Need some help here, dear Gardeners

This year, I have a grape crop, like I have never seen before, and they are just starting to ripen....but it's getting late in the season, nights are cold, and the Pilated Woodpeckers are eyeing my crop, daily...so, too, other feathered friends! Can I pick the green grapes & ripen them in my greenhouse, or will they spoil? Don't worry...there is enough for me, and 1/2 of Canada's birds! Second part of question,....nearby there is an errant Walnut tree. The husks are still green..but the crows have already started picking them (they drop them on the paved road next to the tree to break them)! Can I pick my share whilst green, and ripen/dry them...also! Thanks for all your advice...and Cheers!

You are so lucky to have grape vines and have fresh grapes. To protect them from the birds you could get some bird netting to cover your vines. You could also get one of those plastic owls and set it near the vines. I've seen people putting alumin pie pans or old cds in the gardens to keep the bird away.

I am happy and thank you. I just remembered something else that might help. A piece of green plastic hose or a plastic snake. I have seen plastic snakes at the Dollar tree. birds try to avoid snakes.

Thank you...dear dee, for the good hints. Amazingly, the day that I posted this discussion, the grapes were not near harvest color. Two days later, they were wonderfully ripe, still some left for me, so I harvested about 30 pounds (which Ifroze) and there must be at least another 100 pounds left, for my dear feathered friends, to have a party with! And give me another laugh. So happy, all is good with you...just missed you here! Cheers!

I think, but do not know, that the grapes will not ripen in the green house, but the black walnuts will. I guess you mean black walnuts. I do not know what the other ones look like when they grow.

Oh boy, dear GardenGerty, now you have got me going...are they Black Walnuts..or not? When it comes to plants, I'm good at indentificaton, but not great at trees, fruit/nut bearing trees. Does Black Walnut mean the shells are really dark, as these walnuts, are the traditional color you see when buying mixed nuts at Christmas. The beigey/brown colored ones! Truly, this is a time of the year when I wished I did have a Video Camera! There is a ton of berries here for a Grand Buffet for the birdies, etc. And they do tend to overindulge (like a lot of persons, we know)! When the nights get cooler, the sugar content rises, & when the sun shines during the day...they ferment! It's kind of comforting to know that human beings..AREN'T the only ones that over-indulge in a good thing! Nice to hear from you..and have a great weekend, dear friend! Cheers!

Thank you, dear GardenGerty, I followed your advice, collected about 10 pounds, and yes, they were a bit of a challenge....to hull, but not more so than the Oysters, we get. The work was surely worth it...WOW...what a tremendous flavour! Nary a comparison to one's from store shelves! Thanks for the info, truly appreciate it....have a rainbow day..and Cheers!

Hey...violet...thank you for responding. Good news, when I wrote the discussion, it looked like FALL had arrived overnite. Cold, rainy...but for only three days, we are now in the midst of what we call "an Indian summer" cool nights, but wonderfully sunny days! The grapes all ripened (the cool nights upped the sugar content)...YUMMY! I gave away about 50 pounds, dehydrated about 5 pounds, and at least another 100 pounds has been made into juice, concentrate, which I froze, and it is so GOOD mixed with Soda Water...or the effervescence of 7-UP! I also made some jam & jelly. Best crop I have had in 30 years...and they are tremendous eating, too! Walnuts, I followed GardenGerty's advice, and have about ten pounds, am so thrilled about that, as they are really expensive here! Have a sparkling day....and HUGZ to baby! Cheers!

Hello pergammano, I am in no way a gardener but am familiar grapes and almonds if the latter is in any way a similar thing in growth to a walnut. My friend has a large olive net, or you could use plastic sheeting, to catch the nuts as they fall on the ground and many have fallen early and ripen on the ground, so I would imagine the walnut would be similar. My suggestion with the grapes may sound a little odd but it is one I do each year as I'm given too many ripe grapes to eat at once. I freeze them, then eat them from frozen like grape sweets. They are delicious that way but need to be eaten before they defrost otherwise they just end up soggy. So by the same token you could also use up a surplus of fresh grapes in a granita.
