One Day This Week...

Lately I have only been getting 2 days a week of work, this week I only got 1 day (8 hours per day). And I found out it's because they are trying to give this other lady more hours...
I've worked with this woman, and I'm always hearing about her finicial problems. One day she told me she couldn't afford to go shopping and all she had at home was 1 box of cereal and some bread, or something...so I do feel sorry for her.
My situation isn't as dire as hers, but 8 hours this week!?!? I pay 200 bucks a month for car insurance and I need hours too. But then again, I think about how guilty I'd feel if I took hours away from this other lady. And another reason I don't want to make a big issue of this is because I'm trying to get a new job anyways.
I have been activly searching for another job in another state...I've applied to multiple positions at one place...but for some reason I'm having no luck with them :/ I have 2+ years of experience related to the positions I've applied for, so I don't know why I haven't been contacted yet....but the positions are still open so please cross your fingers for me!

Think positive. You will hear from someone about a new job. Might take time but should be well worth it.
I knew someone who was always complaining about her financial situation. She is a single lady and claimed she was unable to work. She did work away from the house, however, only to be paid cash. This way she could also collect her social security disability checks. I got so sick of hearing this and really wanted to tell her that if she got her duff and really worked she wouldn't have all these problems. By the way, she was able to physically work but somehow got around the system. Eventually I drifted off away from her friendship because my ears were tired..lol
My suggestion would be not to let your co-worker intimidate you as far as hours are concerned. Venting is one thing but to continuously badger you with sympathy about money, is terribly annoying. Maybe you need to remind her that your hours were cut therefore your pay was cut. Sometimes tossing it right back helps.
Have a good weekend,

I wouldn't exactly say I'm intimidated by my coworker. Depending on if I have a shot at getting this new job I have an interview for on wednesday, I will or will not leave a note for my boss asking her for my hours back. If I get a new job, I'm not going to make a big deal out of it...but if I don't then I'll defeniatly ask for them back.
Thanks carol!

This is a clear case of whinge and win. They are probably sick of the woman complaining and have given her the hours to shut her up.
She is laying a guilt trip on her employers and she does not care at all for her colleagues so how come she is reaping the benefits of the extra hours.
The thing is...people are at the level they want to be at. If they wanted a different or a better life they would make it happen....just like you are by going after another job. That woman will always be in debt...but you are a person who achieves things.
Good luck with the new job, it's only a matter of time for the right one to be available.

Well if, after this interview tomorrow, I know I'm not going to get the job I'll defeniatly ask my manager for my hours back--although I don't want to annoy her as much as my coworker. Lol. But I can't live off 8 hours a week! I'm defeniatly not getting paid enough for that!
Thank you MsTickle!!! Please keep your fingers crossed for me

I have ideal to look for another work like you too. Can you imagine the work I have to do right now? Sitting one seat, read and find mistakes in document, work alone. I'm very tired. I work 8 hours per day, everyday are the same. In the evening, I go to study English and Japanese. At the end of year, I have an exam to take a certificate of Japanese. At the weekend, I go to study at bank academy. I feel I'm too tired with this timetable

Oh wow! You certainly sound busy! But I couldn't do tedious work like that...the jobs i applied for are at a utah animal sanctuary, and I got an email yesterday from them--they want to phone interview me for one of the positions! So I'm crossing my fingers, I dont really like talking on the phone and I'm not sure how it'll go!

hi lily.
i like the way you think about the other lady. that's true, if you can have another one, then you can at least share some of your hours to others.
well, i will pray for you to get a position. i think you can have it in no time.
good luck.

While I'm sure they mean well, I don't think it's fair that they are doing what they are doing. August for my husband and i was an expensive month, and for the last week, all we had in the house were a few eggs and a loaf of bread, but we made it go till we got paid again.
I think it's nice they're trying to help her, but it should not be at your expense. Can you talk to human resources and see if what they are doing is legal?

Oh, I'm not looking to get anyone in trouble--both my manager and assistant manager are really nice people, and I think if I asked for my hours back they would oblige...but i just can't help but think about this other woman.
She's got bills, pets, she has a son living at home and 2 other children...I'd just feel bad taking hours away from her when she's always telling me how she needs them. :/

I hope you get your other job. I know alot of places are just not in any kind of hurry to hire people. I think they have openings but are delaying on filling them due to the economy.

Actually my current job has a few new staff members! Instead of giving their current employee's more hours (like they want) they hire new people. It's kind of a pain .
Thanks! I hope I get the job too! lol

I've been getting 2 days and in a good week 2 1/2 to 3 days lately, too. 1 to 2 days working for a company that sells herbs, dried flowers, dried Chinese Lanterns (type of orange lantern-like producing plant), jams and jellies, etc. She loves having me around. She can get more jams and jellies done right now when she needs to be doing them almost full time. So I'm weeding, cutting the Chinese Lanterns, filling pillows with Balsom, etc. So she has time to do her jams and jellies. She goes to Farmers' Markets the rest of the days of the week, so I can't get anymore than one or two days with her (depends on how much my back and hands can take to determine the one or two days). Plus one day of cleaning for another Lady who has medical problems that make it so she either has to clean or take care of herself (she only has so much energy).
As a Gatherer, I love the first job. As a person who hates cleaning, the $ and the knowing that I CAN do it and the other person would suffer if she did it, gets me through. I really like the second lady. It's not that I don't like the first one, it's that the first one must be all business to keep her business and she has to be able to tell me to do something and just have me do it so she can do her jams and jellies or else she can't keep her business. So one I do it because I love the job and the other I do it because I sincerely care about the person.
Good luck, maybe you should go to somewhere like a state employment office and have them take an objective look at your resume, cover letter, and anything else you're sending out. They might be able to give you tips.

Don't feel bad for her. Most people I know that gripe about not having enough for food at home, have things like cable TV and cell phones, they use the AC at home, buy coffee or sodas etc. Very few actually economize and cut everything non essential from the budget.

I understand what you're saying...but she never has food at work, and if she does it's a smasll bag of peanuts or trail mix. And she only brings water to work...never soda or coffee or anything else.

I think if you both can't get enough work and you are searching work is great. If you are trying one job and they haven't called you, may be there is any problem. But if you don't get this job, try any other which may be good than this one or anything. You can try to get another job for that lady also at another place fo better earning. Such things must be faced and ways must be found. Thank you.

I've applied to a few different places in different states...but there is one place I'd like to get a job at the most (that's the one that I applied for 4 different positions).
I've talked with the other lady at work and she is also considering applying to a couple different places.
