Bad spelling?

How much does it bother you that people type so poorly on the internet? It's obvious that some people aren't entirely uneducated, but, why do people insist in writing so poorly at the computer when they wouldn't do it with their hand writing. It's already easier and quicker by default, yet people keep skipping letters or rearranging them in incomprehensible orders. Are you annoyed by this? Are you capable of reading their messages always and without issues?

A lot of people don't spell check or the spell check messes up because the word used does indeed exist. If you write with your hand it's generally slower and you watch what you are doing by following your hand along. On the computer it's just quickly typed out, that's it. Btw, here on mylot you'll find lots of people where English is a second language (myself included). Therefore, you'll more likely encounter misspellings and grammatical errors. The only time I'm annoyed is when people excessively and intentionally use texting abbreviations. It's not like we have a character limit here.

The latter point was my case. I mean, the message I read and just about every other I could see in the user's profile was plain "texting language" but even more garbled, that it just made me want to pull my hairs off. The spell checker is obviously useless for him/her since there's not one single correct word there, and as to the people who don't have English as their primary language I can totally understand because I'm on the same boat and even though I have people flattering me that they didn't knew I was Portuguese until saying so, I have my obvious flaws. But this was just inadmissible. Not one single word on that was correct. Although, now looking back at this and many other things, I do wonder why some people bother to participate on English using forums when it's a secondary language for them and they have both a poor grasp on the language and some times a hate for it enough to warrant them to not want to improve themselves. Maybe it's not the case here, but, there's surely some myLotter out there who's just "trying his best" for the money.

Quite a debatable topic. I am personally against such flaws, like misspelt words, jumbled letters, poor punctuation, bad grammer etc. especially on the internet. It reflects on one's personality, I feel. It shows a reckless and care free attitude. It also shows lack of professionalism. It is for sure, annoying many a times. I think, one has to be specific and right on the internet, upto the extent of doing justice for their own conscience.

Haha. I'm not exactly sure about the part about doing justice for their own conscience, but I can surely see what you mean. Well, it's just that it's tremendously aggravating to see that people just don't seem to care if they are well understood or not, or... I don't know. Maybe they believe that they are getting their message through loud and clear because somehow they can perceive through their half garbled messages, or fully in the case I witnessed here in myLot that almost made me want to pull my hair off.

it does not bother me much, for i know every once in a while everyone of us had misspelled something, and just like you said there are others who are not educated. but there are others who also tries to practice to write in English. English is not my native language so i know that i am not perfect, i also misspell some words and sometimes the grammar is not good too so i know that can be understandable. it is more annoying if that is their native language and still they misspell it.

Like I replied to another post, I could understand somewhat if these were people with poor education or if it was the occasional typo or grammar flaw, but, in this case I'm talking about people who make entire posts with probably not one single word written correct. "Why"s are "y", "college" is "coll", "friends" is "frns" or "frnds". Essentially, "text language", on a place that has no character limit per post whatsoever. What's their objective!? I suppose that with some effort it can be understood, but some things just feel like they can have so many meanings, it's really like trying to decipher a new language at times. Also, it makes difficult to imagine these are entirely uneducated people since they did find their way around the internet, finding a socialization site, register and started posting. They don't seem that dumb, just incredibly lazy. But, thank you for your reply.

You're actually ok... it's easy to understand. I mean, at a glance, I see a "i" that should be a "I", maybe one letter or so off, and your grammar may be a teensy bit off, but you're still easy to read. Other people can't have one single word correct though. It's misspelled word after misspelled word. Kind of like "i wnt to b frnds wit u". That's.. that's just terrible. Thank you for the comment, and keep up the good work. You're surely better at English than apparently a few native speakers.

Thank you bringing this up. A thumbs up for you (^_^) b I'm always annoyed by the fact that people can't spell things properly when they're on the computer. A few is understandable, but a lot I just can't stand. Browsers and Word-like software have built-in spell checkers already, so there's no reason to have so many misspelled words. And what I really don't like is that there are some people out there that do it on purpose. I also don't like it when people spell words "WiTh EvErY oThEr LeTtEr In CaPsLoCk." I mean, what's the point of that?

These are things that entirely escape me... but can't be avoided anymore. People settle in so much with that that half the community thinks it's ok to do that... that's ok to type like some impaired person that really has some serious shortcomings or similar. And things that take even more work like one capital letter, one not, then I -really- can't understand, because they're surely not making themselves an any easier life. Sometimes I think people should take a literacy exam on the computer before being allowed on the Internet, and then have regular checks or something, lol. And, thank you for your comment.

got it all the time. :) sometimes it's irritating. but even after that misspelled word, the important thing is you remembered it was not correct and became aware of it. sometimes, i let it pass coz this is supposed to be for fun. might learn from it but am not taking it heavily. enjoy. :)

The problem is when it's not just one misspelled word, but all. You don't even have to... recognize the problem, you -know- it's there, throughout the whole message. Unfortunately I can't recall the user name of who posted the garbled message that led me to start this discussion, but I'll be sure to give an update if I stumble on it again so that people can try to perceive any of its messages.

Yes it annoys me! When spell check is so readily available, either people are to lazy to use it, or they just don't care! I usually give a minus for those people, and another thing is people writing and using text! Lazy people deserve the minus as far as I'm concerned! tdemex

These are probably people using "text language", yes, which is why I think it should be punished and have these people struck with lightning or something. Well, maybe I exaggerate. The reason why people who all those shortenings and don't care for spelling much in the text messages sent over phone does have a reason, since some of those systems seem pretty cumbersome (I hate texting) and characters are limited. But why do people keep doing this in a bloody forum!? They surely have no character limit (or at least a tenth as small). WHY!? Why must they make -my- eyes bleed. And then I'm not sure why they protest if someone complains at their posts. But, anyway, thank you for your post.

Yes I can still read misspelled words and those with typographical errors. Human brain can still read words even if the letters are jumbled as long as the first and the last letter is in their correct position. I cannot blame other people if they sometimes misspell some words. Maybe they are just focusing much on what are they going to answer and share with regards to the discussion. But of course it would be better if we can eliminate or at least lessen our bad spelling as well as grammar. There are also times wherein I cannot understand others response on my discussion because I cannot comprehend on what they are trying to say.

The problem here is not when they make a typo by accident. That happens with all of us; I'm incredibly prone to that which is why it's good I keep a dictionary add-on in Firefox. The problem is moreso when the "rule" of the first and last letter in place stop applying, with the letters on the middle aren't just misplaced, but when people plain and simply steal letters altogether from it and mash up the rest. When not only they do this with one word but every, single, one from their whole message! Sure, you can still perceive them, but then it's almost like if rather than english we're all using l33t speak. Thank you for your reply.
