Have a good day!

I agree with you 100% marguicha...in fact this is a real passion of mine - to know the REAL story behind inventions, discoveries, origins and history in general. Fascinating stuff!

This is just a story but from what I understand, Asian people, mongolian people to be more precise, settled in America first... Some of them migrated south & settled, currently China, Korea, Japan & etc, some migrated north & settled & became eskimos & others... Ones that actually made over settled in "America" & they're modern day american indians... If you look at all those different people, you'll see a very similiar facial & other features... Just a thought...
