Have You Tried Freelance Writing?

I'm curious. Has any of you tried or are even pursuing freelance writing as a source of income whether extra or main? I've been writing freelance for almost two years now. I'm working through middlemen, although my friends and colleagues who are working at oDesk are advising me to try the hourly rates so I can earn more. I'm hesitant about that, because the only reason I work through middlemen is because it gives me the freedom over my time. I don't want to work hourly the same way I do with regular employment. So how about you guys?

oDesk and GetaFreelancer are very good sites to start with. Most of my friends are in there, and I think this is where my middlemen get my assignments for me. There are a lot of freelance jobs there, not just writing, so you have a lot to choose from. Again, the sites are oDesk.com and GetaFreelancer.net. Good luck, hope you find the job that you are looking for. Cheers~

There are a lot of sites online that offer jobs, but I have only been writing for Helium and Associated Content. That way, I write when I want to, not to any set schedule. I think it works best for me. Next I want to explore Constant Content, as I have heard a lot of good things about them. Eventually I would be happy to move into more challenging work, but I don't like the feeling of deadlines breathing down my neck. It works great for some people, but I like more flexibility. Also I like choosing the subject matter. What do you usually write about...or are you working to assignments?

Hi there! Yes, as much as I would want to have flexibility, the need to earn money for upfront payments is too great that I can't leave writing for middlemen since it earns me more money. if I'm working for residual payments maybe I could try writing for those sites you mentioned. I write just about anything. it really depends on what topic is popular in the Internet these days. Those are the topics that make up my assignments. Thanks for replying. Cheers and good luck~!

I currently do freelance writing as a source of income and have for the past three years now. I make decent money when I work. I set my own hours and work only when I want to. I write for Associated Content, Demand Studios, and ehow.com. They are decent paying sites. I like writing and love how I can work only when I want to. Especially since sometimes I have trouble concentrating and can't write. I'm sure if I put more effort into it, I would make a lot more. :)

Wow that is cool. Working in those websites and succeeding in them is something I've never tried. The articles I write there don't seem to catch any attention and I've stopped altogether, preferring to concentrate on my middlemen work.

I write and submit articles on a few sites, but as for freelancing, I can't say that I have gained enough confidence in myself to go that route quite yet. I am a pretty good writer, but I think I need to do a bit more practicing before I go into freelincing.

You're already freelancing because you don't have a boss. Hey, if you've had enough experience with web-friendly articles you can do it! Try it, I can assure you'll make it good. Cheers~

I am not sure I would want to work hourly as a writer but then again it would probably still be better than some wage an hour job I had no interest in. I suppose it would depend on the number of hours and what the rate was. I wouldn't do it full time because that isn't freelancing and doesn't give the same flexibility. Is middlemen a website?

Yes that's why I take up middlemen because they are more flexible while giving me steady loans of assignments.

Middlemen are freelance writers that take a lot of assignments and then pass it on to their subordinates... Anyway yeah being forced to do it for a fixed number of hours is not freelancing anymore. That is why I've avoided writing for hourly jobs. I want to enjoy a bit more flexibility while still earning money. I work only 3 hours a day, btw.

Three hours per day? I would LOVE to work three hours per day writing and be able to make a real living at it. That would be awesome!

I only started freelance writing a week or so ago, and I've already made over $10.00. I got a job through GAF and although the pay doesn't seem all that impressive, I kinda enjoy honing my writing skills so I'm happy to be doing it for extra cash on the side. I wouldn't work hourly either, because I'm doing freelancing BECAUSE I get to manage my time (I'm a full-time student). I love it...although when I have to churn 8+ penny articles on the same topic, it gets a little tedious towards the end. But it's easy money (for me at least) and I think it's a much better way to procrastinate than just surfing the web. :)

Hi there. It took me awhile to notice that someone has replied to my thread. Thank you, by the way. Yes, I agree. Sometimes it can be very tedious especially if you're writing big articles like say, 750-1000 words. But it can be fun sometimes though. It's why I've stuck to this kind of work for so long now. My freelancing life turns 2 next year, in February. Cheers~

I'd never have the patience to write the big articles. I mean, I start getting bored around the 500 word mark sometimes so it's unlikely that I'd ever consider taking on a large writing project of more than 500 words. I'd only take something like that on if I didn't have to do a lot of research on the topic (i.e. I already knew quite a bit about it). I find that knowing some background information on the topic that you're writing on makes the word count climb SO much faster!

i did, several years ago and was writing non fiction. i had this gig where i was paid about $10- for a 500 word piece. now, most sites only give you a couple of dollars for 500 words. its just not worth it anymore.

Wow! $10 for 500 words? That's ten times more than what I earn now! Well maybe now it's because the demand is so high that there are a lot of writers, and they have to be competitive with their prices.

I'm trying to do some freelance writing. I couldn't get my resume to upload in the right format for Odesk. I really wanted to do it. What's with this middlemen you speak of? Please, by all means fill me in. I gotta do something quick.

I found my middlemen through Craig's List. These are people that are freelance writers themselves, and accept a lot of assignments. They then assign them to people like me. I don't talk with the client, they do. I haven't tried odesk yet, though, honestly. Cheers~

I submit articles to Helium for exclusive rights and earn both upfront and passive income. At least I get to retain the rights to the articles, and can repost in other writing sites. I prefer this form of freelance writing, since I can write whenever I want, and do not have to worry about payment. Helium and AC are legitimate writing sites. I understand the payment method and can decide on how much I want to make in a month.

that's good scheng1. Every writer wants flexibility to exercise his creativity after all. Glad to know you're earning good at Helium and AC. More power to you my friend. Cheers~

The freelance writing work I do varies and each type has its positives and negatives. Article writing sites I can work for when I have the time and I can earn from past articles and with freelance sites I am tied to a schedule and to deadlines but they pay better. You just need to choose which best suits you and the time you have available and you aren't tied to any particular site, you only need to bid on freelance projects when you know you have the time to complete them.

I agree, it really depends on what you're comfortable with. I am not comfortable with being governed hourly, but I am okay with deadlines as long as I have the flexibility to start at what I feel comfortable with. Like I said, I don't want to work hourly because of that. It's like working like a regular employee. Cheers~

I do freelance writing. There are a lot of freelance opportunities in the Internet these days. It just takes you to decide which one you're interested in and which ones you have the most skill for. yes, it's very much unlike an 8-hour job. I basically work only three hours a day at least, and only 4 hours at most if I have a lot of projects to work on. The best thing is, I'm free to start my working hours any time I want to. Heck, I can even drink while working lol. Cheers~

i'm a newbie freelance writer. i am only 2 weeks old. so far, the workload is okay. one of my employers requires only about 5 300-word articles a day. the other sends me assignments every 2 days (3-5 250-word articles). that's why i'm thinking of applying to more freelance writing jobs.

that's a good start. that was how i begun in this business as well. I once peaked at 5 clients, but it stressed me out so I reduced it to 3 so I can still have time for myself and be able to pursue other hobbies. Good luck, my friend. Freelance life is very exciting. Cheers~
