My stomach has been messed up for the past two week nows. I've gone to the doctors and they give me some meds but it didn't help so i went back and now i have to go for a cat scan on my abdomen on Wednesday and then after that depending on what it shows i guess i am going to another doctor for endoscopy so they can see my stomach. anyway, an hour before i have my cat scans i have to drink this stuff called barium? has anyone else taken that stuff? does it mess up stomach up after the cat scans or before? someone told me it makes you have to go to the bathroom real bad but the lady at the office said it shouldn't do that to you. have you ever had a cat scan? how long did it take? what was it for? did you get to keep your clothes on?

Hi Sameroad My husband had to get that colon screening and he had to drink a gallon of some kind of clear liquid that flushes you out so they can see whats going on inside. Now I have heard the term barium enema used not sure if thats what your doing doesn't sound like it though. I have never had a CAT scan but I have had an endoscopy done because I had a stomach problem that wouldn't go away it was this knawing feeling every time I ate something and even when I did eat . I lost 8 lbs before I said OK enough I gotta go see what this is so I finally went to the doctores they did the endoscopy and it turned out to be an ulcer so now I take Nexium which is great because it works like a charm! I am not on any type of restrictions as far as diet I just can't do the caffiene so now I drink only decaff other than that no problems and I only take the Nexium when I feel a slight flare up which is not very often at all I was wondering how come you have to get a CAT scan on your stomach first why can't they just give you the endoscopy where they stick the tube down your throught and look into our stomach to see whats down there? Then if they didn't find anything I would think CAT scan would be the next option. But I am not a doctor so in no way do I want to contradict the course of action your doctors are recommending to you. Good Luck Sameroad let us know how everything turns out :-)

A cat scan can take about an hour depending on what they want to see. The new barium will show up later that day or the next, I always make sure to eat active yogurt after I have taken it, to restore my digestive system. In the cat scan you usually will not have to shed you cloths, but if you do they will give you a gown, you know the ones that open in the back. All these test are inconvenient but not usually painful and if they can get to the source of your problem are well worth it.

I guess you've had your test by now, I hope it went well! I had to have one in May when I had appendicitis. The ER gave me that stuff and it made me a bit nauseous but I kept it down. Then the scan, I got to keep my clothes on and it went pretty fast. Unfortunately, my appendix came out the next day! The good news is that I don't ever have to worry about it again!

I had to drink barium for a test and it taste like liquid chalk. It's hard to get down and take your time drinking it. I think the barium that the person told you about was for a barium ennama - pleasant as those are. LOL I hope you come out on your tests okay. I've had ulcers since I was in my yearly teens and know how much trouble they can be. Good Luck.
