A Dog, a Porcupine, a Pair of Pliers and a Toyota

This morning I went out to bring my Spunky girl in for some we time. I'd finally been able to leave her outside in her run, as the neighbours from next door had returned to the city.
Or at least, I thought I'd been able to leave her in her dog run, which is where she prefers to be at night.
She wasn't there. She'd managed to escape again, but thanks to rain the night before, I could follow her tracks to the neighbours RV, and then lost them in the high grass behind the backyard.
Found her waiting by the side of the road for me at the other end of town, just this side of a copse of woods and fully ripe fall wheat fields. When I got close enough to her I could see why she was just sitting there waiting.
She had a snout full of porcupine quills. A new first for Spunky. lol She hung her head when I got out of the car and let me lead her into the backseat without any resistance at all. Another first as she usually makes a game of getting in and out of the vehicle.
She didn't seem to be in any pain, but she sure was ashamed of herself. lol
I finally screwed up my courage to remove the quills myself, as going to the city and the vet was out of the question. She was whimpering and I thought she was in pain and I should get them out fast. She was whimpering because she KNEW they had to come out and she knew it would hurt! I managed to get the first one out with a pair of pliers, but she streaked for the underside of my bed when it was out and wouldn't come near me for love or milkbones. Thirst drove her out from under the bed about two hours later and I found her in the kitchen trying to lap up water from her bowl, and not succeeding because the quills were hitting the side of the bowl and that made her whimper and back off.
So I went into town and asked every man I found to come and help me hold Spunky while I removed the rest. I knew I couldn't do it on my own, as she is too big and strong and already knew what was going to happen.
WELL EVERY MAN IN MY TOWN IS A COWARD! Not ONE of them would help, but they all sure laughed! Men are such babies!
So what to do?
Well I'm a Geek Girl right?
I came up with a Geek Girl solution.
I seat belted her into the front seat of my Toyota on the drivers side after moving the seat forward enough so she was wedged in against the steering wheel, but not under too much pressure.
Then I taped her mouth shut with electrical tape (it doesn't stick to dog hair very well, and not enough to hurt when I took it off).
I put a blindfold over her eyes and climbed into the back seat. The whole time I talked to her calmly and she remained passive.
Then I took the headrest out, and reached forward with my left hand and held her head firmly back against the seat.
With my right hand I reached around with the pliers and pulled out a quill. She tried to throw her head around, and I let her go. But she couldn't get out of the seat and soon quieted down again. Still talking soothingly to her I removed the rest of the quills with a break in between. Then I removed the blindfold and tape.
She hardly bled and when it was all over, I let her out of the car, and she just looked at me. I reached down and gently stroked her nose, and she realized that the quills were gone. When I stood up, she did something she's never done before. She jumped up, put her front paws on each of my shoulders tried to lick the freckles off my face. Spunky NEVER jumps up on people's shoulders. Ever. So..............
I think she's forgiven me. Click on her pic to see the quills........
How do you take quills out ladies. We KNOW the men can't do it without anesthetic! LOL

I know she must have been hurting..She was ashamed too for escaping and getting into so much trouble for her efforts,,poor baby..
The men were such cowards and had the nerve to laugh..
But not to worry Geek Girl to the rescue..What a great idea..
Yes she has forgiven you because you took the pain away and she loves you.
Blessings to you and Spunky..

My poor Spunky! I think I was in more distress than she was until I got the damn things out. I'm so glad it's over and I came up with a solution. All the wussie men in town were no help at all! LOL Just spoke to the hubs and he's relieved too. He was going to come home tomorrow and do it himself, and now he doesn't have to. Big relief all around.............

You're hubs is a man's man then Barb! LOL Good for him! And frankly, I wasn't too keen on doing it myself, but in the end I had no choice. Spunky is perfectly fine now, but I'm still a little stressed! lol

The only way I would have tried to remove them is if, for some reason, my husband wasn't here and wouldn't be for awhile. I'm just not a dog person - they are fine in the yard, but I don't pet them. My grandkids think I'm crazy, but that's just me. Now, when I was young and at home, I'd even put the dog in a tub and bathe him, but I grew up.

Good Lord! When I saw the title of this discussion, I thought you must have been stalking me and filming my activities last night??? Mind you, I involved a Lexus, not a Toyota so I figured I was pretty safe.....
This sounds horrible! The poor bugger. Jeez sparky, most people go shopping or sleep in on the weekends! lol.

