Do you visit the dentist only when you have a bad tooth or do you go regularly to check your teeth and get the necessary work done, such as fillings, polishing etc?
I hate going to the dentist and wait until the last moment when my tooth ache becomes too much to bear and even then I'd rather have it extracted than subject myself to a nerve filling, ugh! I can never stand the grrrrr of the drill and wince everytime it comes to my mind. "Open, shut, wash, spit out," on and on and on. you feel it's never going to end. What a relief when he says you can go now.
I know of many people who go regularly and get their teeth checked for cavities etc. and they don't even mind it. I also know of many like myself who hate going to the dentist. So how about you?

hi suesan35 I hate the dentist to...I've had 3 teeth pulled and 8 fillings.. now i have beautiful teeth never had braces and they are perfectly straight. one time they had to put 7 shots in my teeth that's because i was getting 3 filling that day so you will probably get like...2 they hurt at all.. however most dentist are going to quite sensitive as to to whether you are feeling pain. Anesthesia. works well and it works pretty fast... you"ll feel a little pinch from the shot but nothing extreme. after that you should really feel anything.. if you do just let your dentist know! happy mylottings

Hi jen: Is that you in the picture, I mean the profile pix. I can't see the teeth, but the smile sure looks nice. So all that pulling, filling and straightening has worked for you. By the way, how DO YOU let the dentist know he's hurting you, when he has sort of imprisoned your mouth in a way that you can't speak or cry out even. Thanks for your response jen, enjoyed it.

Hi suesan35
I only go to the dentist when my new teeth will grow (when I was child) and now I go to dentist to check for cavities. I don't like it, I hate to open my mouth for a long period. It's cold and the wind enter, makes me feel sick! Actually my family didn't have this habit, but since my mom had bad tooth ache, she doesn't want me to face that problem and ask me to go to dentist regularly My dad too, he has lost his teeth and start from that day he always remind me and my brother how important it is to visit dentist.. Thanks it's only once every 3 months!

Hi chrysanTflower. Guess dentist are a necessary evil and they do what they do cos its their job. I don't think its easy for them too, imagine looking into so many mouths daily, they must also get fed up of it. This discussion has put me in the correct perspective regarding dentists and now I must make a special effort to go the dentist taking into consideration everything that has been stated by myLotters. Thank for responding chrysanTflower and to all other myLotters too.

I'll be off to the dentist for my 6-month check on Thursday morning and the thing I dread most is the bill! Hopefully, I wont need any extras like fillings to up the cost. The last dentist we had didnt leave enough time for the injection to work so I could feel the filling... but couldn't feel the side of my face or my throat for about 2 hours after.

Hi wizzywig: The dentist bill also makes me wince. you're quite right there. I suppose your dentist had too many appointments and did a rush job on you. Hope you'll have better luck this time and go home with your teeth and your wallet safe in their respective places.

I too hate going to the dentist. I had a bad experience when I was young with a dentist and I have never liked to visit them since. I only go to the dentist when it is an absolute must. Just mentioning going to the dentist seems to make me nervous.

at the start when I saw everyone commenting they did not mind going to the dentist, I felt bad thinking maybe I was the only one who didn't like visiting the dentist. Now I'm relieved that its quite normal and laurenrich, I too become a nervous wreck when its time to go. thanks for responding.

I try and go about every six months. I do like my coffees so I need to have a clean by then. I hate my dentist though! He's a bit snappy, and it ruddy hurts when I have a clean - he could be a bit more gentle! NHS dentists (ie. cheap) are thin on the ground at the moment in the UK so I will have to stick with him for now. I wish I could afford to go private!

Hi crystaltips: At least you take courage into your hands and go. that's something So he's snappy is he? Why dont you snap back when he's got his fingers in your mouth, accidentally, of course so that'll he get a return of his treatment from his victims. Hope you'll find a better dentist soon.

I take my kids to dentist regularly. I want to make sure that I attend to their dental health as well. A lot of people take their dental health for granted. Little do they know that there are health problems that were rooted from bad dental health. Even heart problems may start from a bad tooth. So, it is important that to stay healthy we should also take very good care of what's inside our mouth.

