I was surprised to learn that my soon to be daughter in laws mother uses dial up on her pc. I remember when I started using a computer that was all that was available and it was such a pain. I remember the 'ping' noise so well...lol. I had kids who were not into computing at the time and all the arguments about using the phone. I ended up staying up after they went to bed so I could use it in peace.
Do you still use dial up? Do you know other people who do as well?

My daughter in laws mother lives in Maine...if you know where that is...also in the "boonies" and she has dial up. She always complains that it takes so long to do anything!

There are plenty of people who still use dial up. For some it is not a priority to upgrade and for others it is a question of finances.

I agree with you. For I knew there were 2 people I work with still using dial up at home. I just question why won't they simply switch to DSL, only cost a little more than dial up. Why not pick the later.

For some people even a small increase in the monthly expenses is too much.

My parents used to until about a year ago. Even they surrendered. There are some little towns in Western Massachusets, where I live, that don't get highspeed because there are no power lines. Where I live, we get it, but we only have one provider. According to the cable company that provides this service, you have to have all these crazy T.V. channels that I never watch to qualify for highspeed internet. One of my assistants gets highspeed but doesn't have all the channels. Maybe tomorrow when I'm home taking a period related day off I'll call Charter and see what's going on.

I know someone in Maine who can't get highspeed because of the same reason. NO power lines. She hates it.

HAHA! That crazy dial-up tone has a rather nostalgic place in my heart, as strange as that may seem. I remember the very first time I stepped sheepishly into the wild world of the Internet. For me, that was truly a life-changing moment;)

I do. It's the only thing available in my area other than satellite. I've heard that satellite costs more than DSL or cable, yet it's not as fast. As much as I'd love to have a faster connection it just doesn't seem worth it to me. So, I guess I'm stuck using an ultra slow connection, for now.

Hi,
I do not use dial up any more. I did for the longest time though. Mainly I used it because it was so very much cheaper and it was all I could afford. I had an AOL disc for a months worth of free internet and everytime I called to cancel it rather than get charged, they gave me another 3 months. This went on for nearly 2 years. Yes it is slower and it did make it impossible to call on our landline but we worked it out. I now have hi-speed through our cable company and I can't imagine going back to dial up. I would though, I guess if I had to. In some of the smaller towns there is no hi-speed and the only option would be dial up.

I have never used a dial up for my internet connection. As you can see, here in our are, there is no telephone line available. So my phone is wireless. It cannot be use for dial up internet connection. When I first had my internet connection, its actually a wireless broadband. It is quite fast. Up until now, I am still using such connection for my internet.

I do not use dial up anymore.I used to use it when we got our computer. It used to make a lot of noise. There were also times where it never used to connect with a good speed. Also there used to be disconnections when a person picked the phone. Now i am having broadband from my phone service provider. My uncle still uses dial up at his place with a wireless modem. The speed is very irritating but i have to wait patiently to finish work.

As for me, I don't use it anymore we were using it like 5 years ago when DSL wasn't available in our place. Although, dial-up is a good back-up if in case your DSL service goes haywire. Like you said, dial-up is not very convenient but can be a life saver sometimes if in case you need to do something important and your DSL or cable internet isn't working.

Hey,
I actually think that no one uses dial-up anymore, because it is just too slow. I think that they should honestly give away free dial-up to the people who just can't afford and internet connection, that would be really good. Make sure you have a good day, God bless and Happy Lotting!!

Oh yeah, plenty of them. 2 of my co - workers, unbelievable they told me that they are still using dial up service. I just couldn't imagine that still exist. And the dial up still cost them $13 per month. I would rather add $10 more to have my DSL service. It won't cost such pain.

My grandmother still used dial up. For her its because of cost. She only uses it to check her emails and she really only does that once in a while. If she ever wants something printed out we do it for her on our computer.
For her uses it works ok

I could not function online myself if I had to go back to that speed!
My mother still has a dial up connection and it drives me mad when I use it while staying with her! She has to run an phone extension line down the hall and into the bedroom where the computer is as there is no phone point in the room too!

This would have been the case around a month a half ago,the condition of my attitude towards the usage of the internet was getting lost. The excitement and fun would have ended if I have kept on dealing with the dial up net connect, the thing was I would have to wait for it so long, to check my mails,my friends would make fun of me for the dial up's use because most of them have the faster nets. The things changed when I switched to a faster one and these days I suggest them good websites for all.
The dial ups also gave a tension in the back of the head since it had rent for per hour.

Actually, there are times that we try to use dial up at home. But now, it's really hard to connect that most often than not we just don't use it anymore and would prefer to use the prepaid broadband or some would get a dsl. I remember the sound of it connecting and was really irritated when you cannot connect. But, I guess there are those people who still use the dial up because there are many available internet cards being sold.
