Okay, the other morning I am listening to the TV and there is a woman who is a successful plus size model. She is wearing a size 12.
She is 5' 9" and wearing a size 12 and she is a plus size...I am not sure on what planet.
She was down to 95 pounds and was told that she needed to lose more weight. She did not feel good and was not happy and told them to take a hike.
She plans on designing a plus size line of clothing.
When I hear stuff like this, it is not a wonder that bulimia and anorexia is so prevalent in teenage girls.
BTW -- I do not agree with my subject line
How do you think we should be teaching about a healthy body image and healthy weight? WHat do you think of this?

Hey I suffered from 'bulimia' before it had a name or was 'popular' and I think this is totally rediculous. My body is totally messed up because of the 'thin is in' mind set and it tee's me off to see something like a size 12 being a plus size... I don't think there should even be 'plus sizes' that right there is giving a bad feeling - if your a plus you must be 'big'... It's crazy and all it's doing is teaching young girls (and boys) that the wrapping is more important than the package (what's inside the person)...
Size 12 here and proud of it - not a sickly size 7 any more!

Oh you were a trend setter and you see how it has hurt you. I am sorry that it happened to you and at that point probably no one recognized it.
At least you did not end up like Karen Carpenter.
You are right, we should work on what is on the inside not the outside.
My son has always dated these skinny girls. the last girl he brought home was small (5 ft) but not teeny tiny skinny. She is cute as a button. And I really liked her. She ate food and was not wrapped up in being skinny, she ate cake and outrageous desserts at a wedding she came to with us. Some of the other girls would eat just their fries and then they were full. Skinny but not healthy.

Luckily I caught myself in time. I used to starve, then binge and by the Grace of God or something I noticed I was developing a problem when I started to think about being sick ie. I'm glad you're over it now. Yes, calling it 'plus size' is ridiculous.
I know Beyonce is very toned, but she definitely has big thighs and bum, and JLo of course. Both sexy women but not skinny at all. There are some good role models out there.

95 pounds? I am 5'9" and size 12 but I am about 140 pounds! 95 pounds is as skinny as a sparrow if she is that tall, so I am glad she decided against losing any weight.
It is supposed to be the fault of the designers, who insist that the girls who model their clothes are a certain size. The model agencies simply say that their girls won't get any work unless they fit the clothes. I can't think of how we can ever change the minds of the designers.
You are right, it is terribly unhealthy. Personally, I think skinny thighs are gross anyway. xx

You would love my thighs. I think the 0 might possibly be an indicator of IQ is that is not the size someone was meant to be. If a 0 gets to be too big do they have negative sizes?
I think someone has to step in and start pushing healthy weights and body images to these designers. If the media stopped covering these events.... they might stop.

...and what the hell is size zero anyway? Does it mean that you are actually invisible between your chest and your hips

A few weeks ago while visiting my daughter in Tennessee we went in a Lane Bryant store. She also wears a size 12 but guess what, they don't carry that size as it is not considered a plus size (for women). I think we have heard "be fit and slim" so much that we have turned away from good nutritional meals and started eating nothing but salad greens. This can NOT be good for us, our bodies needs more of a balance in foods. I think the reason the models are so slim is it saves the designer money on material to make the clothes. They sure don't look healthy. I did have to wear a size 0 and/or a 1 until I had my 5th child. I am now in a size 6 or 8 and I feel much better. I am 5' 7" and my doctor says I need to gain at least another 10 lbs. That will be hard to do since I am a diabetic and have to watch the fat and carbohydrates I eat to keep my blood sugar under control. I read that most teens were overweight from eating so much fast foods and junk snacks. All they need to do is change to healthier foods to look good.

I have been losing weight and I will not even claim that all I eat is salads. I eat french toast, omelets, yesterday I had salmon for dinner, today was pork chops. Every day I do eat a lot of fruits and veggies but I also eat protein and dairy and carbs.
Wow, I have never heard of a diabetic that needs to gain weight.

