Hi friends,
I am using Avast Antivirus.. At first it was fine but now it really makes me think about changing the antivirus.. It slows my pc, moreover it was not able to find some viruses.. I feel like this because my system acts like a alien system for the past few days..Everythin looks completely different right from the moment i logon and till i shut it down... What do you all think, Should i go for anything else other than a antivirus or just changing the antivirus is fine..
Pls dont tell me to change the pc though ;)

I have been using Avast for a while now and it is really good. a friend of mine who is a master mind when it comes to Comp related stuff recommended Avast to me.
I have Avast AV and Commodo Firewall. Apart from this I use, Malwarebytes' Anti malware. I run Malwarebytes' twice every week or when I suspect that something is not right. But honestly, since I installed Avast and Commodo, I have never had any malware issues. May be you have some malware issues. Try running what "stormragetz" or I recommend, before changing the AV.

I tried Malwarebytes before, but it was not able to find anything harmful(atleast from my point of view) from my system, it just gave me warnings about the broken links, so and so... well i think i can try on Stormragetz later on... but can u tell wts that about..

It is possible that your system is acting that way because malwares that Avast can't detect have been lurking on it. It is a fact that there's not single antivirus which can detect every type of malware present today so it is always safe to have one or two others for backup. As for me, I use Windows Defender (of course)and AVG and run them almost everyday. I also have Malwarebytes just to make sure I am not missing out any malware. I also have Adaware and SPyware Blaster installed for added portection. These are what keeps me off from known malware infested sites and lastly I have Spybot to detect rootkits that are usually not detected by ordinary antivirus, especially the free ones. Even with all of these, I still don't feel safe so I have to regularly scan my system for any thing that may still be hiding somewhere. There are also some minor stuff I have installed on my computer like the AdBlockPlus (a Mozilla Plugin) to keep my system free from unwanted and harmful stuff. But the most important thing to do of all is to regularly update all of them because it is pointless to have them all installed and running but none can actually function well because there's practically new malwares appearing everyday that they can't detect if they aren't upgraded.

hi calai,
sorry to ask, but isnt using these many softwares slowing down your pc.. I guess, with 1GB ram am using, I wouldnt be able to run these many processes at a time without slowing my pc.. and ofcourse I understand the risk of keeping these softwares out of date and I do update them for every week, if not everyday..

Hmm.. well as per my knowledge avast is good free antivirus software.. but when some danger viruses come which hit your system files at that time avast/avg/other free antiviruses fails.. I think to install norton or mcafee is the best solution for any system. as norton and mcafee both giving best security solution..

Well you maybe right. nevertheless, you cant get Norton/ mcafee for free right.. How best the anti-virus could be, you still gonna get attacked by some virus and so i feel there is no point in puttin our money for a good antivirus.. sorry

Yea i thinking abt changin my antivirus.. atleast for a few days and get back with this avast... To be honest, now i am so used to Avast that i was not ready to go for any other software... but my system needs some change of anti-virus as i feel that the virus now i am facing has targeting the anti-virus installed in my machine and needs a good anti-virus which is really immune to attacks on to itself first...

hi hatley,
I used AVG 8 at first but it was not able to detect some viruses my pc had especially the viruses that targets the removable devices connected to the pc.. Thats why I changed to Avast from AVG.. now no turning back, I feel Avast performance is fine but yes, it makes the pc very slow

I am also using Avast Antivirus. This is because I have read reviews for the best free antivirus software, and Avast came up top. I am also quite satisfied with its performance.
Are you using the latest Avast Antivirus? If yes, you can try 'Adaware', a software that sniff out malware and virus too. I think it is pretty good, a must have for every computer.
You might try Norton as it is still one of the better ones in the market, but it is still criticized by many for slowing the computer. You might try the gaming version of Norton Antivirus, which is more lightweight.
Good luck on your computer!

It have become slow cause ur hit by a virus or lot of unwanted files in ur system
Most importantly follow this steps
Use latest orginal antivirus
Keep it upto date
Schedule for update & alos virus scan daily
Most most importantly use the trusted sites only and dont download and install files in ur system from some spam/fishing sites.
Use trusted site only & have browser control like macafee u can use which blocks untrusted sites

Hi
I have lot of files in my system but I just couldnt ignore any thing because I use all my softwares atleast once in a 3days time.. As for us keeping the Antivirus upto date, I do all the things you have mentioned quite regularly.. though i keep myself online most of time, i wont download anything except for the few software that i need, that too from a trusted site... So, I just dont think your precautions help me out on this issue...

i have avira antivirus installed on my laptop. some it guy installed it. i don't know if it's doing a great job or not. sometimes a pop up window comes up telling me that this file seems harmful blah blah. then there are choices as to what i want to do with it --- ignore or quarantine or etc
i don't think avira slows my laptop down. i am just not sure if it's one of the best or if it's highly recommended. i forgot to ask the it guy.

I used the Grisoft AVG Free product until last year when a family member was hit with doozy of a virus called "Antivirus 2009". The family member actually loaded the software herself thinking it was genuine.
The only free/trial antivirus/spyware software that identified the problem was the free version of Webroot's product "AntiVirus with SpySweeper". All the others would begin scanning the EXE file and just hang the PC. I had used SpySweeper in the past but dropped it for AVG Free. When I saw how well it cleaned this pain of a virus I uninstalled AVG and bought three copies of the Webroot software - two for me and one for my relative.