I feel so bad for Spunky. I am glad you were able to help him. It is sad when the men won't or can't help in situations like this. I saw the picture of him. I hope he heals up quickly. Of course the experience might stay with him for awhile. Give him lots of love and treats for me.

Oh Daffy,
How horrible for Spunky and you!! Any chance she's learned her lesson? It's a good thing she's worth it. Poor Baby!!
You sure are a smart cookie. Only a Geek Girl would be able to figure out this solution. Well done Daffy. What better thank you than that hug and kisses she endowed you with.
Love Ya

Mighty resourceful of you Sparks, mighty resourceful indeed! You are so much more than a good looking Geek girl aren’t you? I would have liked to have seen you as you ‘operated’ on Spunky. Those quills are huge! Poor Spunky, it must have hurt her, no wonder she was so grateful when you got them out for her! Another job well done by a Geek Girl!

once in a while, one of my ogres will get a snoot full of stink, compliments of our local skunk population. watching them paw at their faces and yelp is sadly, sickly funny.
I've found that grapefruit juice works better than tomato juice, and dawn will strip the smelly oils out in no time.
poor Spunky, she looks down right miserable in that photo!

You are a really smart geek girl. Of course we know that necessity is the mother of invention. Not the father of invention. I probably would have looked around for something to numb it, and I would be searching real quickly now to see if porcupine quills cause infection. I love how animals love us, even when we do awful stuff for their own good.

As long as the wounds are cleaned afterwards she'll be fine. I did call the vet, and he told me that as she'd just had her shots last week, she'd be fine, but on the whole, quills don't cause any side affects unless the tip doesn't come out. In that case, they often travel to the heart and that's nasty, but it doesn't happen often apparently. So it's all good, thank heavens. I've been more stressed than Spunky has I think! LOL

She's a good girl and my best friend here. But with all the critters on the move preparing for winter, I just hope she stays away from the Porcupines. I saw one this morning crossing the road in front of the house, but Spunky was indoors with me, thank heavens......

Poor, poor dear Spunky. She must have been so scared and she was so far away too.
I'm so proud of you Sparks as I would not have thought of anything like that...it would have been a 45 minute trip to the vet for us. I hope she's still ok. We have something similar here called and echidna...the quills are poisonous.

It seems Spunky was lucky. A short time after I read your discussion I saw a photo of a dog with it's whole face covered in the things. They were over and around his eyes and all over and under his muzzle. He was obviously in agony. There must have been a hundred quills in him, some long, some short.
I found the photo, be sure to show it to Spunky. It's not the right file type for here so I will email you the full thing.

I got it Tickle. Nearly threw up looking at it, and poor Spunky looked at me as if SHE was in pain, when I showed it to her and explained what it was. Don't think I'll have to worry about her getting too close to a porc for awhile thank heaven. Amazing how smart some animals are about some things and just plain stupid about others. lol

Thank goodness our porcs quills aren't poisenous. I'd have lost my mind if they were.
Spunky is fine now. Within a day of the quills being out she was her happy self, but she keeps her nose much higher off the ground these days! LOL

Oh poor Spunky!! LOL What a hell of a lesson she had to learn! I've heard quite a bit about porcupine and their quills but never encountered one, thank God. I just hope it was a lesson learned and she'll stay right where she belongs from now on but for some reason, I doubt it.

Oh dear God I hope not!! When I was a young gal, we had a collie who kept getting sprayed by a skunk and wondered why we wouldn't go near him!! He stunk to the high heavens for weeks and weeks at a time!! Is there a remedy for that?

Someone here said that they use grapefruit juice instead of tomato, and you know that just might work as the acids are more intense and would break down the odor faster. So try that.

wow that sure sounds like an adventure! Poor doggy, sounds like she was not upset at you though... probably very glad to have her snout clean of porcupine quills. Poor girl must have been scared at first, but she knew her mommy was coming to get her I bet. We have chihuahua's here, and two cats... never had to do anything but cut a toe nail here... I want to say there was something else, but I can't think of it so I guess not.

Not much to say on those two stories. Our dog got bit, maybe you've read about it, hellcowboy is my fiance, he posted something on it awhile back.'
Our dogs bark at the neighbors they see walking down the street all the time... Sometimes they won't come when called... but most of the stuff is cute rather then stupid... Though they have gone to play in the field where horse manure is a few times... That's kind of silly, You think they'd know better. It stinks, they have to smell it better then us humans do... and they always get a bath afterwards.
