What kind of cold/flu gives you a sore and congested throat but no runny nose?

Hey all, I've been wondering if I even have a virus for the last three days. The first day, my throat was very dry and sore, and I had thought that I had carelessly left my mouth hanging open in my sleep. No biggie right? Frequently drinking water would help the dry feeling, and I'd feel largely better for awhile..although it'd always come back for that first day. The next day I felt pretty much better, no new symptoms...then I woke up yesterday with aching muscles (even though I have not been particular active and even exercises in hopes that'd help -- believing perhaps I'd been sitting too much), and today I'm coughing up phlegm -- but I have no runny nose! I can breathe just fine! I'm treating it by drinking lots of citrus. And I've had no fever -- I'm running a little warmer than usual (I'm typically more toward room temperature) but no fever. And I have been piling on the blankets at night, hoping to sweat whatever this is out. The rest of my family (minus one and our live-in guest) has now gotten sick with usual cold symptoms. Coughing to start, then sore throat, then runny noses. But me, to summarize; sore throat, coughing, no runny nose. And with the help of citrus I almost feel normal today. What could this be?

I have no idea what type of sickness this is, but have been experiencing it off and on all summer. I had simply chalked it up to a new allergy development. Taking spoonfuls of honey did seem to help my throat, and a daily dose of ephedrine for 3-4 days cleared up the phlegm. Unfortunately, I've been through this 4 times this season, so the "mama" cures were obviously temporary. Maybe one of the other members will know more about it and we can both find out without going to a doctor...that's not exactly my fave thing to do lol

hi paranoiax sounds to me like the plain old garden variety Flu bug because of the aching, colds dont make you ache all over but the'flu sure does and sometimes you run a temp and sometimes not/but its a virus and you are doing what you should for a flu virus. good luck and get better soon. acold would have a runny nose. flu often gives you a nasty old sore throat.
