Is there much difference between certain names, such as Donald and Ronald, or Laura and Lauren? I had a friend named Lauren and she would always get offended when someone called her Laura instead. Donald is of Gaelic and English origin according to parentsconnect.com and means "world rule;" Ronald means "ruler with counsel" and is of English and Norse origin. Laura is of Latin origin meaning "laurel" and Lauren is Latin and French meaning "man from Laurentum." What are your thoughts and experiences?

I think the thing about names is that people feel protective of their name. It may have nothing to do with the meaning - even if two names mean something similar or sound similar. That's like someone pronouncing a name wrong, people tend to get mad and correct them. I think it's just the fact that the person feels like that name is who they are, and they want to be called the right one! I don't feel like that made a lot of sense. Lol I tried to explain what I was thinking but I'm not so sure it came out as I was thinking it.

My wifes name is Cory, sometimes people think its a guys name and when they see the name they think I'm with a guy and I've adopted two kids, wrong! There are several ways to spell my daughters name and finding a key chain or little trinket with the correct spelling is almost like a scavenger hunt. I guess the meaning of the name is more important than the spelling.

To me there is a huge difference. My real name isn't Sarah. i chose this name because I Loathe my real name. Everyone butchers my real name. Either they say it wrong or spell it wrong. I just hate it. I am stuck with it because it was my mom's favorite girl name . Now that she is dea ,i think it would be very disrespectful to leaglly change it. Well, at least here I can be the Sarah I always wanted to be. ps. if you want to know my real name , send me a pm and I'll tell you but youhave to promise to keep it a secret.

Your name is a representation of who you are. If people can't be bothered to get your name right, that makes you feel like they don't care about you. Not that it is necessarily true that they don't care, but it's how it feels. It is such a common thing that it is used symbolically in movies and books. For example, in Blazing Saddles, the Governor keeps getting the name of his assistant wrong, which leads him, and viewers, to believe that he is not important. So he tries to do things to catch his boss's attention and prove that he is worthy. I don't think I get offended, exactly, but it does bother me when people get my name wrong. I feel like it means that I'm not important enough to be remembered.

my name is Kathlyn with the lyn not Kathrine or Kathleen which I get called all the time. one thing for me is there are sooo many of the other to and not very many of mine(in my area anyway) so My name is unique and i like it that way. so the name is a personal thing some people even have nick names instead of using there real name. most of the time any more I just say my name is Kathy that way they can't get it wrong. My niece is ayesha pronounced like aye aye caption. but everyone pronounces it like I E sha and she gets mad. its like someone spelling your name wrong.

Well I know girls who are touch about Sar and Sarah or Laura Lora. I'm not sure. I'm a female and my name is Bobbie and I get really really annoied when people call me Bob cause it's a guys name. Though I realize my name is typically a guys name it still bugs me. My middle name is Jo and it doesnt really bother me when people call me Jo or JoJo as for some odd reason a lot of people do. I'm not sure why some people are just touchy about htings I suppose.

There is a BIG difference between names like that. And being called another name, no matter how similar it may sound is always irritating because in short, it isn't your own name!! My name is Isabelle and I get SO annoyed when people call me Isabella or shorten my name without my permission, because it's not my name. I like my name and I don't appreciate you calling me something else.
