Off topic and irrelevant responses

September 16, 2009 2:51am CST
I often see people making comments to discussions that are not relevant to the subject or along the lines of "No I've not done that". Presumably they are just putting in any sort of comment just to earn a cent or two. What do people think about this? Should such off - topic responses be reported or just ignored? Personally I find them annoying, but I'd just ignore them rather take the time to report them even if they were in violation of the guidelines.

LOLZ............mine was worse jwf!!! i started a discussion and had over 80 responses ... then suddenly..somebody dropped by and said that my discussion is BORING and didnt know that enswer to it...... HUH!?? so I replied back why he even bother to drop by a line??? he should have left the page.. but maybe he figured that dropping a line could earn him a few extra cents..lolz!!!!!!!!! ..the worse part is..i went to check his profile... he started a discussion 5 months ago and another discussion 4 months ago... one idscussion only had 1 response while the other one had 3 responses... so i figured who really had the boring discussion

sometimes it's done with the idea of supporting their friends even though they have nonething to say on the subject. like you i only bother reporting much more serious activity - offensive stuff and occasionally when someone is clogging up a section with dozens of non-discussions.

No, I've not done that. ....sorry couldn't resist. I've seen a lot of responses like that and always wondered why some one would even bother. Once, I've even noticed a similar response marked as a best response...out of many very good ones! THAT'S another discussion though. If myLot enacted a rule that plainly says that payments are based only on discussions & responses that are three sentences or longer, a lot of those one-line, pointless responses would become a thing of the past. We'd probably still see a few though, from members who feel obligated to respond to all of their friend's discussions, even if they have nothing to say. That said...How are you? Haven't seen you for a while. How are the kitties?

Fine thanks. Just come back from a holiday in Istanbul with my sister. Cats are all fine and I'm hoping to get another one quite soon, upping the population to five cats.

I would like to take this chance to say that Im Sorry...I have been quilty of the same thing. I wasn't looking at it in the earnings sense as much as I was supporting the discussion. If I have offended someone for doing this then I do apologize from the bottom of my heart. This is still a great discussion. You have a nice day and keep smiling...

That's nice of you rose, but to judge by your rating of 10, I'd say that you have not been guilty of very many irrelevant postings.

I would just ignore the off topic responses, or maybe put a question like "are you sure you know what you are talking about?" That way the member would know they were off topic. I think it is the best way to do it. There is no real reason to report them. In fact some people actually open up more then one page here and maybe they had the wrong reply for more then one discussion if they were trying to reply to 2 or 3 at once?

Well, I've never actually reported anyone for making an off topic post, but I think that some of them might be posted by trolls who are just trying to derail the conversation. The best thing to do with them is to ignore them. I have seen as well were someone has made a mistake and posted in the wrong discussion, but they do generally realise this and add another message saying that. I have no problem with that whatsoever.

Hi Jwfarrimond Yes I have seen that happen numerous times a lot of what Iv'e seen is people just putting out those one line sentences like ... "What does that mean",instead of elaborating a bit more by saying ... Hi (John or Jane Doe) I was reading your discussion topic and didn't quite undestand what you meant could you elaborate a little more please? Just a few more words would really make it seem as though you at least put a little thought into your comment or response. when I respond I usualy start off by saying hello to the person it makes it more personal in my opinion . Also I see a lot of topics that make absolutely no sense at all and some people out there have 10 -15 topic of discussin in a row, like this one person who is in the cooking section and has topics like , What to make for dinner, What to do with leftovers, Its dinnertime again what should I cook ? What do you do with leftover mashed potatoe What do you do with your leftovers? How Often Do YOu Eat leftovers? When they take one topic and milk it for all its worth you can't help but think they are in this just for the money because from what I can see they hardly respond to the comments..they have more topics of discussion then responses I wonder if they think they get paid when people respond to their topic because thats just not the case. And they go from various interests and start all these multiple topics over and over aagain . Theres nothing wrong with starting multiple topics but if thats all your doing there is no way you can respond to even half of comments to your topic unless you stay in MYLOT 24/7 LOL

I would just ignore them. I really could not be bothered, or would have no desire to report them. Just ignore.