The sad part to being a size 12 now and being a plus size is I swear the clothing is smaller than what it once was. LOL I don't think being a size 12 should be a plus size. People need to be realistic. What happened to everyone's mind. You see people on tv and OOOHHH you want to look like them. I'm sorry, if I see a size two girl with a size 4 boy it doesn't matter what size the girl is, no guy should be that small. LOL

No one should aim to weigh a weight that is unhealthy. Either male or female.
I think they are making the sizes bigger. The last time I wore a size 12 I was at least 15 pounds lighter. I can fit into a 10..but I can't breathe and turn blue.
But no matter how you look at it..size 12 is not a plus size. This woman has a healthy BMI.

It's been so long since I was in a size 12 I wouldn't know. LOL
I agree that everyone should shoot for a healthy weight. What weights are listed medically aren't always the weight that your body is comfortable with. I totally believe in listening to your body. As long as you are healthy, the weight isn't too important. It's something everyone probably needs to look at differently. Never mind weight. Are you HEALTHY? Who cares what others look like if you aren't happy with yourself you aren't going to be happy with anyone else. Personally I like to see curves on men and women. No woman should be a size two unless she is five feet tall! Then, it still is too small.

Wow, like you I am thinking, on what planet. I am a size 20-22 right now. I used to be a size 30 (wow, when I was first out of high school). I've had two children in the past seven years and I've still managed to go down sizes and for that I am very proud. The size 30 was during the darkest time of my life when I was quite depressed and turned to food for comfort. Then, I met the man of my dreams and realized that I needed to take some pride in myself and start to live a healthier lifestyle.
I'm proud of the progress that I've made in the right direction over the past years, and especially this year alone. My goal is to be able to wear a size 12 because I always thought that was a ladies size. It would also put me to the same size that I wore when I was 12 years old. The emphasis that people put on outward appearance is just too much.
I think that we should be teaching children to be happy about who they are as opposed to developing eating disorders in young people because of the emphasis that is placed on weight in our society.

Congratulations, you are doing great. I am now in a size 12 and feeling great. Yes, there is too much emphasis on outward appearance. We need to teach people to be healthy not excessively skinny.

I saw an article about this lady and must say I really applaud her for walking away from it. A lot of people in the industry can't walk away and end up looking a hot thin pile of mess by the end of the day. I hope it gets better in the future. The world needs to learn to embrace curves. Marline Monroe was a size 14 and considered one of the most beautiful women in history but you sure as hell dont see any bigger girls on the cover of play boy anymore. We need to prove to our children and grand children they need to be healthy not a size 2 or 0

Marilyn Monroe's size 14 is the same dimensions as today's size 8. Not everyone will be a size 2 or 0...thank god. One strong wind and there would be people flying all over the place.
If you look at the old playboys (pre-twiggy) the women looked healthy and curvy - not bony and airbrushed.

I don't know what kind of an ill conceived program you saw on TV. 5"9" and 95 lbs and still overweight???? yes, I also ask on what planet. Since when is a size 12 a plus size. Here in Canada you get clothes up to size 16 before you have to go to plus size shops or the plus size department.
Yes, I do think we should teach kids about healthy body image but also about healthy eating. We have an epidemic here of adults who are overweight or obese and diabetes is becoming a major health issue. Sadly also, more and more children are overweight. Anorexia and bulemia are also problems. I think society has to become modest and more frugal in their eating habits and shy away from the totally evil foods such as soft drinks, fat snacks and overprocessed foods.

Yes, we should start pushing healthier food, I go to a certain Deli because I know I can get fresh fruit there. It is amazing how many deli's only sell unhealthy high fat stuff with huge sandwiches.

YEs, or they will recover but do permanent damage to their bodies. I had a friend like that. She wanted to be skinny. She did damage to her heart by not eating enough protein.

They are calling her a plus size model. What bugs me about that is a person who wears a size 20 will see a woman who is a size 12 wearing the clothing she is buying then she will hate herself because this 'plus' size model looks so much better.

