if i were you, i would choose labrador retriever.they are very loyal pets unlike german shepherd and pitbull which are very easy to anger dogs..

Any dog can have a tendencay to be protective and loyal. German Shepherds are VERY loyal dogs, they LOVE the people who take care of them. And there is nothing wrong with a pitbulls loyalty either. No breed can be called unloyal....if a dog is taken care of and loved, they're going to be loyal and protective and faithful no matter what, large or small.

it's the dog. I have a half Shepard half rottweiler at least that is what the shelter told me. He is a good do and every thing but he is the biggest chicken I have ever seen. Pitbulls get a bad rap as being mean but its the dog and the way you raise it.

O! My area of expertise!!! :D I LOVE big dogs!!! And I am so sorry you lost your doggie! I know how terrible it is too lose a beloved pet... One you should really consider is a Great Dane. They usually get very large, but they are the GOOFIEST dogs ever! lol. And they can be very protective. One I've worked with before protected me from another dog that it thought was attacking me(it wasn't) lol. ***It was actually funny...the lab was pulling me by one arm of my sweater, so the great dane would grab the other side of my sweater and try to pull me back Then when he realized it wasn't working he would charge the lab and bark in his face! I had to hold off the Dane so he wouldn't hurt the lab, while being dragged around by my sweater! lol Anyways! :P Another dog you could get is a Great Pyrenese. They are BEAUTIFUL white fluffy dogs. And they can get very large. They are, as a breed, a generally protective animal, in fact some say they PREFER to have something smaller than themselves to protect Greyhounds!!! I LOVE Greyhounds!!! They are such beautiful, sleek dogs! :) And they can get pretty big too, I've worked with a few and I was surprised at their sizes. And they are SUCH sweet dogs! How great would it be to save an retired racer? That's my top three reccomendations for now :) Do you adopt your dogs from rescues or shelters? You should really check out www.bestfriends.com They have so many dogs, many of them large! And they provide great information on them. And I believe they adopt dogs out to anywhere in the USA.

Dauschunds are small but they bark alot. My dog is a mixed dauscund and terrier, with maybe a little beagle thrown in. He is a very good watchdog. He will bark any time he hears unsual sounds or sees something unusual happening outside. I think any breed that barks alot can be a good watchdog. You have to put up with some inanae situations though, where the dog barks at anything.

I prefer large dogs simply for the protection factor!!! The absolute BEST large, protective dog I've ever had was a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix. He was protective like the German Shepherd side & yet a sweet loving dog like the Golden Retrieve side. He followed me EVERY step I took & nobody came near me unless I told him it was OK. Other than that, he was a sweetie!!! The second best large dog I've had is a Black Lab. I now have a male & a female & find the male to be much more protective of my yard!!! Only problem with the Lab is they need a LOT of attention or they dig holes & chew anything & everything in sight!!! I'd give anything to have another Shepherd/Retriever mix!!!
