Am I the only one who does this?.........................................

I have been leaving the television on for background noise for as long as I can remember. It keeps me company and entertains me. For the most part I am on the computer most of the time and listening to classic rock but the television is usually on as well in the back ground. Am I the lone ranger in this or do others dothe same thing? Do my fellow mylotters feel this is an okay thing or is there something psychological in it as well? Is it a problem or just a bad one to try to rid myself of?

I do this as well, when I get up in the morning, I press the button on my computer then the TV, its automatic..then when I am doing my housework I often have the TV on in the front room as well so I don't miss anything...I think it is a normal thing to do, years ago people would have the radio on all day so the only difference is we have pictures as well...perfectly normal...

My grampa would turn the radio on when he came out for breakfast and then gramma would turn it off soon after he went to work. Television was on around summer time and on until midnight or so when i was at my grandparents in the summers and when i was real small and leaving there. I think it is normal too and just whatever the preference is.

maybe it has something to do with not being alone or possibley you had kids and got accustomed to the noise. i do it sometimes but then if i havent listened to whats on or noticed it for a while, i start worrying about why im wasting electricity and turn it off its ok though if you can pay the bill i guess.

Gheez, I guess! If 50 plus have anything to say in this. It keeps us company. We are social animals. The more the merrier!

I have the TV on while I am on the computer and even have it on while I am cleaning my house it does keep you company. I have a small TV in my bedroom and I turn it on when I go to bed and set the timer so it will go off if I fall to sleep.

Nothing wrong with background noise... I do the same thing... yes sometimes it is nice to just sit in totally silence.. But after awhile the silence can start playing mind games... its just a comfort thing..

Ya, definitely something to be said for silence. But, it does get old.

Anytime I am home the TV is on. For me it keeps me company and breaks the silence. I tried having the radio or other music on but it is something about the movement on TV that works for me. Sometimes I will even turn the volume down and have music or something else going but I think for me it is having the movement going on. I can actually multi-task better if the TV is playing in the background.

Lately I've been able to keep the TV off, but I tended to be -just- like that.
It's not like I'm wasting more or less power, I use my computer to watch TV and it's already on 24/7, but I did kept it on (the TV) so that I could keep it on to listen to things and occasionally watch when I heard something that triggered more of my attention.
I don't think that there's anything wrong, it's an habit a lot of people have and some of them with even less of a reason.

i think that's completely normal, it happens to me as well and i think i watch tv more than you do. i also spend time with my computer as much as you do and i think that's what's important and nothing else you should do what ever you feel like and not like some psychological problem or anything.

No I don't really do this (perhaps its an age thing), but I prefer to work in silence most times, although I do sometimes have some internet music playing softly in the background. My children, though, never seem to now what silence is with tv or ipods blaring all the time no matter what they are doing.
I value silence - other peoples sounds are very intrusive, I have absolutely no wish to hear other people's music especially if they are traveling in a car with the windows open and the sound turned up full.

It can be good and bad. I also do it at proper hours, at leasy, and I do it just out of habit or for the feeling of company or that at any moment something interesting might come on TV. It's bad too though as it is a waste of electricity and you'll be paying more money for something you are not really using properly.

Oh, yes. I am trying to wean myself away from it and get into the quiet more because I know it is a waste of money.

Hi, I do the same too; most of the time, I listen to the movies and news, rather than watch them. It's only when it gets exciting, that I stop my work, and turn to watch the tv. I suppose the tv provides some sort of soothing background noises, entertaining some parts of my conscious/subconscious mind while I work away!

I do this too. I've done it for as long as I can remember. Before we moved to this house, the television was actually in the same room as the computer so I could glance over at the TV every now and then to see what was going on. Now, however, we have a dedicated office and the computer is in the next room over, the living room. I can't just glance at the television to see what is going on. However, when the television is on, it is very comforting to me, especially when everyone else in the house is asleep. It gives me a certain sense of companionship.

Guilty as well. Doing it as we speak. I feel as though I cannot work otherwise. I am rarely watching whats on it, but it must be on.

I do the same thing.... If I am home all day the television will be on all day... With no one barely paying any attention to what is on... If it is a bad thing or not? That is the question... Its something that I have been doing my whole life to me, its completely normal...
