Call Center Agent vs English Tutor

Philippines

It's kind of hard to look for a job as a registered nurse nowadays, and I really need the money. It gets harder to ask money from my parents knowing that I have already graduated and passed the Local Board Exam. So, while waiting for my license which is still being processed, my friends and I have decided to apply for a couple of jobs. What would be more logical for us to apply for? As call center agents or as english tutors?

Where would you be comfortable, teaching or handling clients? Why not apply as a medical transcriptionist? It's not difficult to train nurses because they have a solid foundation in anatomy, human diseases, and pharmacology, which are some of the major requirments. Who knows, one day, you can use this experience to become a home-based medical transcriptionist someday. You'll earn really big in home-based.

i have tried working as both. i was an english tutor to koreans and i was also a call center agent before. i think working in a call center was more tiring for me most especially if there were a lot of calls and all i did was talk non-stop for hours. being an english tutor was less stressful because my tutees that time did not yell at me or cursed me. lol. and the pay was basically the same. i dunno. i guess it's still up to you.

What's the average number of calls do you get per day? I really have no idea how call centers work! As for being an english tutor, how many students could you handle each day? I wouldn't want to face a room with 30 beginning students!

it depends on the account. i was in an account that received at least 500 calls per agent per shift. a call lasted about 30-50 seconds. i was also in another account that received at least 10 calls per agent per shift. that meant that each call lasted about an hour. i had only 2 students when i was a tutor. it was like a one-on-one thing. 2 hours a day per student. so that's 4 hours of work everyday. and i get paid the same amount as working in an 8-hour shift. good luck!

you can do both. work as a call center agent then do tutoring parttime. and also you can do home based medical transcription parttime.

Call center agents is often a job that's searched a lot. Good luck finding still some vacant placements, can't say I had any. As for english tutor...well, might be easier, then again the income isn't steady.

Yeah, call center jobs are searched a lot. As for being a tutor, I have a friend who quit her job as one and applied for a job at a call center. I haven't talked to her again if she got the new job though..

Just like what the others mentioned, If you want a steady income then go for a Call Center... But application regarding in your situation might be difficult, Your'e already a nurse and they might think that you'll be having commitment issues. I have some friends who tried applying but they were not hired because they're RN already.

Absolutely! I had a classmate (and close friend) who tried applying in a Call Center. Upon handing in his resume, he was informed that he'll be the last interviewee for the day. He waited for an hour and when it was his turn, the secretary opened his resume and saw he was a nurse. The immediate reply was: "I'm sorry, but we do not hire nurses here." Oh well, waiting for nothing.

Basically, it's up to you. where you will work, where you will conduct your tutorials, and the people around you with whom you will work with. Its great to meet and talk to people, so choosing either would be equally good. but, personally, i do not like going into call centers because it does not help our country in any way. or so i believe. my brother has been working for a cell center company for five years now and his salary is getting bigger, but i don't think that our economy is affecting it. You see, call centers sprang up like mushrooms these past two years i think, and what is happening to our economy? nothing. still going downhill. that just means one thing, call centers do not help the economy; but hey, if that's your thing, go for it. I mean, yeah, offers for a call center agent is pretty high especially for a fresh graduate. but there are still other choices out there.

There has really been a big boom for outsourcing nowadays. I was surprised as to the increasing number of new call centers here in our place. I really wanted to have a job that's related to my field, the least to say. But when times are really hard, you just have to take whatever is being offered, at least for the meantime...

Call center deal with customers but not directly and you don't have to see the reaction for real. A tutor must deal with students directly (unless it's online school) Tutors also need to do research before class. Just pick the one that you feel more comfortable with. Good luck~~~