I am outraged by this..but how many kids, teenagers believe this? How many kids will hear this and then start trying to lose weight in the wrong way and get sick.

Hey Debs~First of all I do not consider a size 12 a plus size!
And neither does any store! A size 12 and 14 is a normal size!
A plus size starts at size 20! This is totally absurd! How
does the world expect teenagers to be able to feel good
about themselves if they are calling normal sizes plus sizes
when they're not! A person at 95 pounds it not fat! This
is the problem and this is why these poor young girls are
making themselves sick trying to look like the models who
are underweight! The models are not normal sizes and never
were! They are the ones who are underweight! They purposely
use skinny models so the clothes look better on them, but
it gives the wrong message to teens!

Do you really think the clothes look better on them? Most of the stuff they wear is hideous and it looks like it is being worn by sticks and dowels not people.

I think what is important to take away from this story is that she was being told that she was not thin enough and instead of trying to do what the industry she was in told her was right, she listened to her body and did what it needed. She gained weight and now feels good. She was saying in her interview that you have to be an individual and find what works for you. She is a successful model and she has curves and brea*ts and is beautiful, but next to the stick models she is on the runway next to she does look like a plus size. It's a shame really.

Size 12 is a plus size? Im like you on what planet...If that is true then maybe I am really fat or over fat.. I wear a size 16 and would love to be able to wear a size 12. I know that I would be in heaven at that size.. I would have told them too to take a hike. I agree no wonder we have diet problems with our teens..Great discussion..Have a good day...

I am a size 12 down from a 16 and working on a 10. I find it insulting that a 12 is considered a plus size.
I saw a size 0 on a rack the other day...it was down right scary. How could anyone that skinny even walk around.

Size 12 is a plus size for someone who is shorter than 5'9"... I guess... haha. I wear size 11, and I am only 5'5". The size should be appropriate or proportional to the height.

Weighing only 95 pds? And still wearing a size 12? If this is Plus size this is definately sending the wrong message and truly it is part of the reason why we see so many people out there with eating disorders, and being that skinny is not Healthy either. Personally I would never want to weigh only 95 pds. at 5'9. For me if I could get back to 165 I would feel most comfortable.

What the hell is wrong with the fasion industry? Don't women have enough pressure to deal with, without 95 pounds and a size 12 being a plus size? I don't think I've been able to fit into a size 12 since i was actually "12" (15 years ago LOL) Unbelieveable, and they wonder why women have body image problems. DANG!

I wonder what size or weight the fashion industry defines as thin or normal in terms of weight. Ninety five pounds at that height is not healthy in my perspective. And they are already considering this model as a plus size person?
One of the problems people have in terms of body image is the way commercialism incorporates on our minds that we have to look like paper thin people in order to become "in". I am from the Philippines and am a plus size person. And it is a problem for me to buy clothes because the extra large shirts that they sell here would probably fit my seven year old niece. When I would ask shop staff why the clothes sizes are so small, they would answer that the shop follows Asian sizes. I mean, are Asians really that small?
Its hard to teach healthy body weight when people are forced to starve themselves in order to fit in to clothes that are fashionably in season.

Not all asians are teeny tiny but many are. And it must be very frustrating to be in your position.

Size 12 and up is normal and I totally agree with you, 12 is not a plus size. It's just rediculous how the media thinks it is. If we could somehow change the media to portray the natural woman form I think it would be amazing because all sizes are beautiful. No one size should be made to be the ideal size.

The media makes normal looking women seem overweight. If an actress isn't a size 2 they have negative media coverage about their weight. in the industry a size 12 is considered plus size but in real life there are many who aspire to that weight. I was a 12 before I had daughter. Now the size can sometimes be too tight.

I know, I am a size 12 but my BMI is not yet healthy...but it is closer than it has been in about 10 years. I am aspiring to go down and was feeling pretty good about myself. Then I heard this and felt fatter.
