This morning I was rush going to Walmart try to get a book cover for my daughter. Found the book cover and brought it to cashier to pay for it. There's only one person in front of me, an old lady, and the cashier already done bagging her items. And she took out her check book and start writing down to pay for her items.
Gosh, it took about 7 minutes until she's done, and unfortunately it's only one cashier open that early.
Here another sample from the commercial

It's pretty funny if you watch it.
These days it's not so many people using the check book anymore. Specially when you shop and there is long line just to do the check out. Using the check, will definitely hold up the line.
Do you or do you know anybody still doing this?

With the way the banks are set up now you don't have to write those checks. You get the debit card or some banks call it check card. I barely use checks. I surely don't use them when I am shopping. It takes way to long to write it out and then you have to wait to get it approved their the system that approves checks..I know we like to never got my mother in law to stop writing those checks. But she has and now using her debit card...

You people are sure lucky, because walmart, accepts checks. Here in India, no establishments accepts checks and it is either the Debit or the Credit card.
Coming to your point, it always happens, there will be only person before you in the queue and either this person would be buying provisions for the next six months at a single go or else the approval for his credit card will take ages.It always happen when you are in a hurry.

I am the evil check writer. bwa ha ha
But I do try to speed things up by writing the payee and the date while I'm still in line, so all I have to write are the amounts and my signature. Doesn't take more than a minute.
Apparently speeding people through is important to some folks though. There was another discussion on the same lines except it was about people who count out the correct change...

We very rarely use our check book anymore. We've actually gone to paying the greatest majority of our bills online through the companies and as far as shopping in general, we use our debit card to pay for what we owe. There is one of our utility companies that doesn't allow a customer to pay online and it really drives me insane. I would much rather be able to go online and pay the bill when it is convenient to me than to have to go to the place and pay them in person.
The one exception to the rule about not writing checks when we are shopping is when we are buying a large ticket item that is more than our maximum daily limit for our debit card. In this situation, the only way that we can pay is by using the check book.

yes, there are still a number of people using checks for payment. i favor using checks as payment of some important bills but unluckily, i closed my accounts years back.
paying in checks gives me a personal assurance and proof that payment was received although it does to in the case of debit/credit cards.
the only problem is ... most establishments/stores here do not accept personal checks for paying for groceries or merchandise. they prefer cash and debit/credit cards maybe because payment is more assured than personal checks. in personal checks, store owners still have to deposit and wait for the check to be cleared while paying outright in cash is secured money already.

I use the checkbook only to pay a few bills that I cannot pay online. It is better to pay with the debit card. In fact, it is better to use the debit card like a credit card if it has the credit card logo. That way, you do not use your pin code and if there is a problem, the bank gives you the same guarantee as for credit cards.

I don't know who where I live (Canada) would still accept cheques. Maybe stores in small communities where the owner knows you personally. Certainly in department stores, grocery stores, gas stations etc. it is either cash, debit card or credit card. I also pay my bills electronically and very seldom use a cheque. Usually I use a check to pay a tradesman like a plumber or electirican who did repairs to my place. But then he comes personally to collect his money and knows my address, so if something would go wrong with the cheque he would be able to trace me.

I only use checks for paying the rent because I have to send it in the mail and it is to a person and not a company so no automatic bill pay there! Once in a while, if I have the pharmacy delivery my medicines, I do use a check then too but other than that, everything is done by debit card.

never did. i guess it's a hassle thing. one of my land ladies before issued me a cheque for my deposit fee and it took me sometime to cash it out. i guess i can only remember the times that i did that -- twice.

A lot of shops in the UK won't accept cheques anymore. My bank won't send me a new cheque book even though I have requested on about 6 times in the last year! They are trying to stop people using them, but sometimes you still need them, for paying for things by post.

Hi ibuemma,
Not at all, Its really waste of time to fill up the check and pay. why we need to do so?? Now we are having Debit cards, Credit Cards from which we can pay with in a sec. so why to waste time in this check book. I am not at all using check book for paying more. Only Debit card or ready cash to pay

The discussion is new to me as we did not use the check book here even in Walmart, how to use it and why only the oldies will use it? Hehe~~We always use cash, debit card and credit card to pay when we come to the retailor. I can understand the feeling that when you are in such kind of rush and others play no sight on that and they still keep slowly and even on purposely. LOL...But If I am rush the time, I will talk to the oldies politely to allow me first and I assumed that she could feel guilty and let you go first.

No, I don't. The problem for me was that I could never remember when I wrote a check to someone so I would overdraw my account especially when they didn't cash it right away. Now I use debit card or cash. Debit card is preferable for me because cash is hard to handle with my mobility impairment. With the card all I do is swipe it and the money comes out of my account right away so no one can forget to cash it for months and leave me screwed.

A lot of people in Trinidad do. My company pays everything with a cheque but I guess that's business.
Sure enough, loads of people use credit cards here but lots still write out cheques also.
