How do you judge if you like/dislike a particular food? Taste? Smell? Look?

I have a friend who decides a food is good or not just by the look of it. I can never do that. I take the risk of tasting the food before judging whether I like it or not. I also have a friend who decidees by smell. I really don't think that look of a food will say the quality or taste of it.
What about you?

I agree with you on that one. In school in cooking class i have to make alot of foods that do not look that good, or smell that good. So i take the chance everytime and try it, it seems to awalys taste good. So don't go by look, or smell. Go by what it tastes like.

Usually I will at least taste most foods once before I decide whether I hate them or not. I do both though; look AND smell the food, and if it smells and looks terrible, then I may not try it and just pass on it. Usually I can tell by the smell of food if I will like it or not. Once at a potluck, someone had brought a bowl of something that was semi-liquid and gray and no one would try it but I decided to go ahead and taste it and it was delicious. That's where I learned you can't judge food by looks alone. I never really knew what that dish was though.

hi daliaj I judge whether or not I like a food by its color, its flavor and its texure if these are all off I will not eat it.
Also if it smeels nasty I wont touch it at all.all these senses
pretty much work together so you dont even realize you are using'them you just know if its good or not good.

One of my room mates also does the same. I am a person who downloads recipes during weekdays and try them out during weekends. I prepare new dishes with lots of excitement. It may not look good sometimes, but tastes very good (according to me). It is very disappointing that she says 'No' without even tasting a little bit of the food. What do you say if you were in my place?

hi daliaj,
i cane decide whether i like the food or not by it's smell itself. i have avery bad habit of slightly sniffing the food before i eat. my nose is very sensitive to food. y mom says we must not sniff food before eating but i have this habit and never take care to shun it.

I have seen some people sniffing the food before they eat. I think it is fine to do at home. I am sorry to say that I don't think it is a good habit to perform when you eat in a resturant or at a part. The problem is that if we do at home, we tend to do ouside the home also. I don't like it when somebody sniffs the food I offer. I don't do it; I better taste the food instead. Thanks for the response.

Wow, your friend sure have remarkable talent. I can't do that either, because in my experience food is about taste not about how it looks. Some food may have ugly appearance but actually delicious to eat, it really depends on the country's culture. In my country there is a black sausage which have really bad appearance but if eaten it has tremendously great taste. So my answer is absolutely the taste, the looks may be have slight effect on my appetite but I still have curiosity to put it into my mouth to feel the taste.

You are thinking exactly like me. I would like to take the risk of tasting and say 'No' if I don't like it. But, from the responses I got for this discussion, I understand that there are so many people who really sense the food using look and smell. My friend is not the odd one out. We also have lots of dishes which taste wonderful, but don't look good. Thanks for the response.

Yeah, like some old proverb "don't judge a book by its cover", but the cover of course hold important meaning to stimulate my appetite, but if I already known the taste I will not care more about how it looks, because it's delisious

i taste them before i decide if i like them or not. there are "ugly" looking foods that taste good. there are bad smelling foods that taste good. so i definitely have to taste them first so that i can decide.

Finally, I am happy to find a person who judges food based on taste and not on soemthing else. I also do judge by look sometimes, but that won't be the final decision. I totally agree with what you said. I won't leave a food only becuase of the reason that it doesn't have a good look or good smell. Thanks for the response.

I am surprised to see another person like my friend Asha, who decides on food by the look of it. I thought she was the only person in this world who does it. She used to stay with me. I am a person who is interested to try out new recipes. She said 'NO' to many dishes I prepared only because of the reason that they didn't look good. I used to decorate dishes before presenting to her. Thanks for the resposne.

I think I defiantly eat with my eyes first. Not saying that I wouldn't try other things, but I would probably eat the thing that looks the best first. Other sense though come into play to. I can't eat anything that smells bad. I just won't even go near it. If it smells bad, then it is defianlty going to taste bad. Otherwise I am usually game for trying things.

Hi daliaj,
I agree with you. I will tell you an example. When I was studying in plus two (pre-degree) there was a factory (near our college) for making some kind of bread. The smell was really wonderful and all of our class mates get mouth watered. Finally we decided to get the same and taste it so we collected money and purchase it. When we taste the same then only we realized that we did a great mistake by following the smell.
But sometimes the smell works with some kind of food not all types, I think.

I would go for taste because after all, it is food, not a decoration or a perfume. Of course, the presentation of the food does matter because it could whet your appetite, but I'm willing to taste food that doesn't look delicious because it might turn out to be delicious. As for the smell, well I could ignore the smell if the food is delicious, but there are limits. I would never eat something that smells rotten.

I think that I have to test the food with all my senses(excluding hearing and touch) but look of the food is the most important. When it looks good it makes you want to eat it.

It seems you are very particular about food and you want to test it with all the senses to make sure that the food it tasty and good before you start eating them. I think if I were your wife, I will be a little irritated if you taste the food with senses other than your toung and deny the food I offer. It seems your family is fine with what you do. That is good. Thanks for the response.

I think that tasting a food and if the food is colourful. I'm not picky but I don't like white sauces I find they just make the food taste too bland. I like a lot of spice in my food and garlic is just one of the spices I can't get enough of . My favourite kind of vegetable is tomato. I like the red vibrant colour. What about you? What's your favourite food, spice

I would rather have something based on the taste and flavor of the food. Unless of course its obviously rotten and smelly, then I will have to throw it out because of fear of getting sick from eating it. But fresh food I would like to taste than look and smell.

I have to taste it. It may look bad or even have a peculiar smell but the taste test is how I will decide. I may have to taste it more than once to really know if I will eat it some other time. I have found some foods that you have to aquire a taste for and they seem to taste better each time I try them. Some people miss out on a lot of good foods by judging them by their look or smell. I like to try different foods from different countries.

For me it's taste and smell, although I do know people who dislike foods based on the texture. My husband, for example, will only eat spinach if it's creamed and mixed into mashed potatoes.

I will always taste anything! If I find the taste bad, that is when I decide! Another big factor for me in deciding if I like a food or not, is the texture. Some foods feel terrible in my mouth, even if they taste great. Example: Watermelon. I love the tastes, but I hate the weird feeling in my mouth while I eat it.

I like to taste food to decide whether i am going to like it or not.
It is true that what is appealing to the eyes is appealing to the stomach but i also take the chance of tasting the food even if it is not looking good or served properly.

Generally i decide on a food when it gives out a good aroma. It is not necessary that a food tastes good if it smells good. Similarly a food may taste good without a good smell. But the looks are such that even if the food tastes and smells bad it can be made attractive by the way you garnish it. Appearance may attract people only later can they decide on the quality of the food. I can judge a food by the smell of the food and then like it.