Hello aprilten. You sound just like my teacher, but unfortunately even she could not get me to like the dentist although it was compulsory in school and we were dragged there whether we liked it or not. It was only after leaving school that teeth were neglected. Yes aprilten, I have heard about heart and other problems arising due to neglected dental care. Thanks for your advice and response.

Oh I go regularly and in fact I'm late and not happy about it because I can't afford it...no insurance. I absolutely hate it so i do understand where you are coming from. I went in finally when I need a lot of work done on back teeth and one root canal. This dentist worked with me and prides himself with being gentle. I shopped around for him. He even did a root canal that was relatively painless and has been good for over 15 years so far. All that and I still get so nerved up just going in for even a cleaning. Haven't had a cavity in years. I make him give me novacaine just to clean them. I just can't stand the metal on my teeth. He laughs but he does it. He sings (really bad singer) but he sings old rock tunes as he works. You just need to find the right dentist for you. I have 4 kids and none of them get this nerved up about the dentist as I do.

hi sid556. I'm so late in thanking you for the response, I was not well and did not come to myLot for a couple of days. Maybe you had a really bad experience that even you cannot remember. As long as you get the job done without much pain I suppose you're ok. Happy mylotting sid.

I hated going to the dentist when I was a kid. The thought of possibly having a cavity and having to have the tooth drilled and filled would just terrify me. Then, there was the flouride treatment, which was the type that was in a tray that I had to hold in my mouth for however long it was... it seemed like a long time. That stuff tasted so nasty!!
Now, though, as an adult, the trips to the dentist don't bother me.

thanks for responding lynnemg; most people seemed to have hated going to the dentist when they were kids, but got over it and they don't mind it so much now. Wonder why I haven't? Maybe having three, yes, three teeth extracted on the same day had something to do with it.

I also hate the dentist! I had my teeth filled one time and for 3 days, I can still feel and hear the drill drilling my teeth, and man, my teeth is quite sensitive and sometimes the anesthesia won't work. If I'm going to draw the inhumane contraptions, I'd draw the electric chair, gas chamber and dentist chair!

Hi Suesan,
I don't like going to the dentist either, and so when I became old enough to choose whether or not I wanted to go I chosen not to and stopped. I don't think I have been for the last 5-8 years maybe. I have the same mentality that you do. When something really gets painful then I will go and see him. But I don't like going there just be told that everyhting is fine, or that I will have to spend money and getting a filling. I would much rather wait until I know I need something. it is the same with the opticians (I only went when my one pair of glassses was being held together by tape), and with doctors (I only go if I am about to keel over lol!)
All the best,
Dranz

Hey, you and me we both think alike. I too should visit my eye specialist, but have not done so for quite some time, because everytime I go she will prescribe a more costly eye drop and order more tests and I don't think anything has changed much for me during the last 5-6 years. Same with doctors, quite casually, they write "...take these tests and see me in 4 weeks, or 6 weeks or whatever. What I think is, if the doctor thinks I can survive for 4-6 weeks and don't have to take those tests immediatley, why should I bother going to him just because he says so, when there's nothing radically wrong with me.? They'll hmmmm and hrrrr and make you nervous unnecessarily whereas, if you dont visit them, you forget that you have any sickness at all. If I collapse of course, I'm sure someone take me and thats a different thing. Thanks for your interesting response Dranz

i love going to the dentist. i go there twice a year to have my teeth checked, for fillings and for cleaning. i guess i love the clean mouth feeling after leaving the dentist. a lot of people hate going to the dentist because they're afraid of their dentist. i like my dentist because he doesn't scare/intimidate me. he's very friendly and he treats his patients very well.

You love going to the Dentist as in "You love chocolates" or something like that? wow. amazing. But goes to show how much the attitude of the dentist himself can change your perception of getting your teeth worked on. I wonder why dentist are not normally friendly. Maybe it has something to do with all those instruments, scalpels, pointy, nasty looking tools and their masked faces which does not give them much room to interact with the victims, (sorry I mean patients) Thanks alexaeluna, so nice to have a different opinion.

ha ha, join the club rochelV, just like me. I go to the dentist only when the pain becomes unberable and to add to the pain, you get a scolding from him too and that's even worse than the pain. that's how I had three teeth extracted on the same day. Now I've had permanent replacement teeth fixed, so its alright cos those can't decay, but there are other teeth, and I still don't go to the dentist regularly.Have fun rochelV
